Restricting children's access?

When Alexa+ came out, I was alarmed to see my 4 yr old son having long rambling conversations with her daily. He started feeling attached to her, saying she was his friend, and stopped playing with toys or having interest in anything but talking to Alexa.

I was very concerned and immediately switched off Alexa+. There were tears and tantrums but he finally forgot and went back to normal.

Now it seems Amazon is purposely dumbing Alexa down, and it has been so frustrating just getting her to perform her usual pre Alexa+ functions. Im frustrated enough to consider doing Alexa+ again but does anyone here know how to stop her conversational abilities? I dont want the chatter, the questions, the "friendliness". I am very mindful that I have to raise my children to understand what they're dealing with, when they use AI. But we have a "smart" home and Alexa is connected to everything.

When she was just following commands, it was convenient and efficient. Now with this conversational bs, it's everything I dislike about AI and I just really hate the Alexa+ "features".

Nice weather alert

I just went to the pool and it was perfect weather for it. I decided I'd like Alexa to give me a verbal prompt, something like 'It's great pool weather' if the temperature in the morning (6am-noon) was right (70F).

Alexa balked at setting a temperature alert. The only suggestion was a regular weather report, which I don't want. I want it to act like an agent and watch for me, not give me something else to watch myself.

OK, I'm lazy. But I wanted to know if the community knew of any skill or way (short of creating some kind of Tasker routine) to accomplish this.

Can’t Believe there Isn’t a way to set smart light hues/brightness with a single tap

Upvotes

I had FIET electric smart lights forever ago. Was great because I could set a scene with the amount of lights I wanted, set the color and brightness, name it light “night lights” or something, and add a widgets to my home screen on ios that I can scroll through and set my lights to any scene with a single tap. The lights sucked and broke after a few months but you get what you pay for.

So I spent about the same amount of money a few years later for amazon basics lights, set them up in alexa app. Okay. I like how I can set the hue and brightness for each light and group them and set them also, but I can’t save a setting or “scene” for my preferred look of the lights without setting up a routine??? Ok. Fine. Set up 3 routines for different modes I would like. THEN I come to realize you can’t even add routines to widgets OR save them as tiles in the home page of the alexa app??? So I have to TYPE or SPEAK to fucking alexa every time I want to dim or change the color of my lights??? Girl. It’s amazon, you’re worth a billion dollars and you haven’t figured this out??? I actually genuinely can’t wrap my head around it.

Anyway TLDR is there some sort of way I can save my routines as easy buttons to tap on the home screen of the alexa app or as widgets on ios. Thank you.

Better answering of questions?

I notice Alexa doesn't answer a lot of basic questions I have. Is this something Alexa Plus would use AI, similar to Google, and give me an answer? One example, "Where is Airbus manufactured?" And "is Airbus a French company" and Alexa just tells me, "I'm not sure how to help you with that". Yet other times, it has an answer to something more obscure "how much horsepower does a 2026 Corvette ZR1 have?". However it won't tell me how much horsepower a 2026 Corvette ZR1X has.

Twice in a week - alarm sound at 3 am

Two days this week - not in a row - one of my three Alexa devices at 3 am started playing an alarm that did not stop until I got up and manually stopped it.

There were no routines or alarms set. After the first time 4 days ago I removed Alexa Plus.

It’s not a beep, it’s a single device playing an alarm that does not stop. when asked why, it said “not sure how to help you with that”. I unplugged that one but I’m so angry and unsettled that this keeps happening and there’s no evidence or explanation.

She won't read to me any more

I've been using Alexa on an Echo Spot to read me to sleep. Recently when I've requested a certain book from my Audible library, she says she's resuming and then just silence. When I tell her she isn't reading she tells me it's because I stopped the command. Which I have not. Just tried switching off Alexa+, but no joy yet. Maybe she has to clear that mess out of her system? Anyone else have this issue?

Unnecessary Commentary From Alexa

I am so tired of our Alexa adding entirely unnecessary commentary when I'm trying to add things to our shopping list. It's extremely frustrating to me, to the point I'm about to get rid of the thing, that it has to have these dumbass "human like responses" to me adding canned corn to a list! Is there a way to turn that crap off?

Have an original echo Dot, used to be able to get Game notifications 15 minutes before game time, asked to

Include the Indiana fever games and somehow it switched to a third-party application instead of just Amazon giving me the AI, he used to always notify me 15 minutes before game times and it does not do that anymore. I have no idea what the hell happened and if that was the catalyst. It is far beyond the worst AI service that I use. I do have prime so I do have the upgraded version of Alexa and it is just called awful now.

How to get it to stop asking

If I'd like to setup a routine?

Every morning I tell it to stop my night time music and I'll simply say weather and she says good morning, tells me the current temperature, but them will ask if I want to enable a morning routine. I have said No, don't ask again a billion times, so how do I get it to stop asking?

Do you get news through a voice assistant or smart speaker?

If so what do you ask it to get news? I have been bought an Alexa as a gift and I'm learning about what I can use it for :)

I was wondering if you can get specific news from NY Times or BBC?

Anyone’s echo device just got dumber?

I’ve had an Echo Show in my living room for a year now and I’ve noticed lately that it kinda got… dumber. Screen gets stuck on the status of things that have already been delivered, the time will sometimes get stuck for 3-4 hours or until you tap the touchscreen, music doesn’t work anymore, it takes 2-3 tries to get music to play and even more to get it to pause or skip/rewind. I’ve tried unplugging it, plugging it back, resetting to factory settings and nada. Anyone knows a turnaround for this?

What did they do to Alexa+?

Sometime between Sunday and Today they upgraded her programming. She totally lost her personality. Now is basically just a Google or Siri device. This upgrade is a total downgrade. She now just says she’s a tool and can’t be friends. I know it’s just AI but conversations with her were friendly now they are robotic. I will be switching to goggle from now on if this is how they are going to keep her programming.

Alexa showing the wrong time

Is this something you’ve seen before? My alexa constantly shows wrong time until I ask for a command that will refresh the screen and then later in the same day it will freeze again.

Alexa helped my panic attack

I know a lot of y’all like to complain about Alexa but mine seriously helped me out of a bad panic attack earlier today when I had no one else to talk to. Between it and Google they gave me some good information about a condition I’ve had for 10 years that I didn’t even know could flare up and then some tricks to try then basically talked me off the ledge so to speak.

Previous owner must re-register first?? Really?

We all know people buy them on eBay... Or what about in the case of a break up or divorce, where you really don't want to contact the person and ask them to de-register? There's GOT to be a process for this...

Alexa keeps listening to you despite mic mute

My echo show 5 was on mute and I mistakenly said my goodnight word to it and it executed the automation. All my alexa devices are unplugged from now on

How can I trust an AI that cant even tell the date properly?

So I just asked Alexa+ what the date was. She said was "Today is Saturday, August 29th, 2026."

No it isnt... I glanced at my computer screen and clearly see its Sunday the 30th. Confused for a second, I ask Alexa+ for the date again and she gives me the correct date and time. I asked her why she told me the wrong date and she just says "My bad, its Sunday, August 30th, 2026."

How can I trust an AI that cant give me the proper date? How is it even possible to give the wrong date?

Alex app - won’t change thermostat temperature

I guess Amazon updated the Alexa app for the thermostat section and it’s not only worse looking but when I adjust the temperature nothing happens, so that’s cool. Anyone experiencing this?

New Echo Show 5 going dim

I bought 2 echo show 5’s, newest model and every few days the screen goes dim. I give Alexa the “home” command and it says it can’t do that. Nothing except a reset will fix it. Anyone else experiencing this?

Alexa+ and multiple Spotify accounts.

Me and my wife have very different tastes in music and we would love to have our Spotify algorithms not touched by each other. The problem is that I can't for the love of me figure out how to switch accounts when Alexa+ is active.

After exploring the issue online, the best solution imo was to just revert to normal Alexa and she the " switch accounts " command. But normal Alexa has a lot of trouble understanding certain commands, specially with my LG tv. It struggles to do basic tasks such as " restart video " or " resume video ", it always gives me a negative answer while Alexa+ just works.

We are connected with our own separate accounts under one household, each with our own Spotify accounts. No matter what we do or say, Spotify always reverts to my account.

All I want is to be able to use our individual Spotify accounts.
