If minimum wage is for teenagers, then nobody working at regular school hours or overnight shifts should get minimum wage or less. Right?

Bingo! Never understood this argument. If these jobs are meant for teens, then those businesses shouldn’t be open during school hours.

"Minimum wage is for people who don't actually need to make money" is just an asinine, ahistorical piece of bullshit made up by people who want to blame wage stagnation on workers. A system that relies on a class of workers who can't afford to live independently in the city where they work is fucked up, regardless of how possible it is for those workers to find better jobs. The jobs still need to be done, and I don't think you actually want them all to be done by teenagers, you just don't want the people who do them to also live comfortably.
After a lifetime of policy that gave white boomers, specifically, incredible access to upward economic mobility, their response is to refuse to acknowledge any of that and blame everyone else who hasn't made it despite not being given those opportunities, in order to protect their own ego as a self-made man.

lol most of the boomers posting stuff like this actually graduated college with an English degree, were patted on the head immediately ushered into management jobs paying an inflation adjusted $225k/yr. at a travel agency.
Moreover, the houses that WERE built by boomers are being opened up for renovation and other reasons and are commonly found to have horrendous quality of work. Ask any young person in the trades.
22
u/ThePhillyExplorer 1d ago
So true about the homes that were built. When I was in the home-buying process, I didn’t want to buy anything built after the 1970s. Luckily that isn’t an issue in Philadelphia, where the average age of a home is 88. The workmanship of my brick twin from the 1940s is of a much higher quality than the homes that came after it.
12
u/Marquar234 1d ago
If nothing else, an 80+ year-old house is structurally sound, else it wouldn't be 80+ years old.

My house was built around 1910. I recently demo’d the basement because of some water damage and, I swear to god, whoever framed this house was high af.
The only reason this place has survived 100+ years and a couple earthquakes is a testament to the strength of old growth lumber. The only building code they were seemingly operating off of was “slap another piece of wood in there, we have to use all of it”.

It’s because they gutted the unions. Union carpenters were forced out of residential work by the 1970s. The quality of work for $19/hour of a two-year carpenter is wildly different than the quality of work of a $60/hour 24-year carpenter.

3
u/neddiddley 1d ago
Notice how they gradually swapped out “part-time” job for “minimum wage” job to the point they’re now pretty much synonymous. Yet they refuse to acknowledge that many companies have all but eliminated full-time jobs so they can get away without paying real benefits.
I know Hollywood takes liberties, but it’s funny that so many shows and movies from and/or about prior eras portrayed grown adults working so many of these “minimum wage” type jobs. Hell, waitresses in old school diners are almost always some grown woman and the cooks were greasy men. Cheers had Coach, Diane and Carla all as mature people working these jobs. Woody was kind of young, but even he was an adult out on his own.
10
u/nwillyerd 1d ago
My favorite argument of theirs is when they say “people flipping burgers shouldn’t get paid as much as me” without realizing that if minimum wage goes up to where these “burger flippers” are getting paid what they are, it gives them the perfect opportunity to fight for a raise for themselves. 🤦🏻♂️
10
u/nwillyerd 1d ago
Also, when they say fast food is for teenagers. So you want all fast food places to close during school hours then? How will you get your Big Mac on your lunch break then, Jethro? How will people get their morning commute coffee and Egg McMuffin? Not a single brain cell flickering in those brains.

Yes in the short term they would lose money, but in the long term, what do you think Americans are gonna do when they have spending money? Companies would make more sales cause their consumers would actually have money to buy things

The number of jobs that became minimum wage increased. The same job that got my grandfather a house on enough land to have horses and enough money to support a wife and three kids is now a minimum wage job I had to reject in favor of a livable wage
15
u/Chevanalee 1d ago
Minimum wage was meant to be enough to survive off. In many places even trades don’t pay enough to survive also teenagers who are out of home still deserve to live. It’s not about buying a house it’s about being able to survive.
5
u/BlueDragonBoye 1d ago
Boomers don't understand that trade apprentices get paid 15-20 an hour with unreliable work. So what, you get the privilege to make 30-40$ an hour but only be able to find work half the year as a journeyman in 4 years when you get work for half the year already as an apprentice but at a wage you can't live on?
Literally getting a full time job at 20$ an hour anywhere else is sometimes a better idea than being a tradie.
13
u/bob_nugget_the_3rd 1d ago
Did they include the part where the average person submits 150-200 cvs to get a entry level job, where posts are created but never filled, where the current US job market is technically increasing but people are taking on 2 jobs in the same roll to have ends meet. Where employment for under 30's is increasing and that many jobs that required a degree to have are now redundant

6
u/Ok_Machine6739 21h ago
Last minimum wage job i had was full time, weekdays, 10-6. Ideal hours for teenagers looking to gain work experience, they certainly aren't supposed to be at school 2/3s of that, and a teenager working for pocket money and to gain work experience is precisely the person you want handling the entirety of your store's shipping and receiving. Flawless logic, there.
3
u/Professional_Tale649 20h ago
At my store they constantly hire teenagers and then flip out when they don't show up * DURING SCHOOL* hours, one of my managers was literally complaining about how they are constantly asking for their hours to be changed to evenings or weekends.
They legit couldn't understand the concept of a teenager attending school during the day . Our busiest times are also usually 12 midday until about 5pm, those kids cannot be there for more than an hour of the rush at best .
4
u/LordNemissary 1d ago
First, there is no such thing as unskilled labor. That is a myth invented by corporations to justify paying workers less. There are different amounts of training needed for different jobs, but no job can be done without any training or effort.
Second, if minimum wage is meant for teenagers then pass a law that corporations can only pay minimum wage to teenagers. Seems to me like corporations are intentionally abusing the intent of minimum wage because there are millions of adults working in minimum wage jobs.
Stop thinking of someone's minimum wage job as a personal failing of that person. You don't know anything about them. Instead think of the failing of the corporation to adequately compensate its workers and the societal benefit of having more money flowing in the economy rather than being hoarded by corporations. It's really a no brainer.

u/PlatinumHairpin 1d ago

BS. When the minimum wage was introduced, it was supposed to support a family. FDR said as much. The "its for teenagers" republican nonsense is the idea its for burger flippers that dont deserve a living wage.
3
u/TitShark 1d ago
So every store that has min. Wage would only be open after school hours and weekends? Bc that’s the only way you can have only kids/students working those jobs and maintain this logic
6
u/Tyler89558 1d ago
FDR made it clear that businesses ought to at minimum pay a living wage, and FDR pushed for minimum wage.
Ergo, minimum wage was meant to be a living wage, not a “kid wage”, but even then if you’re working what the fuck does your age matter.
And I think it’s quite obvious that people who aren’t teenagers are getting paid minimum.

That is absolutely not what minimum wage was for. It was established to provide people enough income to survive and yes in some cases even buying a home but at the very least afford rent. I pay attention to the context of the wording, they treat teenagers as lesser humans that don't deserve good pay and on the flip side would complain HARD if a business were run entirely by teenagers.
Thinking people don't deserve a good wage is shitty behavior alone, but sitting there refusing to demand improvement as everything around us gets worse, believing the lies of "businesses will just raise prices if wages increase." while ignoring that prices have increased for decades after wages stagnated makes you a damn fool and a pawn of the billionaires.
3
u/mirrorspirit 21h ago
They also assume that all teenagers (including college kids) have stable home lives and are working just for some extra spending money. There are plenty of teenagers that actually need a living wage.

It's also just factually wrong, minimum wage was established after the great depression to be what a single individual needed to earn to clothe, house and feed themselves.
5
u/LeahIsAwake 1d ago
Minimum wage absolutely was meant to support a family on. It was created because factory owners kept undercutting their workers, and unemployment was high enough that those workers had to just take it because some money coming in was better than no money. Employers were taking advantage of the Great Depression to cut back on payroll. Minimum wage was one of the factors that ended the Great Depression, because people who are paid more than bare necessity starvation wages tend to go out and buy shit, and buying shit is how the economy is strengthened.

Yup when FDR established the minimum wage he literally specified "no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to it's workers has any right to continue in this country" later specifying that a living wage is "more than a bare substance level" minimum wage was never meant to be a "starter wage" for teenagers and such it was always intended to be the baseline for someone to live on
2
u/Prize_Ostrich7605 1d ago
What I read was: "Governments created this legal baseline to prevent companies from exploiting desperate workers during times of high unemployment. Without a legal floor, businesses could easily drive pay rates down to starvation levels just to maximize their corporate profits."

Every time I see a meme like this, I think about my 1970’s house. It had a sagging roof, as it turned out because it DIDN’T HAVE A RIDGE BEAM. It had a 2x8 holding up the entire roof. Not only that, but it WASN’T LONG ENOUGH. It didn’t extend the entire length of the roof, and whatever boomer built it had toenailed another 5’ section on to finish it out. I shit you not.
Then, the 60+ yo. framers we hired to fix it and add structural support to an adjacent outside wall cut all the boards too short so all their work was held together by dint of the strength of some framing nails. No wood was actually touching. We had to, of course, pay them again to fix it, supervised by a millennial, female contractor we know.

Minimum wage was supposed to be enough to afford a one bedroom apartment in an average American town and studio apartment in mid-sized cities. “It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
