America attacked 2 Iranian oil tankers today, which is a pretty big turn of events. For months, it has only enforced the naval blockade and has avoided outright attacking Iran's energy related assets to prevent escalation. But the article above confirms that the potus has now approved a 'tanker for tanker' policy.

The conflict has led to an incredibly fast surge in oil prices ($90+) and interest rates (10Y at 4.8%), but even with today's drop, the market is not far from all time highs. The S&P is roughly only 2% away.

Is there a reason the market is so complacent? For context, when America and Iran first went to war in March, markets dropped over 10%. So with the renewal of the war and both oil and treasury yields surging to new highs, why is the market so apathetic this time around?

The average bond yields since January 2025 have been around 4.2%, while the federal budget deficit was slightly less than 5.2%. Given that the debt held by the public amounts to roughly 100%, the government needs 9.4% of nominal GDP growth to outpace the growth of the debt while in reality it was only 5.9%.

Over a significant period of time, the required nominal GDP growth rate hasn’t been seen since the 1970s. Since then, we've seen the Reagan and Bush tax cuts that promised exactly that and failed. Over the 8 years that Trump’s tax cuts were in effect, they failed to accelerate GDP growth either.

The only realistic way to stop the debt from spiraling out of control is to reduce the budget deficit and lower inflation by cancelling tariffs and solving the problem with the Strait of Hormuz, which keeps oil prices elevated. But the Trump administration is doing just about the opposite of all that.

That dip got bought up immediately once the blowout earnings report and raised revenue guidance dropped. We could say that, undoubtedly, strong AI demand is clearly still driving this momentum.

We know Trump for his talent in managing his stock portfolio, even if he claims to delegate. He's been long on a very large number of stocks. Trump knows that interest rates could rise, that things will get turbulent with the midterm elections, and he anticipates a possible sharp market crash. This is bad for his image, so someone has to be blamed. The Democrats! They're preventing Americans from benefiting from AI by blocking the construction of data centers. It's their fault that everything is grinding to a halt. To keep making a profit, Trump may have asked for a switch to puts and shorts, a perfect 180-degree turn to profit from the decline.
