Illness / injury / recovery Finally got got š„
I went the entirety of last year and all of this spring/summer running without too much injury other than PF at the beginning and I went down on this afternoons long run. I forgot to tuck, so I stopped the fall with my hands (stupid) and my palms are pretty raw, but no actual bleeding. Ankle is a little sore but I guess I should count my blessings.
Mostly mad that not only will this effect upcoming training but also just every day things like bringing laundry down and doing chores (I live alone). Pls send positive vibes my way if you can š„

Iāve never been able to tuck! My knees are a lovely patchwork of scar tissue. Iām so sorry this happened to you. Ice and rest! Heal up quickly. ā¤ļøāš©¹

As someone who has tripped not once, but twice, and in roughly the same god damn spot (within 10 feet of each other roughly), I understand the frustration and pain. I highly recommend looking for bandages appropriate to the injury level - for me I got the Pro Heal bandages that are the hydrocolloid type - wear for multiple days, and contain the fluid coming out of your injuries. Did help with the reducing scaring and accelerating heal time.
Take your time, rest, and heal up. While it is frustrating to know the impact on training, there are other events/races out there to look forward to also :)

As someone who trips and falls with an unnecessary frequency I second your hydrocolloid bandage recommendation. I canāt recommend them enough actually

I have cerebral palsy (very mild appearing but itās still very there on my the MRI and lil quirks). I started running in 2012 and I think I fell on run number like 3 or 4. š
Iād eat shit every now and then but it wasnāt until I was falling like every other run in 2018 that I started doing gait training with a running specific pt that things even vaguely improved. We tapped out at about 2024 though and the clinical director even was like, ālook, your gait looks fine, you are doing the best you can. You can do some medical treatment and go to neuro pt or just learn to be happy with your giant scar tissue.ā
Iāve been going to neuro pt for a year now and have fallen four times. Each time has been so much more manageable because theyāve worked with my brain and muscles to move differently. Before my brain didnāt have an understanding that I was falling or time to correct and now everything g is moving.
In 2025, I ran Boston as a para athlete and ate it at mile 4 and it was unhinged because I was mid Botox cycle and hurt. This year I ran and tripped at 14 and sprained my finger a bit but my knees were untouched.
I havenāt fallen since April now. Itās been a journey.
Attached- photo of the usual fall.

I have horrible balance and I saw a neuro 4 years ago when I started falling more than usual on trail runs and they didnāt find anything in my work up (got an MRI, EEG and had bloodwork) but I know I have something wrong and it feels neurological to me. Do you know if you need some kind of referral to see a neuro PT? Iāve been working with a regular PT since an ankle injury in 2021 but sheās only able to do so much. Iām just tired of my falls holding me back!

It would be a pt referral. Mine was obviously cut and dry though since I was as born with cerebral palsy and didnāt have to prove a diagnosis. I was like āwatch me walk.ā And they were like āoh yeah.ā

Gotcha. I really hate the U.S. healthcare system, ugh! Guess I gotta keep jumping through more hoops to hopefully get a diagnosis at some point so I can actually figure out a treatment plan. Appreciate the insight though!

ā¤ļøā𩹠Sending good vibes your way!
I have even started trail running myself and tripped on a flat patch of asphalt and TORE my knee up⦠(Aug 8) I went two weeks of keeping it bandaged and didnāt do anything intensive and it looks beautiful now. Donāt let the old āair it outā myth getcha. Keep it clean. Keep it moist. Keep it bandaged.
Mine was so deep it was soaking through regular bandaids within a few hours. Not blood, it clotted, just weeping. It was deep without needing professional medical care. It was brutal.
I did a big hiking trip last weekend. Yesterday, I did just under ten miles and it felt great. You got this. You are right around the corner. ššš

Did you keep running? How long did you give yourself to rest?Ā
2
u/superhulasloth 1d ago
I didnāt because it kept weeping badly enough for the first week (weeping through non stick bandage and gauze) that I didnāt want to push the healing tissue. It was a gouge since it was rough asphalt.
I walked my dog everyday to stay mobile. I would have gone for a long run after a couple weeks, but had a camping trip. August was kind of a wash because of that, but my knee looks fantastic, because I babied it. I feel really confident in how good my knee looks and feels now.

Thanks. I fell in a trail yesterday (first big fall) and tore up my palm and elbows. Trying to figure out how long to give it to run again.Ā

Hate to say it, ChatGPT was really helpful in me understanding how to properly care for the wound. That said, I listened to my body and thatās what ultimately determined my timeline. I was probably more cautious than anything since it was my first ābig fallā as a runner too.

Always look down unless it's primo smooth ground.
Never carry anything in my hands.
If a trail gets very rooty or rocky, that's when I walk, pace -- moving or elapsed -- be damned.

I went for a trail run yesterday and tripped on a big boulder and fell on another boulder - scraped up my elbow pretty bad (now matches my other elbow I got in a bike fall a few weeks ago) as well as my knee and hand and a bruised ankle. First time in a long time that Iāve fully fallen like that but it happens!

Same, girl. I also forgot to tuck and landed mostly on my chest. What was up with yesterday?

I wiped tf out during a half (local, so it was fine, I got back to my car no problem). Sprained my ankle but I was more pissed about my skinned knee and palms and all the dirt inside them! I also live alone, it sucks. On the bright side, I did get to confuse the EMTs by asking for an ace bandage for my ankle (I was also the impetus for the race director building first aid kits, including ace bandages, for all the water stations at future races lmao). Healing thoughts!

Also fell yesterday during my 10th 5k this year but my first trail run. Scraped up my palm and elbows and my ribs are sore from falling on my chest. So annoyed and embarrassed with myself. Ā

I mostly trail run, with my dog, and I go down hard a few times a season and look like Iāve been mauled by a bear.Ā

Ugh I always skin my knees!!! Have you ever used Tegaderm? Itās a lifesaver! It made it so I could just keep on running and also not wince in the shower or have bedding stuck to my boo boos!
