Random Question š Why do people hate Mamdani?
He closed a $12B deficit in 132 days, fixed 100K+ potholes, secured millions for gig workers, fined corrupt landlords millions, raised snow workers to $30/hr, and violent crime hit historic lowsā¦
He closed a $12 billion deficit without cutting a single city service
He is proof that politicians could get a lot of shit done if they actually cared about people

It's almost like the wealthy propaganda is just that....? Prior to Reagan, even average Americans knew that investing into the middle class (education, infrastructure, healthcare) is a net positive and grows the economy while reducing deficits. We've let the wealthy take control of the tax code, buy all representation in government, and corporatize the media for their own benefit. 46 years later, here we are, with red hats voting for their own economic hardship and carrying water for a few billionaires.

Wrong. Removing the fairness doctrine AND instigating trickle-down economics, was the first step. Second step was parts of the telecommunications act of 1996, that allowed corporations to purchase other corporations outside of their industry. Then eventually came citizens united

I mean, I donāt think youāre wrong that CalPERS has become a massive strain for a lot of municipalities. But thatās also the result of decades of benefit expansion, underfunding, and bad assumptions compounding together not just any single pension restructuring measure.
I think the fair criticism is āthese tools can become dangerous if they turn into a permanent habit,ā not āevery pension smoothing measure automatically leads to collapse.ā Thereās plenty of cities where it has been useful and successful as a tool (including nyc itself in the 70s). Itās one of the largest economic centers on Earth with vastly more revenue capacity and state leverage. That doesnāt make pension risk fake, but it does make the comparison less one-to-one with a 40k person city.→ More replies (4)14

So, the budget piece itself is a bit of smoke and mirrors, as well as the height of hypocrisy in some ways.
Smoke and mirrors - kicking the can on mandates of reducing classroom sizes, and funding returement for government workers isnāt balancing the budget. It is just kicking the can. It comes right back to you as debt. It also has an $8 billion dollar infusion of State dollars. thatās just pushing peas around a plane, now the state needs to find the funds.
Hypocrisy - the man reduced costs in payroll to the tune of over a billion. Fast. ācutting overtimeā I believe it is called out as. Now.. when we watched a right leaning watchdog do this at the Federal level⦠we all but eviscerated the guy, and for good reason in my little opinion. But now we celebrate this one doing some not so dissimilar things.
I applaud someone trying to make a difference. Whatever side of the aisle. But letās be transparent about the real numbers and real long term effects, not pull a one year stunt that is projected to be right back at a $7 billion deficit within 24 monthsā¦

u/Josh_Butterballs May 14 '26
Mamdani ran on increasing taxes on the rich. This could in theory be done by raising income tax which he does not have the power to do. The governor of NY Kathy Hochul would rather die than do anything to extract more money from the wealthy and so Mamdaniās backup plan was property taxes.
That in itself was his leverage to compel Hochul to at least give up state money. Mamdani was betting that Hochul would be so against any increase in taxes for the wealthy that she would rather just give a cash injection to the city, which she did. She gave up the money, Mamdani cedes the property tax increase plan.
20
u/WoolyEarthMan May 14 '26
This raises the question: why did he run on something he has no control over?
15
u/Josh_Butterballs May 14 '26
In a post truth world itās really the only way to get elected and Iād argue even before that since itās not the first time a politician has straight up lied or embellished to get elected. If you tell the painful truth youāll get āthis guy is offering very little for my vote. Why would I vote for himā whereas your opponent with lies has an inherent advantage āCuomo is promising to fix everything. Lower my taxes, and solve nyc crime the week heās in office. Mamdani isnāt offering anything but a slow, modest āsolutionā that will take years and might not even work!ā
We have already seen this works when we see how many lies Trump put out during the election. So many lies and people believed it or put their faith in it having at least a grain of truth in it.
āNo more warsā
āIāll solve the war in a dayā
āIām gonna lower the cost of groceries as soon as Iām in officeā
Paraphrasing, but you get the point. The left is calling for Dems to stop pursuing modesty and decorum because itās not working and all it really does is let the opposition steam roll over you. The reality is the average citizen eats up lies. Iām not saying what he said during the campaign trail was morally right just btw.
People donāt want the ugly truth. They want the beautiful lie. If you give them the former you donāt get anywhere near a position to try and fix it most of the time.

Hochul is running for re-election this year. It was unrealistic for Mamdani to expect her to okay a massive tax increase while she's actively running for re-election.
It is also short sighted because there is a chance NY could elect a Republican govenor.
This is what frustrates me about the voices around Mamdani- it quickly becomes "You are either with us or against us" without acknowledgement of the larger system.

Agreed, all these "facts" look good at face value, but very little digging was needed to get a better picture.
12B deficit - 75% of it alone was from a state bailout. The spending still looks to be way too much.
100 000 potholes - finding exact numbers is hard but previous 3 years, they had fixed 500 000 pot holes.
Lowest crime - the biggest year to year drop came last year under previous mayor. if a mayor dropped the murder # from 100 to 2 and then the new mayor drops it from 2 to 1. Yes hes brought it to the lowest # but previous mayor should get most of the praise.

Who or what was the federal watchdog that reduced overtime without removing the agency?
The Right gets criticized for removing agencies that protect consumers and raising the deficit through tax cuts. It's impressive how fast Mamdami has implemented popular policies and has balanced the budget while doing so. We've been told this is impossible for so long.
57
u/DogEqual5459 May 14 '26
Propaganda mostly. But there is a smaller contingent that dislike not Mamdani, but that leftists take unverified and undetailed soundbytes as gospel and use it to inflate Mamdani.
You listed multiple such inflations here. That he closed the deficit, for instance, is untrue. He proposed a budget for the next fiscal year that had no deficit. That's not the same as actually closing the deficit. It's no more than a spending proposition for future, not the same as actually having no deficit in what's been spent. Currently, he is still spending at a deficit.
This is a massive problem in how people talk about Mamdani. He says he'll do something, then leftists do zero research and act like he's already done it. Anyone can propose a budget without a deficit. The key is what's actually in the budget versus what's been cut, and whether his predictions pan out when it's time to actually execute stuff.
Furthermore, his proposed budget leans on his own team's revenue projections, which of course they will spin positively, and a majority of his programs haven't started yet so there's no way to really gauge what he'll actually spend. Take universal pre-K. He didn't achieve universal pre-K, he achieved a pilot program with limited participants. A step in the right direction, but not the same as actually getting the thing. We won't be able to speak to the cost of the greater program until some years from now, assuming he's able to build on the pilot program.
7
u/JacobStills May 14 '26
Yes. Just a few months ago there were several posts trying to credit Mamdani with the crime rate in New York being at an all time low.
Despite the fact that crime statistics are usually conducted over the course of several months and Mamdani at the time just got elected and was only in office for a few weeks.
6
u/DogEqual5459 May 14 '26
Yeah, I had a couple of debates with people about that. I work in politics/policy, and so I end up debating leftists, MAGA, and everything in between with some frequency.
This is definitely a weakness of the left, albeit one that other political groups have as well; this allergy to hard details. Most of the leftists I've met couldn't care less for the details of logistics or actual execution. It's just rhetoric for many of them. You could, of course, say that about quite a few political groups in the U.S., so that may just be a broader education problem.
6
u/JacobStills May 14 '26
Oh tell me about it. It's very frustrating, I've been called a "centrist" so many times because I call out bullshit from both the far right and the far left; despite the fact that I would personally classify myself as progressive. It's just in general social media is on a populism high where it's all about vibes and simple slogans.
And of course like you said a broader educational problem; it's amazing how so many don't know basic civics.
"No! Codifying a law doesn't make it immune to the Supreme court."

He didn't close the deficit, he raided my teacher pension and begged the state for money. Neither of those are long term solutions and both are toxic. We have tons of evidence to see what a terrible idea turning pensions into a ponzi scheme is, he's delaying reduction in class sizes and other services on top of that, and taking money from poor new yorkers to fund NYC is the opposite of leftism.
I voted for him because he said he supports education. Now his first big move around education is to delay the promised 30k extra hires for our understaffed schools, steal from my pension, and delay reducing class sizes. Not impressed.
Antisemitism is at an all time high in NYC thanks to his embracing Hamas, his bigoted ass wife, and his bigoted hires. He's giving the green flag for Jew hatred.
I don't see what he's gotten done. He closed the deficit for 1 year IF Hochul gives him everything he wants and he raids union pensions.
I had high hopes for him, but he's turned out to be the meme Fox News presented him as.
"Your city is broke? Just beg mom for money and steal from the middle class!!" #socialism
It's like a teenager who racks up 12k in credit card debt and then his mom gives him 8k and he opens a second credit card for the other 4k and he declares he paid off his debt lol
"I did it! I paid off my credit card debt!"
I think what bugs me the most about Mamdani is how he presents himself as this class warrior, but when push comes to shove he's just another biased politician who lies through his teeth to keep his approval rating up. I expect it from MAGA, but I demand better from people I vote for.

Iām not a fan of the guy but donāt hate him.
My concerns stem from the fact that his MO is very much like Trumpās, his āaccomplishmentsā just as dubious, and the fact that his supporters donāt seem inclined to ask questions or apply critical thinking to what he does.
For example: When Obama bailed out GM, we didnāt praise GM for āsolving their financial crisis.ā
Mamdani didnāt balance a budget, he got a 4 billion dollar check in the form of a bailout from the state of NY that wiped out 75% of the budget shortfall.
Iām not necessarily adverse to the bailout happening as it isnāt like he made the mess thatās being cleaned up, but portraying that as a success of his polices isnāt right either.
Iām definitely not a fan of how heās handled the uptick on antisemitism in his city, nor his apparent prioritization of events happening on the other side of the world over local concerns, plus his and his wifeās comments on those same issues.
Asking New Yorkers who pay some of the highest city taxes in the US to volunteer to shovel snow and then making it a hassle to do so was also not a great look.
Itās still early in his term but most of the promises he made in his campaign seemed impractical at best and there hasnāt been a lot of movement on them for what seem to me to be fairly obvious reasons when the promises were made.

Because rich people own the media.
Mamdani wants to tax the rich, which wont hurt their standard of living one bit, they wont notice any changes in their day to day life.
But if people see that such approaches work to improve the daily lives of citizens (it does, every time) and proves that such approaches can make the budgets of a city work (it does, every time) then more people will want his type of politician and politics.
And the rich cant have that. They need total control over us peasants, and to keep things societally broken so they make more money and we fight amongst ourselves instead of targeting the real problem, the rich.
Thus they make their media organizations spew anti socialist and anti progress propaganda, so people vote against their best interests.

People hate him because:
Half this country is conservative, so they naturally just hate anyone on "the other side".
Most others that hate him feel that way because he has an army of obnoxious dick riders. Saying he closed the deficit in 130 days is a great example of this, because he closed it by getting a loan, not by doing anything savvy with his policy. Claiming this as a policy success is MAGA-level puffery and causes people to hate him like they hate Trump.

He wants to tax the rich to balance the books. But he can't, what he can do is raise property taxes, which disproportionately affects the rich more, but would still affect everyone. (While austerity measures would do the opposite, disproportionately affect the poor.)
The state governor doesn't like either option.
So I believe the state is covering it to help avoid tax increases.

Not really, the number of people in NYC is declining, as is the revenue, but the state is paying an increasing amount of its revenue to NYC. Ā Also, as the population of NYC declines, so does federal monies, while spending increases.
Education funds have dropped dramatically, as the number of students has fallen by 250,000,but the number of teachers and administrators has exploded.
Test scores have dropped even as NYC is spending over $42,000 per student per year, the highest in the nation for several years in a row, and the get what?

Maybe mentioning this will make you hate Mamdani, but Trump actually likes him!
Trump told reporters, "We agree on a lot more than I would have thought," adding, "If he could be a spectacular success, I'd be very happy. I'll be cheering for him."
On feeling comfortable in the city: When asked if he would feel comfortable living in NYC with Mamdani in office, Trump replied: "Yes, I would, I really would, especially after the meeting. Absolutely."
On a potential collaboration: "The better he does, the happier I am. I want him to do a great job, and we'll help him do a great job."
As a conservative this threw me for a loop, but apparently Trump sees something in him. He respects him as a leader as sees potential in him. They apparently had a very good conversation and agreed on a lot of things.

Itās been a whole 5 months and he hasnāt fixed all of the problems from the previous administration. He hasnāt delivered on all of his campaign promises yet either. /s
Government, by design, moves slowly. He and his team need time to figure out how things work before they can push for meaningful changes. They can only focus on a few priority items at a time as well. If they go too fast or do too much at once, they risk breaking things, burning up their political capital, implement something very poorly.
People hate him because they have been trained to hate democratic socialists.
His goal is to create a better New York for all New Yorkers. This does mean that more money will be directed to communities and programs that have been neglected, donāt really have a voice, and need it most.
It sucks for the really rich people (those that earn more than 1 million per year) because they will eventually have to have to pay more in taxes, so they are being vocal about it.
This policy shift will help the middle class as well, but most wonāt see it that way. Instead, all theyāll see is more handouts to lazy poor people paid for by everyone else.
Generally, being poor is extremely expensive, so once you are poor, itās very hard to not be poor.
If youāre curious, try to put together a 1 month budget with a part time, minimum wage salary with no employee benefits. Or find a YouTube video that has already done this for you.
Better programs for the poor -> better opportunities the poor can pursue -> more money for the poor to spend -> better chance the poor can move up to middle class -> bigger middle class -> better jobs for everyone else

His budget fix is a political move of kicking the can down the road. Actually setting up a possible bankruptcy later down the road. Look at 1970ās NYC as a template.

He closed a $12B deficit in 132 days
He literally asked for two thirds of that money from the state government š it's not an accomplishment to get your governor to bail you out at the expense of, you know, all the other cities and towns in NY. He also raised ambulance expenses and delayed pension payouts which, you know, hurt poor people the most. I'm glad he made efficiency cuts and there are some genuine gains in that area, but that's only about 10% of the deficit. Hopefully this is a stepping stone towards a real solution to the deficit, but I'm not holding my breath when the majority of his "accomplishment" is a straight up bailout.

He's fucking over teachers and schools the hardest. I know i'm biased because I am one, but it's not just our pension. He's backing out of promises to hire more teachers (we are vastly understaffed) and cut class sizes, while also turning my pension into a ponzi scheme.

Thank you for saying this. I kept scrolling down wondering if anyone was going to bother mentioning it. And it's not just about his wife being antisemitic. The so-called "protests" in Brooklyn this week were awful and he did not say one word to condemn them for harassing and assaulting Jews. NYPD had to send 400 officers to protect Jews going into their place of worship. That should not happen in America. Mandani is NOT a friend to the Jewish community.

Depends what you mean by āwithout cuttingā because he certainly decreased funding which is the logical definitionā¦
He āclosed the deficitā by taking a handout from mommy Kathy and youāre all sucking him off for it?
Also violent crime in NYC is extremely seasonal, weāll see how that stat holds up throughout the summerā¦

Getting bailed out by the state, delaying pension fund payments (for firefighters, police officers, teachers and municipal workers), delaying the hiring of needed 6,000 teachers, delaying the public school class size mandate, etc.
The budget is balanced because taxpayers in 2030 will be paying for the 2027 budget. š¤

Because itās a typical bandaid and misguided picture.
A $4B loan from the state, pension re-amortization which pushes $2.3B in costs into future years. This is called kicking the can down the road. NYC vet services faces a 13% cut as well.
Free buses - not funded
Universal childcare - started but only 2k free spots out of 12k planned.

getting a bailout via more tax money from the state isnt exactly the same as closing the defecit. I dont think most people personally hate him. Its more so we know his ideology wont work.

He hasnt closed anything yet. Thats a proposed budget for 2027 that uses some very very generous assumptions and one time cash injections.
If Trump put out an imigration forecast for 2027 today saying that he predicted zero imigration and then fox started running stories saying Trump has fixed imigration we'd all be calling them retarded.

All he did is move money from New York State to New York City and claimed he balanced the budget!
2
u/ReadyFreddy11 May 14 '26
No he did not close a 12B deficit. Youāre delusional to think thatās true. He is trying to postpone billions of pensions payments and used many other tricks that merely make bigger problems in a couple of years. Chex abandoned all of his promises that got him elected in the process. He needs to fix the roads not potholes. He fix them over and over. Will never fix anything. So typical. No one came for those snow removal jobs by the way. Violent crime is only down because of IVE removing criminals. Other initiatives preceded Mamdani. Wake up before itās too late and read some unbiased primary sources besides the based NYT

He absolutely did not clise that deficit, he shifted a bunch of costs to next year and is hoping on one time payouts to keep it afloat, and it's still "projected" at this point. How does he think next year is going to go?

Personally Iām a bit wary of the roughly billion (not a typo) dollars per year of savings he claims heās going to get from ācost containingā the cityās education spending. If a Republican said that, you know exactly what that would mean.

The $12 billion deficit fix isnt really much of a fix though? he's mainly delaying it.

He didnt tho. He got the majority from NY state bailing NYC out. The rest from thjngs like replying pension payments.
2
u/Opposite_Cold8616 May 14 '26
$8b of that 12b was direct help from New York State. Another 2.3b was from delaying city pension payments.
He didn't close the deficit, he just got the entire state to pay for it. People thinking he did anything strategic don't understand that he only kicked the can down the road.

We need to differentiate what is actual vs projections. Letās see if he can really reduce that $12b deficit. Itās like saying i cut 5k in monthly spend by not paying my landlord and not paying for my food. I can forecast all I want this savings but until it materializes itās a bunch of bullshit

He said he was going to raise property taxes. Instead the state bailed him out to the tune of, let me check, $12B dollars.
2
u/Timanitar May 14 '26
He didnt cut city service but part of that deal is cutting 2bil from pension funds & it is hardly guaranteed as police unions have already rejected it.
2
u/DoublePersonality35 May 14 '26
According to the article I read, his method of closing the deficit is to beg NY State for state taxpayer money, and also to delay paying into the pension funds for pensions that have already been promised to city employees. Not paying into pension funds might balance the budget today, but those bills will have to be paid eventually.

u/Save_The_Wicked May 14 '26
I don't hate him. But to be honest, he only closed the deficit by delaying payments into pension funds. I hope he fixes that soon, but that is not a great look imho.
Hope he works out for NYC. The best part about big movers, is you get to see how controversial policy changes work out when applied in the wild.
Example: "The Kansas Experiment": Its 2011; if we significantly lower taxes on business owners, they will hire more people and get the state out of the recession super fast. Result: Turns out business owners just held onto the cash and waited thing out. Causing Kansas's recovery to take significantly longer other nearby states. While also reducing educational outcomes since the revenue to run the state had to come from somewhere.

His skin color, his religious upbringing, his party, his city, and his (according to right wing media) left leaning policy beliefs.
2
u/KitchenSad9385 May 14 '26
Mamdani proposes policies that enact taxes on the wealthy instead of coddling those with the most financial resources.
They SAY that they hate this because it is unfair and a slippery slope to total communism where no one is allowed to own anything.
They REALLY hate the reasonable, measured policies that he enacts because they will solve real problems with financing government programs while NOT manifesting the apocalyptic scenarios monied interests use to gin up panic and keep the working poor desperate and compliant.
2
u/Thunder_Tinker May 14 '26

Donāt get that piece wrong, you look like a Trump dick sick just with him when you communicate this way.

The state bailed NYC out to the tune of 8 billion dollars over 2 years. Mandani didn't perform a miracle, he didn't increase revenue nor did he cut services. He kicked the can down the road.

Most of the hate is fabricated/in bad faith, but the budget is getting overblown by his supporters. NYC, like most municipalities, is required to have a balanced budget; the $12b deficit isnāt the actual deficit run by his predecessor but the gap between already-planned appropriations and revenue. $12b was historically large, but most NYC mayors inherit and āsolveā a budget gap.
I also donāt think his methods notably praiseworthy. He didnāt eliminate social programs but he did reduce funding for them, a third of the money came from the state, and the pension restructuring seems shortsighted. Heās also leaving a substantial budget gap for his successor; he didnāt solve the deficit as much as push it down the road. In fairness, actually solving it in the long term was probably impossible without severe spending cuts; I donāt think less of his fiscal policy than any other recent mayor, but I equally think the magnitude of the praise Iāve seen recently lacks context.
