2017 Africa Twin vs 23 Ibex 800
I love my KLR, but I’m looking to upgrade to something that’s a bit better at cruising on the interstate and getting to off-road places.
There’s a local 2017 Africa twin in decent condition near me with 30,000 miles for $6500.
There also an 2023 ibex 800 with 7,000 miles for 5,400.
I love the look of the Africa twin but I’m wondering if the ibex would be smart. I’m also worried if all the gadgets on the ibex are gonna be a headache to repair versus the simple Africa twin.
Which would you get?

My husband (coyotetrips) had a Honda Dominator in Germany (sold in the USA as a Honda NX650) and did a LOT of traveling on it, but upgraded to a 2000 Honda Africa Twin, and chose it for all of the reasons you've just said: better at Interstate travel, incredibly durable, and can be easily repaired himself. He also bought it because it was easier to travel with me on the back (but now I ride my own - a KLR). He still rides his Honda Africa Twin - it's his only motorcycle. In fact, he's out riding part of the Oregon BDR on it (too much for me - love off roading, but a BDR is probably beyond me), with two other "vintage" Honda Africa Twin riders. He loves it more than anything except me (I hope).

I can get parts for a Honda, can you get ibex parts?

Before buying I googled parts to see if they were available and it seems they are. That said, haven’t had any need to buy parts besides an oil filter so I can’t definitively give you an answer but it seems like parts are around. Also even if parts aren’t available from cfmoto I do believe they’re getting popular enough that theres aftermarket parts around.

I own a ‘23 Ibex800t. Bought it new towards the end of last riding season with ~50 miles on it. I got a great deal on it as I’m sure they didn’t want to still have a 3 year old new bike in the showroom when the ‘26’s came out. The price was super appealing, but overall I wish I would’ve bought a new Tenere or a used Africa Twin.
My 2 biggest issues with the Ibex have been the max speed you can set the cruise to is 80 which only was an issue when I was in South Dakota where the speed limit is 80 so I would’ve loved to set the cruise at 85-90. And the second issue is an extremely twitchy throttle at low speeds. It’s a known issue, so google that or test drive and experience it yourself. Ive been told both of those issues can be rectified by flashing the ECU but don’t have first hand experience with that so I can’t comment on that.
