This isn’t even accurate to how the Bible says husbands should act. Paul says in Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” Basically, you should love your wife enough to die for her. And if you love her enough to die for her, you should try to make sure she’s happy in the marriage. Later, in verse 28, Paul says, “…husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.” Basically, treat her like you would treat yourself. So this isn’t even accurate to how a “Biblical marriage” should be.

And God only has a problem with Adam listening to Eve on one very specific topic on one very specific occasion, which the AI quote conveniently ellipses over.

u/muaddict071537 Jul 28 '26
Exactly! And it was specifically with something that God very clearly told Adam not to do. It wasn’t because Adam listened to Eve. It was because he listened to Eve and did the one thing that God told him not to do.
There are also lots of instances in Scripture of men listening to and following the advice of women, including (but not limited to) their wives. God never took issue with it unless the woman in question was leading them to disobey God. They cherry picked one verse about God taking issue with it and then completely removed the context of why God had a problem with it.

To add, the first people to see Jesus post-resurrection were women. I don't think that's by accident.
This is wild for the time, as women were seen as lesser than men, but yet women were chosen to see the Messiah first before any man, even Jesus' own apostles. If these stories were to be fabricated, the LAST thing you want is for your eye-witness testimony to come from a woman, most wouldn't believe you off that alone.
And the greatest saint within Catholicism is Mary, a woman.

u/TricellCEO Jul 28 '26
There was another passage (and I believe it was from Paul as well) where it initially reads something akin to “a wife is to be a slave to her husband”, which is then immediately followed by “and a husband is to be a slave to his wife.”
Yet a lot of Christians only see the first passage, proof being those fucking umbrellas.

u/muaddict071537 Jul 28 '26
I don’t recall the passage you’re talking about, but I do know that Ephesians 5:21 says that spouses are supposed to be subject to each other. Basically a husband is supposed to be subject to his wife in addition to a wife being subject to her husband.
12
u/TricellCEO Jul 28 '26
I think that’s the passage I am recalling.
Been a while since I took a class on the NT.
5
u/muaddict071537 Jul 28 '26
I’m currently studying theology, so it’s been more recent for me. But I still have trouble recalling specific verses (I’m much better at recalling broad theological concepts), and even if I know the verse word for word, I can’t remember what specific verse it is so that I can cite it. So I get it.
6
u/theaholeinthisstory Jul 28 '26
There's absolutely no way Paul intended to say there should be equality between men and women
→ More replies (1)17
u/HobbitWithShoes Jul 28 '26
Eh, there are progessive ways to read Paul. For one thing- his actions don't line up with his words in regards to things like "women should keep silent in the church" when he praises women like Pheobe, Pricilla and Junia for preaching, teaching, and being named an apostle. And a lot of more egalitarian Christians read Paul's work as contrasting common Roman belief by following it up with mutual love and submission.
I'm not saying the the misogynistic reading isn't there, or that it isn't the most common reading. Just that there are plenty of Christians who don't follow that particular reading.

u/DementedPimento Jul 28 '26

You should check out the debate going on between Biblical scholars about the disputed and undisputed Pauline letters, if you haven't already. Paul in the undisputed letters is more positive about women. Pseudo-Paul is less so. I'm fairly new to the topic myself but I just wanted to mention it
9
u/GigiLaRousse Jul 28 '26
I recall this from hanging with theology nerds (who included believing Christians, but also agnostics, atheists, and a Muslim) around 2010.
Listening to sincere people who know their shit debate this stuff is so interesting, and has also made me scoff at anyone who insists their interpretation of the Bible is clearly the only correct one.
5
u/drlao79 Jul 28 '26
There isn't one way the Bible describes marriage (or anything else) because the Bible consists of multiple viewpoints from multiple authors over 500+ years. So inevitably when anyone tries to a construct "biblical" version of whatever there will be parts of the Bible they highlight and parts they subordinate.
20
u/IndependentAd2029 Jul 28 '26
It's pretty disingenuous to leave out:
Ephesians 5:22 "Wives should submit to their own husbands as they do to the Lord."
Ephesians 5:23 "The husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head and savior of the church."
Ephesians 5:24 "Wives should be subject to their husbands in everything, just as the church submits to Christ."
The men are compared to God and Jesus, while the women are compared to objects. Husbands have to love while wives have to obey.
12
u/Plightz Jul 28 '26
Yeah agreed. People probably shouldn't tout the bible as their guide for what dudes should do to their wives.
15
u/muaddict071537 Jul 28 '26
I was only intending to respond to the specific attitude in this image that men have no obligation towards their wife’s happiness. I was just responding to that attitude and how it’s not the case based on what the Bible says. Those verses are relevant if you’re trying to have a discussion about the passage as a whole, but I wasn’t attempting to do that. I was only meaning to point out how the AI guy is wrong here, so I don’t think it’s necessarily disingenuous that I didn’t also mention the verses about wives.

Ephesians 5:22: "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord."
Colossians 3:18-19: Repeats that wives should submit, while telling husbands not to be harsh with their wives.
It is absolutely Biblical. Women are second to men, under men, below men, however you want to put it, according to the Bible. There is a clear hierarchy. The reason it says this is because the book was written 2000+ years ago by men of the time. It is just fiction.

Honestly, so long as the problem is clearly communicated and I'm given parameters of improvement that are reasonable... I'd love to be told "I'm not happy with you" in marriage. And hey, if that's the start of the end because I find the changes desired are not reasonable, we can start the separation in a cordial and measured way.
Just imo

5
u/xXAnoHitoXx Jul 28 '26
Biblical marriage isn't even this. This is some right-wing goes: i want to treat my wife like an object and ignore what she has to say, so I'll slab "Biblical" infront of it to convince others to do the same and get what I want.
9
u/Prudent-Audience619 Jul 28 '26
The verse is taken out of context. This is not at all what Christians believe in (at least the ones who are actually acting like a Christian)
6
u/mothspiderr Jul 28 '26

Sadly, I haven't encountered many Christians that actually act like Christians. They seem to be pretty thin on the ground, judging by what so-called Christian messaging seems to get the most amplification—and how little pushback it receives from other Christians. It's one of the reasons I'm no longer Christian.

25
u/Jazzlike_Pound7742 Jul 28 '26
But it isn't biblical. The Bible tells me to love my wife as I love myself. So any man dismissive of his wife isn't a good Christian man, and is infact dismissive of himself. He and his wife are one.
A good Christian man will listen to the wisdom of his wife and will then make decisions that are best for both of them, not for him. A man who chooses to make decisions for himself and not for both he and his wife is a bad husband, biblical or otherwise.
18
u/lynypixie Jul 28 '26
A couple should make decisions together. They are a team.
I have been married 22 years. The idea of submission horrifies my husband as much as I.
→ More replies (6)7
u/TDS_isnt_real Jul 28 '26
Exactly. Been with my wife almost 17 years now and there’s no way I’d ever be with a woman that wasn’t my equal in every decision. A power imbalance isn’t a marriage to me, it’s something else.
I genuinely have trouble understanding “I love my wife” and “I make the decisions for both of us” being compatible. My children need guidance, not my spouse.

The sort of person who believes in these sorts of fairy tales doesn't have the prefrontal cortex development necessary to understand how doing this defeats their own argument.
To wit: If you have to heavily edit a passage to change its meaning, it is an admission that no passage actually exists that supports that meaning, because you could just use that one instead.

While i find the comic/meme abhorrent and agree that many use the bible out of context... Let's, perhaps, not speak of all religious people as if they were brain damaged sponges. Religious extremists i agree, but, y'know. It aint pretty nor helpful nor virtuous to just shun others for being religious, especially if doing so doesn't hurt anybody.
→ More replies (8)3
u/Comprehensive_Pin565 Jul 31 '26
I dont think religous people have brain damage, and I also dislike when people say that. It's just dumb because humans can be convinced to do all kinds of terrible things without brain damage being involved. It's an attempt to cast people as "lesser" so they don't have to consider they might fall into the same trap.
But, I don't know if I think religon is harmless. Magical thinking is pretty dangerous, and supporting a religon like Christianity also carries water for some of the worst elements of it.

22
u/johnsolomon Jul 28 '26
Unsurprisingly it also takes the Bible verse out of context. It's not a statement about wives in general, it's specifically about Adam choosing to ignore God's explicit warning and follow Eve's suggestion instead. So it doesn't even make sense
→ More replies (1)3
u/CemeteryDweller7719 Jul 28 '26
I was just thinking that these things must be made to make incels feel better. The idea that you are supposed to go out, find a woman, marry her, and then hate her and treat her with contempt at all times… why? It always shows the "wrong way” to have a marriage, by being "whipped” by caring about the wife in any way, and the "right way” by openly hating the wife and not caring about her at all. What kind of weird recommendation is it to say get married to (essentially) punish a woman for life by treating her with contempt every opportunity you have for the audacity of being a woman that agreed to marry you…
18
u/maneki_neko89 Jul 28 '26
Here’s the full verse, without that specific highlight and selective use of ellipses:
“And to the man[b] he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;”

Actually, left is biblical marriage.
Modern marriage would be the married couple "breaking up" like they're high schoolers.
True marriage is working together to fix things and stay together through anything, thick and thin except cheating.
Also Jesus said to love your wife as he loves the church. Not loving and respecting your wife is wrong.

This is a bad take.
What if one partner punches the other one? That's not cheating. Should they try to work through it?
What if one partner finds out that the other is a serial murderer? That's not cheating.
What if one partner finds out that the other likes to torture neighborhood cats?
What if one partner has a habit of publicly humiliating their children and calling it "pranks?"
What if one partner has a gambling addiction and secretly gambles away all the other partner's life savings and inheritance from their parents and their children's college fund?
There are literally endless scenarios where staying would be damaging to everyone involved and that can't really be worked through. Cheating is pretty low on the list, honestly.

Normally you’d expect them to show a dutiful wife being submissive and subservient, and the man as the perfect unchallenged head of household.
