The way I like to play Drones is very early Free Market, their drones reduction makes this quite easy even on Thinker/Transcend difficulties, furthermore they can rushbuy rec commons cheaply thanks to the industry bonus.

Thanks to early FM your research penalty doesn't really matter, especially combined with the absurd ease with which the Drones can build infrastructure like Network Nodes and Research Hospitals, you aren't going to out-research Zakharov or Aki, but you can still achieve a very respectable research pace easily rivalling any faction which isn't specialized for research.

Later in the game, I tend to run Demo/FM/Knowledge (with brief forays into Planned for Pop-booming, and maybe Wealth for rounds of infrastructure builds, but Knowledge is usually better).

The Drones can often end up "running out of stuff to build" because they build so fast relative to their research pace, you have to watch out for support costs in the early game: when playing Drones, I tend to build more expensive units, like often I just go ahead and make synthmetal defenders even very early rather than scout patrols, it's cheap enough for the Drones to do, and provides additional security against nonsense. Also you can spam out armored infantry probe teams, as they don't require support, you can basically make an armored probe wall to keep out enemy units while paying no support for it.

As you can't run Green you should aggressively raise your clean mineral limit, in Thinker mod that just means just building Tree Farms etc for the +1 clean mineral limit. If not using Thinker mod, force a pop before building Tree Farms otherwise they don't raise the clean mineral limit.

If you have to deal with natives, the solution for the Drones is artillery and self-destruct, both of which ignore psi combat. SAM Artillery of at least missile level (preferably fusion laser) will really shred locusts of chiron. Self-destruct of a unit like 10-1-1*2 will completely erase all adjacent natives including locusts. You can also use missiles against native units of other factions though it's overkill vs wild natives.

If you run Free Market permanently, which I usually do (besides forays into Planned), you need to deal with pacifism drones, one option is just building a few Punishment Spheres to house your airforce, ideally in captured enemy bases. As it's SMACX you can also build Brood Pits for +2 police and the AV for +1 police, if you combine both you no longer have pacifism drones, though even just the AV is pretty helpful by halving pacifism drones, makes it more manageable with psych spending. You can also use pure specialists bases supplied by crawlers to house your airforce.

Cheers bit different to my normal plays.

Just to clarify for others, the Drones' main strength with FM is naturally compensating for not being able to run Police. Their ability can't remove Pacifism drones, and neither can any facilities for that matter, so they still have to be just as careful when running offensive wars.

and neither can any facilities for that matter,

* early facilities.

Punishment spheres and brood pits help with or eliminate pacifism drones.

Often in the early game when I'm running FM, I'll dip into Police State if I need to do a serious offensive, as Police+FM gives you a buttload of free support to work with and you may well still have stronger research than any combination without Free Market plus more ability to rushbuy. The Police+FM combination doesn't entirely eliminate pacifism drones, but getting one unit out of territory "for free" helps a lot with making them not really a problem.

This is more of a thinker/transcend strategy, because on lower difficulties you can take greater advantage of growth bonuses from demo/planned, but on transcend growing mostly just causes more drone problems until you can bring pretty serious infrastructure to bear, while free support is awesome for small bases.

Absolutely, although I think I remember something about the Brood Pit's +Police being bugged in vanilla? But that might have been the +Lifecycle bonus now that I think of it. In any case I can't imagine many people are playing vanilla, especially since the Great Compatibility Break of 2024.

That's a great point re: Thinker/Transcend, too. I sometimes wonder why Police State seems underappreciated (I'll take "Sentences I don't want taken out of context" for 400, Alex) but I guess it's easy to forget just how lacklustre it can be on low difficulties.

Brood Pit lifecycle bonus was definitely bugged in the original game and that was probably what you were thinking about. It was also one of the bugs that took a really long time to get properly fixed as it required a full rewrite of base_production which was the last major missing piece in reimplementing all of the base upkeep mechanics.

but I guess it's easy to forget just how lacklustre it can be on low difficulties.

It's also because new players generally don't spam bases, unless maybe they're playing as Yang. Everything about police state (whether or not combined with FM) favors base spam.

Police state is of course, not good. It's very much a niche SE useful in the early game before efficiency penalties matter much, and before you have tools to mitigate support costs (crawlers, mineral restrictions lifting, genejacks, clean reactors), police state is bad enough there's a good chance I won't research Doctrine:Loyalty, but if I get it via trade (probably from Yang) or the whims of Blind Research I'll often run it. If it's politically expedient to buddy up with Yang I might run it a lot longer.

Yeah Doctrine Loyalty really is just so far out of the way, it's not worth it unless you can get it in a trade. Even with Blind Research I usually have things titled to make it unlikely (if I'm not Impact Rushing I don't care about Conquer at all early game). At least, like you mentioned, Yang is usually nice enough to trade it early on. Everyone is just so chill those first few years of planetfall. It's almost cozy, in a way. A nice memory to hang on to once your capability is high enough that literally everyone is declaring war on you.

Democracy/Planned/Wealth for fast population growth and 60% mineral costs. Each Industry rating bonus is stronger than the one before it, so stack 'em up! I build lots of colony pods, and keep ample room between bases so they can take full advantage of all the facilities they can rapidly build.

As in most 4X games, production is king. Being able to quickly build colony pods, formers, military units, and laboratories makes them versatile and pretty good at things for which they don't have direct bonuses.

Just be mindful of your safe mineral limit as you can't switch to Green to mitigate eco-damage.

Hmm haven't used wealth for a bit.

Thanks for tge advice. Im running planned. Wealth, democratic.

Depends on your map, but drones are probably one of the strongest factions out there.

Key early game is getting bases out, getting the starting triple (HGP, WP, ME), and just start making a beeline for industrial automation. Probe the shit out of neighbours if you have any, and make a super city harvesting the seas with hundreds of crawlers each getting 6 energy back.
