Always take the time to clean your spatter, especially before showing a teacher, a weld supervisor, or the whole internet.

Don’t listen to these dingleberrys kid, I started in high school aswell finished in 2015 never looked back.

What I can tell you is prep.. by ur own flap disk if the school won’t provide them an anywhere you are welding take all the rust an mill scale off, makes a hell of difference in running the bead an also a lot less to clean up.

A lot of people don’t get it but heat pulls the rust in, if you think even for a second it’s gonna be within the heat effected zone clean it.

Work on getting consistent with ur travel speed and learn to focus your weld puddle by weaving, they will teach you stringers however they are not practical, weave my boy weave.. forward alil bit pause, forward, pause, forward, pause…

The reason you want to get into this habit, jobs are very inconsistent, sometimes you are comfortable, sometimes you are not, sometimes the there are variables you can’t control, but it’s a lot easier to control a forward an pause an recreate this everywhere regardless of the circumstances while a stringer you will struggle.

Hope this helps kid, keep that head down and keep burning baby!

Um, I don’t mean to ruffle any feathers Majestic Mouse so please don’t take this personal. I’ve been welding for almost 30 years, and in my experience a stringer bead is always a better weld. There are many guys that are good enough to use the weave, but for a beginner it’s a bad practice. Granted there are many different types of materials that do use a weave technique such as 6010. MiG weaves lessen penetration, spread out the heat affected zone, and sometimes get lack of fusion.

I think it’s about being able to recreate said training in a live situation regardless of circumstances, I think it’s a lot easier to stay consistent with a step weave then running stringers.

I get what ur saying about the heat effected zone, but in terms of penetration on mig welding it would increase it..

Lot easier in a tight space to keep it consistent this way an that’s my opinion

People sling metal in all kinds of ways, if you can make it look nice and it holds that all that matters. Enjoy your next puddle, brother!
