New Here? Start Here. Everything You Need to Know About Working in the Netherlands

hey, welcome to r/WorkInTheNetherlands.

i made this sub because i kept seeing employment questions get buried in the bigger expat and country subs. stuff like "what does proeftijd mean in my contract" or "my employer won't apply for the 30% ruling, is that normal" - questions that deserve actual answers from people who've dealt with it.

so this is a place for anything related to working here:

  • employment contracts, CAOs, notice periods
  • the 30% ruling (and all the weirdness around it)
  • payroll, taxes, payslip deductions
  • work permits and visas
  • dutch workplace culture
  • freelancing / ZZP / the DBA mess
  • BSN, DigiD, health insurance, all the admin stuff

there are post flairs for the main topics. if one is missing let me know.

ground rules: be kind, share what you actually know from experience, and if you're guessing on legal or tax stuff please say so. nobody here is a lawyer (or if you are, cool, but still not legal advice).

the sub is brand new so it'll take a bit to build up. feel free to ask questions, share your own experiences, or just lurk until something catches your eye.

Am I financially shooting myself in the foot? TR→NL intra-company transfer, €80K gross, partner with no income yet

TL;DR: My employer is transferring me from Turkiye to their Netherlands entity. On paper, I'll earn "less", and my monthly savings would roughly halve. I'm trying to figure out if the long-term upside (EUR income, EU residence, stability, career market access) justifies it, or if I'm financially shooting myself in the foot.

About me:

  • Senior Game/Robotics Engineer /Team lead, ~7 years of experience
  • Moving with my partner; she won't have income initially
  • City: Rotterdam

The NL offer:

  • €6,220 gross/month 8% holiday allowance included → ~€80.6K/year gross ~€5,530 net/month
  • No pension contribution from the employer
  • Relocation support: Plane tickets, first rent and 2 deposits(paid back later when you leave rent)

My current situation in Turkiye (the part that makes this hard):

Net(bank) 300000
Food ~11550
Transport 25000
Health insurance ~1,407 (Covered by company)
Phone Bills Covered by company
Total spendable ~336,550 ~6000 EUR
  • The catch: my salary is in TRY. Every year inflation + currency depreciation eats into it, and long-term planning in Turkiye is basically impossible.

Monthly Expenses

Turkiye

Item TRY/month
Rent 30000
Food 20000
Building maintenance 4800
Utilities 2000
Transport 1000
Total 57800 ~ 1032 EUR

Netherlands (estimated)

Item EUR/month
Rent (2 bedroom apt, Rotterdam) 2,000
Food/groceries 750
Health insurance 150 x 2 = 300
Phone plan 30 x 2 = 60
Internet 45
Gas + electricity 120
Water 15
Garbage tax 20
Municipal tax 85
Sewage tax 25
Total 3420

* I'll cover my wife's expenses here in NL, but she'd continue working if we were in Turkiye. She'll resign before we move.

Monthly Savings Potential

USD EUR
Turkiye 5.817 4976
Netherlands 2.466 2110
Difference 3.351 2866

Please note these 'spendings' are the bare minimum for me. Of course we'd go out and have fun, and spend more, but we can see and compare constants this way.

A few very important points to make:

-No bank will give you a 30-year mortgage here, let alone one without a down payment. Neither exists in Türkiye — there are no 30-year loans, and "no down payment" isn't a thing.

- Cars are taxed at 300–400% here. And again, you can't get a loan that covers the full price of a car. A 2025 Mustang Dark Horse (mmmmhh) costs over 20 million lira, which is ~€357K — while I can see the same model on AutoScout for €50–75K. And only like 10 of those in Turkiye, so good luck on the second-hand market and with the service.

My questions for people who've done a similar move:

  1. Is €80.6K gross reasonable for a senior engineer / team lead with 7 YoE in NL, or am I clearly underpaid?
  2. Is €5,530 net livable-plus-savings for two people in Rotterdam with €2K rent, or does reality (taxes I'm not seeing, insurance, unexpected costs) eat more than I think?
  3. No employer pension — how big a deal is this in NL long-term? Is it a red flag or common for smaller companies?

Dependent visa holder (partner has HSM permit) — can I do freelance/contractor work for a company abroad?

**Context:** My partner has a Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) permit and I'm here on a dependent residence permit. I've been offered part-time remote work as an independent contractor for a company based outside the Netherlands, paid in a foreign currency.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

  1. Does my dependent permit actually allow this kind of work? I know it depends on the annotation on the back of the residence card ("arbeid vrij toegestaan" vs. requiring a TWV) — just want to confirm I'm reading that correctly.
  2. Since the client is a foreign company, does that change anything about my eligibility to do the work, or does it just affect how I invoice/get taxed?
  3. Do I need to register with KVK as a freelancer/contracter? If yes, do I need to register before I start, or can that happen after I've agreed to the work?
  4. What to do in case I register for KVK as a freelancer and choose not to work as a freelancer?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in a similar spouse/dependent-permit + freelance situation. Trying to get this right before I commit to anything.

The (government) austerity measures are going great!
Persistent excess mortality attributed to the catch-all excuse: "influenza." How fitting. And yet, they still can't balance the f***ing State budget. 😂

Incidentally, the bureaucratic elite did *everything* in their power to sweep this study under the rug. Because, you know, "we don't want to cause unrest."

>>>> The Netherlands will go down in history as the only country (along with a few other distant "Western"—ahem, *rich* 😂—nations) that sees its life expectancy *drop* as it... "gets richer." <<<<
🤔 (Hint: legalized euthanasia/premature termination of life—not really a thing in Eastern Europe yet). They haven't realized yet that the highest healthcare costs (for the government budget) occur during the final year of a person's life.

Moving to the Netherlands to work cybersec as EU citizen

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for honest advice from people who are working in Netherlands or have moved there for IT/cybersecurity roles.

A bit about me:

  • From EU, I’m authorized to work in the Netherlands and do not require visa sponsorship
  • Master’s degree in compute science
  • ~1 year of experience in Cybersecurity + 1 year as junior developer
  • Currently working in a Big 4 company (not possible for internal transfer)
  • Experience in SOC
  • Familiar with most SIEMs
  • BTL1, Sec+ and SC-200
  • Strong interest in Blue team and Security Engineering

I wanted to ask:

  • How realistic is it to find a job in the Netherlands in cybersec with my experience and around B1 in dutch
  • What are the most effective ways to find these jobs (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.)?
  • Since I have family in the Netherlands is it bad to say in my cv/application that i live there? I say this since i can move instantly to there and stay there till i find housing for myself

I’d really appreciate insights from anyone who has gone through this process.

Thanks in advance

Looking for new opportunity

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for a new opportunity in the Netherlands and would appreciate any leads or referrals.

I have 11+ years of experience across Business Analysis, Intelligent Automation, RPA, process improvement, and digital transformation, with hands-on experience in areas such as:

• UiPath and Power Automate

• Business/process analysis

• Requirements gathering and stakeholder management

• Process improvement and automation delivery

• Power BI and reporting

• API/database integrations

• Process Mining and Document Understanding

I’m mainly exploring roles such as Business Analyst, Process Analyst, Intelligent Automation/RPA Specialist, Automation Consultant, Digital Transformation Specialist, Product Owner, or Power BI/Reporting roles.

I’m authorized to work in the Netherlands and do not require visa sponsorship. I’m open to permanent, contract, hybrid, and suitable EU-remote opportunities.

If your team is hiring or you know of a relevant opportunity, I’d really appreciate a DM.

I have been looking since March 2026, and it's been months.

Thank you!

12+ YoE Senior Dev looking to relocate from India to Europe (DE / NL / PL / SE) without the study route – realistic state of the market in 2026?

Hey everyone,

I'm a Senior Software Engineer based in India with 12+ years of experience, and I'm actively exploring moving/settling in Europe—primarily considering Germany, Netherlands, Poland, or Sweden.

Quick Background:

Experience: 12+ years across early-stage startups and large MNCs (Google India, Mastercard India, Walmart USA ).

Tech Stack: Core fullstack engineering, solid hands-on experience in DevOps & CI/CD automation, and over the last 1.5–2 years heavily focused on LLM integrations, AI agents, and RAG pipelines.

Target Route: Direct direct-hire / work visa sponsorship (not looking to go through the Master's/study route).

What I’m trying to understand:

Given the ongoing tech market corrections, tighter visa requirements, and restructuring across EU tech hubs:

Direct Sponsorship Reality: How open are mid-to-large tier tech companies or scale-ups in Germany / NL / Poland / Sweden to sponsoring non-EU senior/staff engineers right now?

Target Country Comparison: Between Germany, the Netherlands (considering the 30% ruling changes), Poland (B2B/growth market), and Sweden—which ecosystem currently offers the best balance of open hiring, English-friendly workplaces, and reasonable visa timelines?

Actionable Channels: Beyond standard LinkedIn cold applies, what worked best for you?

If anyone has successfully navigated relocating from non-EU to Europe recently (2025–2026) through direct employment, I’d love to hear your insights, realistic expectations, and any pitfalls to avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Moved to NL 2 months ago, residence permit for 5 months, still no job - feeling stuck and out of ideas

Hi everyone,

I moved to the Netherlands about two months ago to join my Dutch partner, and I’ve had my residence permit for five months. I have full work authorization — no sponsorship needed. Despite that, I’ve been job hunting nonstop and I’m honestly running out of steam.

A bit about my background: I’m originally from Belarus and hold a medical degree (pediatric anesthesiology/intensive care, including ECMO experience). Unfortunately, due to the political situation, I can’t practice medicine here or get my diploma recognized. Outside of medicine, I’ve worked in clinical operations, healthcare IT, HR for a remote team, and international event coordination.

Languages: fluent Russian and English, currently learning Dutch (A2 level).

I’ve applied to dozens of roles — operations, manufacturing, customer support, even bridge jobs like retail/warehouse work — with very few responses. I’m starting to feel like I’m doing something wrong, or maybe just underestimating how hard the Dutch job market is for someone in my position.

Has anyone been through something similar? What actually helped you land your first job here — was it a specific job board, a recruiter, volunteering, a course, networking events? Any advice, even small things, would mean a lot right now. Thanks for reading.

12 years GRC/Cybersecurity experience, CISSP, EU citizen — still can’t crack the Dutch market. Sharing my experience.

I want to share this in case it helps other EU nationals calibrate expectations before job-hunting in NL infosec/GRC.

Background: 12 years in cybersecurity, GRC, and IT risk management. CISSP certified. M.Sc. in IT Security. Currently a Security Architect at a large financial infrastructure company in Germany, with hands-on experience across DORA, NIS2, GDPR, EU AI Act, ISO 27001, PAM rollouts, third-party risk, and vulnerability management. Full EU work rights — no visa or work permit needed. Intermediate German, actively learning Dutch (A1 and climbing).

What I’ve experienced over the past several months:

**•** Applied to 20+ roles across national champions, tech, industrial, and financial firms in the Eindhoven/Amsterdam corridor
**•** Made it to final or in-person rounds a few times — one went as far as an on-site interview with the team and a facility tour, only to be rejected afterward citing “stakeholder management” as the gap despite strong marks on technical/framework knowledge
**•** Several rejections came with zero explanation
**•** A recurring theme: Dutch-headquartered companies seem to strongly prefer local or Dutch-fluent candidates even for roles advertised as English-first
**•** International/English-first companies have been comparatively more open, but competition is fierce

Takeaways for anyone in a similar position:

**•** EU citizenship removes the legal barrier, but not the cultural/language one — many roles are de facto local-candidate-preference even when not stated
**•** Certifications and years of experience help you get interviews, not necessarily offers
**•** “Stakeholder management” and “cultural fit” feedback can be vague enough to mean almost anything — don’t over-index on it
**•** Dutch language, even at a basic level, seems to meaningfully move the needle

Curious if others with similar EU/CISSP/GRC backgrounds have had better (or worse) luck, and what finally worked for you.

Should I withdraw from my offer!?

I am supposed to join by mid-September and I was offered the role 2 weeks ago. I still do not have clarity on the visa process and 30 % ruling. I have spoken with everyone on the team and hiring side and no one has responded to me via email with who owns what.

It is all verbal on the calls but no response via e-mail. There are errors in the contract too especially related to my ID numbers and name.

Should I withdraw from the offer stating absence of clarity and fit as I have already sent enough mails and I am done speaking on the call.

More Details:

Current Permit: Zoekjaar (hence, unrestricted)
Validity: Expires in 3 months
Housing sorted: Yes, temporarily in Randstad for the next 4 months.

Zoekjaar visa prospects as a Pakistani applicant

So for the context - I completed my MS in Business Analytics from the UK last year and then moved back to my home country i.e. Pakistan. I’m eligible to apply for the Zoekjaar as my University is in the top 200 rankings by subject. What I want to know is if this will be a sensible move considering all factors including relocating, finding accommodation, finding part-time and ultimately switching to full time? What are the prospects? Thanks in advance.

Industry state in Benelux

Hi everyone,

After graduating with a degree in civil engineering, specialising in applied mathematics, I'm currently undertaking a 1-year training programme in artificial intelligence. I'm considerings specializing in neural computing and BCIs. Before committing, I'd like to learn a little bit more about the state of this field in Belgium or neighbouring countries.

  1. How's the sector doing currently? Are there job opportunities here, or is it a field primarily dominated by the US?
  2. Some say BCIs represent the future and will develop considerably in the next ten years; others believe there is still a long way to go. What are your thoughts?
  3. What is the salary level? I know it varies depending on the position, but what are the approximate averages?
  4. Is a PhD often necessary to acquire solid skills and knowledge in this field?

Thanks :)

Moving from uk to Netherlands

My whole life has fallen apart and I need a fresh start. I want to move from the uk to the Netherlands and start my career in graphic design.

I have a Graphic Design degree from 2025, a portfolio, and a few months of intern experience.

How likely is it I’d be able to get a job and meet the required income to move to Rotterdam/ Amsterdam vicinity?

Is this idea even worth perusing? Or is it impossible?
