A while ago I heard a description of ADHD as "Imagine you have a fast car, but the steering doesn't work that well and the brakes went out a log time ago."
I think about that sometimes when my wife comes into the room and I proudly tell her that I spent the past 45 minutes alphabetizing my record collection, then she'll say something like "Didn't you come up here to put away laundry?"

nah, just don't want to be forced to do boring shit to just survive
forget taking over everything, that's capitalist propaganda limiting your brain
imagine what we could create, learn, do if we didn't have to force our brains to survive in this bullshit society that's destroying us

u/Velvet_Pop 1d ago
Yes, but there would be far less shame or a feeling if needing to complete it right now. You could have multiple projects going on at once that collectively take years to get through, which would be so much more satisfying than this stupid system that has most of our efforts dedicated to the machine and no energy for ourselves. If the baseline of living was stable for everyone and we didn't have to worry about survival, there would be so much relief. We would feel like a society that helps each other rather than steps on each other.
6
u/TrashPandaDuel 1d ago
I totally agree!! I guess I was generalizing that, personally, I'd have a project going in every room of the house! lol
Yeah, more freedom to do what makes us happy would result in a better world as a whole!

u/Sepje2911 1d ago
I look at those piles and always think “I learned so much from that”. Some skills I learned because of my hobbies I can apply to my everyday life. It might even taught me how to use my creativity in a different way or approach things with a different attitude. I love to learn new things, maybe that’s just my hobby.
3
u/Begone-My-Thong 1d ago
Yeah but we'd have fun exploring them even if we move onto the next thing
Society puts too much value on "creating a product" than the actual journey, ya know?

Did you learn something from the experience? Then it wasn’t unsuccessful. Plans were deferred, sure, but that’s not a failure.
Don’t be so hard on yourself :)
1
u/TrashPandaDuel 1d ago
Unsuccessful was the wrong word....
2
u/Brilliant-Arugula594 1d ago
Understandable. I find the language I use with myself to be very important in subtle ways like that. It’s easy to put all of the stuff I moved on from into an “unsuccessful” bucket mentally - maybe it’s not even an active thought process that gets me there. But the way my mind frames things like that, in my experience at least, has a lot of downstream effects in the way I feel about myself.
Just a reminder to be as kind to yourself as you are to the all the other people you love :)
2
u/Pg68XN9bcO5nim1v 14h ago
Nah, you have to reframe that. That pile is your arsenal of potential future entertainment. It will still be there in a few months or even years, and then you suddenly enjoy that one thing for a bit more, before you move onto another thing from arsenal or add something to it.
It only ever feels like time wasted because you tell yourself that. You're able to watch a movie without telling yourself that that is the movie you should be able to spend the rest of your life with, you can enjoy hobbies just the same.
1
u/Wonderful-Fox-323 18h ago
Yes but instead of seeing them as doom piles or unsuccessful hobbies we would see them as positive markers of growth and personal development

This comes up a lot, but I’m not sure how many folks realise how much harder commune life is than just having a job.
People who want this as an end in itself are grand, but there’s this view that it would be oh so much easier. Life would be 10 times harder, unless you are undertaking long shifts of physical labour now.
Basically cult life is having a job you can’t quit, where you aren’t able to pick a career path based on your aptitudes, where you don’t get annual leave and so on.
Anyone finding having a job hard, would find this nightmarish.
If you want to try out for commune life, go get a catering job somewhere and see how it goes. Having worked in high end kitchens and done office work, the later is just so much easier on the body and less exhausting.
7
u/markimarkerr 1d ago
Yeah the commune life is not at all what this person and others like them think. You're going to work your ass off, possibly for 13 hours a day, and as much as society does suck, there's specific rules in place that do help us with labor abuse and having that free time to whimsically create. You're also assigned a role within the commune. You may not like that role. Then you find yourself in the same, technically worse situation as you were in before. Now you have no creature comforts to hide away with.
No life is easy, and going further away from society will not be easier or necessarily better.
Also as an artist, this broken society gives me so much inspiration. If everything was idyllic, I'd stagnate creatively because there's not enough stimulation.
2
2
u/Blue_winged_yoshi 1d ago
It’s also always the people who’ve done the least amount of physical labour ever who think that joining a commune will be everyone else doing the hard work whilst they tie die some t-shirts before having a nap or something.
Nope, that’s just capitalism with extra steps, they’re wanting to value their trivial, in the scheme of things, creative input higher than those working their asses off in the fields and kitchens.
Give it a week and they’ll be desperate for capitalism to feed them Huel again, clothe them in fast fashion and to generate enough heat and shelter to keep them warm.

It's not whataboutism at all lol. It's called realistic expectations and reality. And if it's a mental dreamscape then why would anything anyone say on the internet affect your non reality? I have my dreamscapes that are also on the unrealistic side but because it's exactly that, a dreamscape, it doesn't fucking matter what someone outside of my head thinks. Jesus Christ grow a little skin there and don't be such a hippy.
Or go out there and let reality show you how things work. Has nothing to do with strangers on the internet with experience, letting you know the reality of what you want.
Seriously though, you're self inflicting and making yourself depressed. This is Reddit, people are going to have polarizing opinions and experience. If you don't want to hear it, don't engage online lol. YOU made yourself depressed, don't project that bullshit on us.

It's called a thoughtful response and extrapolating my thoughts so that I explain myself clearly to you, to avoid misunderstanding. Never understand people who get offended by a response that's more than a sentence.
Hippies have always and will always offer jack shit to this world, full stop. That's not whimsy, that's being lazy lol nice try.
And you just said you are now depressed from my reply... Yet I'm the one taking shit so seriously? Never met a hippy who wasn't an ignorant hypocrite lol goddamn y'all the same.
And for the record I'm an environmentalist and volunteer so I actually contribute to the things I want in life and am not some right sided person. When you grow up, you'll understand how things work.

u/versatilitarian 17h ago
Just got a new job that I make 6 figures where I get to use hyper focus to do design reviews twice as fast as other people so I don’t get in trouble for taking twice as long to finish tasks that I have no desire to do. I made the mistake of telling someone what goes on under the hood and they were appalled at how often I wait until last minute inspiration leads me to solve complex issue involving life safety. I know I’ll figure it out when the procrastination rush hits so I just wing it until that point. My reputation is frustrating people not cause I’m mean or rude… it’s cause I’m always right and they can’t fight the logic.
Signed- Middle aged late diagnosed audhd middle child that struggles to fit in with the other weirdo engineers in a subset of engineering that less than a few 1000 people do.
1
u/ZealousidealSkin941 10h ago
I'm not exactly sure what my flavor of neurospicy is.. but it's definitely on a spectrum. I can direct my hyperfocus like a superpower, but when I don't have a good channel for it.. my brain will spin out of control.. which is happening currently 🙃
I graduated with my 3rd degree (non-traditional adult, working & parenting student) back in December and going down to JUST focusing on my job while I'm at work is ✨not going well.✨ My last 2 years I was juggling 15-credit semesters on top of my full time job in the design and supply sector of the construction industry (really logistics and detail oriented stuff) and now I'm capable of spotting problems well before anyone else sees them.. fixing them and still spending too much of my day doom scrolling on my phone.
I'm never going to have THAT level of procrastination rush again and idk what to do now. Incidentally, my new GM is late diagnosed ADHD.. so like.. he gets it.. and he appreciates the value of what I do but HE'S really struggling with modifying my position to match my skills.. and compensation.. for those additional duties that I'm willing and capable of doing, and need to get done.. but NOT picking up just out of the goodness of my heart.
1
u/versatilitarian 37m ago
Sounds like you got so good at juggling a full bowling frame you forgot how to juggle a few tennis balls. It happens.
Have you looked into the research about dopamine being a motivation chemical, not a reward chemical? It seems like its easier to stay on task when I get done doing something that allows my mind to wander... like a nice walk. I think it lets my body bulk up on new dopamine stores before I get into the next round of effort. I just have to remember which things will give me motivation (like playing 2048 for a few minutes) instead of driving me further into the desire to be distracted (doom scrolling on Reddit). I bet if you pay attention to your energy and not your interest then reduce inputs you'll find the right rhythm.
1
u/LuukTheSlayer 1d ago
if you work in obscure fields you'll fit in
2
u/ZealousidealSkin941 1d ago
By 'obscure' I mean those weird niche jobs that you don't really think about their existence.. or how one might actually get one of those jobs.
Myself for instance; my job doesn't actually exist within my company.. I have a title that doesn't match how I spend my day at all.. I'm like a weird little ✨problem squirrel✨ rustling around fixing things that no one else realized was broken yet. Fortunately, my GM knows that my time is spent well, because the spreadsheets are not impressed 😂
11
u/LowIssue3445 1d ago
Not everyone with ADHD has hyperfocus.
11
u/Holiday_Selection881 1d ago
I feel for those individuals. I didn't want to pay the price for a custom exhaust on an old Cadillac I was building. So I taught myself how to weld in a weekend and whipped up a pretty badass exhaust.
7
u/LowIssue3445 1d ago
Yeah it sucks being primarily innatentive cuz you get the drawbacks w/o the hyperfocus benefit. But that's okay we all have our shit to deal with and I'm doing fine. That's awesome and super impressive that you learned how to weld a new exhaust, especially in such a short amount of time.
4
u/DrainTheMuck 1d ago
Yeah, I’m primarily inattentive and realizing my hyperfocus is usually just manifested as getting really into a video game or something - which is usually the only way I can really enjoy the game because otherwise I’ll get distracted constantly.
3
u/LowIssue3445 1d ago edited 22h ago
Actually now that you say that I guess I have an extremely limited hyperfocus with video games. That's it though. Wish it applied to other things.
*And even that's inconsistent

u/InNoWayAmIDoctor 23h ago

3
u/oceanduciel 18h ago
I’ve only experienced ADHD hyperfocus once, when I mapped out a whole multichapter fanfiction with individual plotlines for separate characters all the way down to the dates and times in a specific year it took place. I was driven by an energy I’ve never experienced before and haven’t experienced anything like it since.
I’m no stranger to the autism hyperfocus though, been through that so many times I’ve lost count.
0
u/Atheist_Republican 23h ago
I genuinely just thought it was a side effect of Adderall for other people, and not part of actual ADHD symptoms. I don't take stimulants so no hyperfocus for me.
5
u/fat_kaiju 1d ago
I'm going to sound impolite but I wish we had actual memes and not just twitter screenshots sometimes...
4
u/werbear 1d ago
Unnerfed autists would be dwarves, insanely good at exactly one thing and a bit wierd about everything else. Also technically living in caves but they have been decorated so much that the word doesn't fit them anymore.
Unnerfed ADHD folks would be elves, superhumanly good at everything because their hyperfixation rolled around often enough that they got their 10k hours in most things - they still consider all of them just small hobbies.
6
u/Griffoloveman 1d ago
Why are you saying autism/ADHD? They are very different.
9
u/Interesting-Ad6325 1d ago
They are also very similar. I like to think In some years there will be a united diagnostic in the icd
1
u/Griffoloveman 1d ago
There may be some overlapping symptoms in some individuals, but they are distinct neurological conditions. Many have no symptoms of autism whatsoever, but significant ADHD, which is the case with myself and my children.
1
u/AeonsSeen 1d ago
Post wouldn't make sense if it was only ADHD.
1
u/Griffoloveman 21h ago
It doesn't make sense to include ADHD at all. People with ADHD don't have hyper focus, they tend to have a difficulty with focus and staying on track.
2
u/AeonsSeen 21h ago
Lot of us have both tho, common comorbidities of each other.
To me, this post is very AuDHD =)

Ok but get this.
Sometimes I can focus it at a specific thing I want.
Not all the time, but I've kind of figured out my triggers and when I get it targeted it can be nuts.

The side effects though are still gnarly and not great.

I'll buy that. I am a clusterfuck of a person. By all rights I should be dead in a ditch somewhere. Somehow, by leveraging my broken brain, I've managed to pull off being fully retired and living rather comfortably, at 33. And that's where I've chosen to stop. My hyperfixated special interest is crime. I use it to write books, but I could have legitimately chosen to run a crime syndicate, and I think I could do it the way other autistic people build entire functioning transportation systems in their basement

As someone who just figured out how to do this, i'm gonna give y'all a secret
It's math. We have to bite the bullet and try to figure out how to do math. I know it sucks, but please trust me. Whatever hyperspecific, issue your brain has in relation to hyperfixations, it's mathematic. I promise trying to understand math as a language will help you unlock the full potential of ADHD. I'm really sorry </3

Sure, but I can’t stress it enough that the world ain’t gonna cater to what works for you. They’re still going to expect you to get shit done, and you gotta resist the temptation to just declare stuff incompatible to how you work and really put in the time to figure out how best you can adapt and where best to place your efforts so you can excel.
Cuz there are jobs & positions where it’s an advantage.
Don’t give in to victimhood & excises. Figure out what works for you and flourish.

Started reading the Bobiverse series where, while not openly stated to be autistic, features a nerdy engineer who opted for cryogenics only to wake up with his brain uploaded into a starship and sent off to colonise the galaxy by building copies of himself. It very much matches the tone of this post.

I just hyperfixate on older actors and binge their imdb then find a new one. Been doing it since, like, middle school. Tim Curry was the first I can recall and, yes, I'm still grieving.
1
u/darthwd56 11h ago
I dont think so, if I was able to choose what to focus on, my choices would still be all over the fking place and short term. Its not like my adhd choices right now are being forced on me. Its literally "oooo this is interesting....". I'd be happy if I could just not hyper focus on anything.
