not enough votes to reach a threshold.

for more information about what this means, see this page.

Eh. I find it's more of a matter of is the juice worth the squeeze. Meaning is the amount of effort we have to out in to get good at this worth the time to learn. Or is better to cut your losses early and move on? Or is it even interesting enough to learn how to get good at it.

This but the formula changes over time, early on in the hobby you get better really fast and then you get to a point where the improvement is much slower and that’s when I personally end up tapping out

yep, so now in this situation my hobby transformed into, how to get better at this. so the hobby itself is not THE hobby anymore, its the challenge and training for the hobby, which became THE hobby...:)

u/PsyOpBunnyHop excuse me those are my emotional support tabs. 1d ago

Soooo many things I have learned how to do that I immediately stopped doing it once I mastered it because it was no longer an interesting challenge.

Me and jobs...

2

u/Pretend_Purchase_893 1d ago

Bruh. I am on my 4th career right now. Not jobs but career. In terms of jobs... In my 40 years it's like in the 60s. Over 60 jobs in my life. All in very different fields.

Was a chef for 20ish years. Also did a a fuck load of other jobs too as I traveled. Then became a plumber. Then got bored of that and moved to sprinkler fitting. Got my tickets in all three trades. Now I am a water taxi boat skipper working on my masters limited so I can drive up to 60 ton vessels.

So yah. I completely feel you

yeah I think you just explained the entire thing, and that all happens in about 0.01 seconds

Sometimes I don't do things because I know that I'll get into it and do only it, when I've got things I actually need to do. I know I won't do those things I need to do, and I don't, but if I did that enjoyable thing it's guaranteed I won't and so I'm not allowed to enjoy life until later.

Nailed it. Learning to build and fly an FPV drone was not the easiest. Which was frustrating but god damn was it cool when i got it.

u/grunkage So, I smoked 2 packs a day for my mental health? Oh ok 1d ago

I mean, I can pretty much rationalize anything into being worthless to me. I suppose that's my super power

Nah, you just need to find "shadow." As Jung called it, or "soul" as philosophers named it.

1

u/Cultural-Part355 1d ago

Or are you even interested in learning? see. The truth, and then... Shadow.

Maybe you just want to dance? Which is beautiful.

And once the novelty of being good at a new thing wears off 🫠 as another commenter said, once progress slows I lose focus/interest

I think I did this with weight loss when I first started my medication in 2020, I noticed I was actually losing weight I kept track of the weight loss weekly, every week it was 10 pounds (this could have been mostly water weight + 1-2 actual pounds lost)

The moment I weighed myself and didn't see being 10 pounds less I got mad, the next week after weighed stayed the same I threw a fit like a baby and didn't care anymore and slowly gained all the weight back. I kick myself nearly everyday wishing I handled my emotions and worked on maintaining my weight

I'm lil mad now,vdang it lol 🫠

I did the same thing, now I'm trying to lose 50lbs all over again...

I was so stoked to see this clip in a non comedy related sub! Such a good show.

is ok, I ended up staying up all night trying to kill a relatively easy boss in Runescape 3. I fuckin' got it. I got my stupid fucking skull extra bounce cape. I suck, but at least I did the thing.

u/Keepmy_nutdown 1d ago

Good ole runescape. My friend group introduced it to me in middle. A year later they all stopped playing and I played it all the way till 12th grade.

u/arondaniel 1d ago

Yes, but only after buying all the hobby things.

you forgot master of none in the quote ;)
because it is better to be a jack of all trades, than someone else who is a master of none and also no jack of all trades ;)

u/SepticRedK 1d ago

This quote is the reason why I am convinced that some people are robots because "what do you mean you know how to play this many instruments and sing amazing?"

I need to have a somewhat adversarial relationship with something to put in the time to get good at it. It's gotta bite back so I can put a little bit of spite into it.

For example: I've become dedicated to getting good enough with E. Honda in SF6 so that I can eventually go toe to toe with one friend's Zangief and another friend's Ed with some consistency.

And I have also become dedicated to beating Blood (1997) on Extra Crispy because I want to prove I am that sort of madman.

That plateau you hit when trying a new skill/hobby after practicing for a little while is the bane of my existence lol. The second my progress becomes less noticeable than before (even if I'm still making progress) my motivation just goes out the window

2

u/ThisIsntOkayokay 1d ago

No...no. Once I've mastered something I'm told I should feel that boost of happiness or completion, I felt nothing but the waste of time on something I didn't really love doing. I only did it to finish it because it became an itch that scratching failed to solve. The list of survival and building skills I've learned just in case I may need it someday is staggering to me now. It doesn't help unless in that emergency state. The brain is a jerk when it refuses to give the happy signals.

I have auDHD and it's beautiful! I'm me.

Maybe that was me as a kid but at 50 I've tried and sucked at so many different things that it's my default expectation now.

1

u/SepticRedK 1d ago

I told my friend that I suck at drawing and she said keep practicing. She's an amazing artist

1

u/ginger_minge 1d ago

If by "new hobby" they mean life, then absolutely this.

1

u/Sgt_Smartarse 1d ago

Digital art, drawing with pen and paper, stone chiseling, video games(rts and simulators mainly), surfing, snowboarding, cooking, scale modeling, and gardening.

Y'all gotta stop calling me out like this!!! 😭

1

u/FishieFoxxy 21h ago

Me with drawing 😭

1

u/Prestigious_Shift245 13h ago

Forget new hobbies, what about one that you've been working on for 20 years?

1

u/Neverlast0 11h ago

Yeah...

1

u/kpingvin 3h ago

Me, until there's 1 person in the whole world that's better than me at my current hobby.

u/Unlikely_Number_2331 3h ago

That's how I picked accounting as a major. "Hey this is hard.. let's do this!" 😂
