Robot faction?
From what little has been revealed so far, we see only humans as characters. However, as this game takes place in a world that had a technologically advanced future, where are the robots?
I'm sure more will be revealed in time, but as machines are my favorite Stellaris builds, I would not mind playing them in afterworld as well.

Maybe the clankers caused this whole apocalypse so people are hesitant to repeat it?

My prediction is something like this as well. The only hint we have so far is that the apocalypse happened after a period of great technological advancements, which to me sounds like an AI singularity went wrong. It'd be interesting to find out how the humans won if so, but maybe there are robots in hiding somewhere as well?

Doubt they'll have playable robots as a faction. At least not on release. I could see there being robot armies used by Ancients or rogue robots on the map that could potentially be subverted to give you a massive advantage.
Having them be playable, if it's ever added, would most likely be a DLC added a few years down the line if the game performs well enough.

Just in time for 2029!

I don't think we will see full on sapient machines in the game, but I imagine there will be factions that heavily spec into using robotics.

My impression from the little we've heard so far is that the devs like to explore humans under crisis/pressure conditions. Robots would be a lot less interesting, but maybe a future DLC or something.

While I don't now if we'll get robot-themed factions or playstyles, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a lot of flavor events and the like that are robot themed. Would make little sense to not have that if the setting implies that the apocalypse happened sometime noticeably in the future from our time.

I think robots could be good as a faction you could become after the start. Like if you play as a very tech focused faction and rediscover/reinvent robots you could get "taken over" by a robot uprising or something, and maybe become a localised crisis or something.

Unaligned AIs would be nice.
Not exclusively malign ones, but also benign unaligned AI like the mining drones in Stellaris would add a lot to the world. Especially since they would be a great way to block resource deposits in the early game to drip feed midgame expansion.

Inevitably it will start out grounded and just get crazier and less interesting over time like Stelaris,
