The one class action about preservatives is kinda meh imo. It just depends on your exact definition of what a preservative is. Personally I'm not at all bothered or feel mislead by their labelling.
But yeah the other class action about salmonella in the chicken, not a good look. Relatively speaking they are still among the most trustworthy imo. Every grocery store has had similar issues and I gotta buy food somewhere

Target obeyed his commands, lost a lot of business and still hasn’t recovered.

That’s easy to say, but it’s ignoring the fact that he terrorized multiple universities at the start of his administration, pulled grant funding for projects he didn’t like which effectively ended entire departments and careers, and has sued multiple journalism outlets and won (via settlement or in court.) It’s not unreasonable that many organizations have had to take calculated moves to essentially fly under the radar and try to wajt out the four years.

Right. I work in an academia-adjacent organization. While I’d love to see us stand up loudly to bullies, we’re not bigger than the federal government’s resources, we don’t have endless cash to burn on lawsuits, we’re publicly traded so our board would rake any leader over the coals, and ultimately our 150+ year old company needs to not yeet itself into the fire along with all of the people it serves and the employees who work here. It’s very easy for armchair experts to claim they would behave differently, but it’s not like a rogue CEO could do much damage unless they had the full backing of a board that is largely funded by an individual.

Listen, I love Costco, it's the primary place where I shop, and I use their home and auto insurance as well.
They did increase prices. Probably not as much as the could have, it seems like they made a point not to price gouge customers as their primary revenue stream is from memberships, but prices definitely went up, especially on imported goods. Olive oil, coffee, cheese, rice, and chocolate all had significant price increases, and a lot of other products had minor price hikes. Although it's still cheaper to shop at Costco than anywhere else.

Did you also notice that when the prices on those items went back down, Costco lowered their prices? The olive oil was up to like $25 at one point and now it’s back down to around $15 again. Eggs and butter are lower too. Other stores don’t really do that, they always keep the price higher than it was.

Yeah - I’m from western NY and we used to have Wegmans, which was a similar business. When Bob Wegman died, his son Danny pretty much kept the spirit alive, but when Danny’s kids took over, everything went to shit.

I still didn’t care for Bob. He would walk around any store and ask employees if they LOVED working there and if they answered anything but YES I LOVE IT HERE AND YOU TOO!!! He’d fire them.
I worked there (never got asked, fortunately) and I hated it. Retail just isn’t for me, especially being hard of hearing! I tried, but it just wasn’t worth it. I think I quit after about a year.

I’ve got an uncle who was a Costco exec during the Jim Sinegal era. My uncle is a smart, kind man who really respected Sinegal, and the culture he built. He saw some things change after Sinegal’s retirement, and was concerned that as more of the exec team turned over, the company would change significantly.
But, their behavior during the Trump 2.0 era has convinced me that at least for now, the culture that Sinegal built is still intact. I hope it stays that way.

We got a membership because when we got there, parked, and started walking across the lot, an employee hurried over to let us know they had already closed. It was a little after 6 on a Sunday, and the lot was still full, so we had no idea.
He saved us from walking all the way to the entrance just to turn around. That pretty much sealed the deal for us. If the employees care enough to do something that simple, we felt pretty good about getting a membership.

They arent necessarily for their employees, they're just apartments that anyone can rent. Costco's are giant, flat-topped buildings. Much like all other box stores. They are just putting other things on top of the building.
Human's are AWFUL at space utilization. We have tens of thousands of box stores all over this country that are surrounded by parking lots. Why dont we make the walmarts 2 stories, and put the parking lot under the store? Why do we have giant strips of box stores that are all roughly the same shape? Why don't we stack them on top of each other?

I don't know if there's anything official, but all the beef we sell is USDA inspected and graded. All our cattle are slaughtered and processed in the US. We can't say the cattle is 100% raised in the US, though. As far as I know, that would be next to impossible to track unless we raised them from calves ourselves.

I love Costco. I am not even necessarily the demographic, I don’t have children or a big family but I find things to get their that are really great value propositions. A little inconvenient but I saved over $100 on a car battery there. That already covers the membership cost. Toilet tissue, protein powder, and creatine for the year and I’m saving several hundred there a year without even going more than once a month or less on average.

china buys cheaper beef from argentina instead
america's farmers are failing, with many of them going completely out of business. they need ANOTHER bailout to rescue them from trump's bad policy. again. just like trump's 1st term.
this was foreseen and preventable. there's a strong case to be made that the republican party is actively working against america's interests. making us weaker us but marketing it as "patriotic".

I didnt want to eat them because I think Lunchables are kinda gross, but he insisted, and I swear it was the best Lunchable I ever had in my life. Also Rao's marinara tastes slightly different and better when I get it from Costco vs. a regular grocery store. I don't know why.
I get the feeling the people who own Costco actually consume the goods from there and want them to be good.

Costco has a lot of power over their suppliers. Suppliers have been known to change the formulation for their products if Costco isn't happy with the quality of the product.

Wherever you choose to buy meat, look for a label saying "Product of the USA". That means, by law, that the cattle were born, raised, and processed inside the United States.
They aren't importing steaks or roasts from Argentina, so you could buy those at your supermarket or whatever, and grind them yourself or have the butcher do it.
You're still better off buying beef from a local butcher shop that buys only locally raised beef.

Where I live, I can get a hotdog, soda and slice of pizza for under $4. Health considerations aside, it'll fill you up and it's yummy.

There are certainly things at Costco that are purposefully kept as loss leaders to get people to come in... Rotisserie chickens, pizzas and hot dogs come to mind.

Today I saw 2 different meat products, 1 specifically said USA & the other had a US state I forget-as the origin-on the price & description sheet. Don't remember if they put this on before? But was happy to see that!

I wouldn't put much stock into the Callaway move. It's very likely that a new line of clubs are being shipped out so the 2024 line was pulled from shelves. Maybe they'll take a stand and pull them but I'd give it a few weeks before praising the move.
