I put 2 Wilton cake pans into the dishwasher. One got destroyed.

Wife will not be happy with me when she wakes up and sees what happened to her cherished baking pans.

Th dishwasher detergent reacts poorly with aluminum pans and utensils. I had to learn that the hard way too. 

The good ne s is that you can use a metal scrub pad and scrub the corrosion off and return it to its former beauty. Just takes time and effort!

Note for the future OP: if something doesn’t specifically say dishwasher safe and you have no way of looking it up, it’s best to assume it’s not dishwasher safe. There’s a lot of kitchen cookware and bakeware that’s not.

Agreed! I make sure everything is dishwasher safe before I buy it. If it’s not, I’m not interested unless it’s a specialized item I need.

If it’s glass it’s going in, steel is typically safe as is ceramic

I don't even HAVE a dishwasher and I've messed up dishes before. I accidentally left a tea mug with glow in the dark paint soaking in the dish water for a few hours and ruined it. I was sad, but had only myself to blame.

There is likely going to be some changes in how much it sticks to food. The caustic in dishwasher soap reacts with the aluminum and causes etching - which is why most aluminum that goes through dishwasher cycles have a whitish, matte appearance.

It’s an aluminum cake pan. It sticks to food already. You have to grease it. As a person who has done this to a cake pan by accident it’s 1:1 identical to the behavior before.

You can (somewhat easily) fix the corrosion but getting it back to the right shape is going to be next to impossible. You're going to have to get her a new one sadly

I buy 0000 steel wool at the hardware store - much finer for less scratching. When scrubbing w steel wool, follow the "grain" of the pan - concentric circles - to avoid making new swirl marks.

One probably got the brunt of the detergent/hot water spray. Maybe one was on the upper rack and one on the lower.

Both on upper rack, one was right under the nozzle.

My logic was “it gets hotter in the oven than in a dishwasher”. That was bad logic.

The logic is fine, its not the heat that did this. There is something in dishwasher detergent that eats aluminium on a microscopic scale. As of now they are probably still fine. If you keep using the dishwasher on them they will eventually have tiny holes develop, which will keep getting bigger as more and more metal is eroded.

Oh no! I don’t put anything aluminum or precious in the dishwasher for this exact reason. I damaged a bundt pan I bought at a Goodwill that I had for years by listening to my sister that it was safe. I silently cried myself to sleep that night as she tried to console me, but there was no consoling to be had! 😭😭😭😭😭
