Testing Wiegand or OSDP?

Do you use any tool today to test your wiegand or OSDP wiring? I.e confirm that a card reader outputs correctly, or simulate a card swipe to a controller. Or you just wire the readers to the panels and figure it out from there ?

I had my boss grab me the "Cypress OTT-2100 Handheld OSDP Test COMSET Configuration Tool for Device ID and Baud Rate" from ADI. I've hooked it up on my test bench but haven't tested it in the real world yet. My intended use case is if there's existing Wiegand wiring the customer wants to use- I'll throw this guy on the line and can confirm if it'll work with OSDP or not.

If its 22 gauge or better and works for weigand and ain't over distance to power the lock from the panel room it'll work for 485 as 485 is bi directional and includes error checking. Verkada and some Tyco lines materials are the only updated documentation I've seen call out any issues if not usingit. If it isn't the control system (personally confirmed on verkada, avigilon, brivo, coram, AAC, Kantech, Lenel and RS2) will inform you there's a communication error with a few even giving you a health score like dropped packets which in my 10 years or so of experience always comes down to a skinned jacket. Unless you're running biometrics, there really is no need to move from the industry standard composite cable especially at the cost difference for shielded rs485 unless your environment really dictates it and at that point the hospital MRI room or magnet factory could justify the 4.5x cost for the reader wire alone like beldens 9842 vs say windy city banana cable.

I use a card programmed into the panel. As long as the wiring, reader programming, and panel programming are good, works no problem.

OSDP Bench for Windows just released an update that has a OSDP line quality tester. I'm hoping to release it on Android in a few weeks.

I think the question was more what do you guys use in the field when installing. Most techs ain't that techy, engineers definitely are. Yes wire up the card reader and test a badge is the most expediant and common method. Rs485 wired readersis actually more resilient. There's no need to break out engineer level troubleshooting tools for a solid 40 year old technology on a 40 reader install when you haven't even determined if there's a problem, especially when jobs are bid by the hour.

I run OSDPTestConsole on my laptop with an RS485 adapter, works great to test devices and can be used to set address and baud rate if you don’t have the Cypress tool or an easy way to do it via reader manager or something like that.

I use a Fluke Networks CableIQ Residential Qualifier Kit.

It has a bare wire accessory.

If your just testing wire a good ole multimeter. Every panel should have a spec of what their reader port should put out. And it should match the test port on the panel. Anything beyond that you'll need a special tool like mentioned above.
