Mod message regarding bans

Hi all,

I thought I’d make this post to clarify my removal and banning system.

If a new account with little karma makes an inflammatory comment, I’ll immediately remove the comment and ban the account. This is because it’s common for trolls to just make accounts for the sake of trolling. New/low karma accounts are also automatically flagged by Reddit’s reputation filter, due to the influx of bot accounts, so, if your account fits this specification, your post will have to be approved by me first. Please know that I only ever remove these posts if they’re not in line with the rules.

If an established account (which is more unlikely to be a bot) makes an inflammatory comment, I use a three-strike system. So, if a user breaks the rules three times, they’ll be banned (with a bit of leeway depending on the broken rules).

This is to keep genuine users safe. Please comment or message me (u/radicalplacement) or the mod team directly if you have any questions or suggestions. Subreddits are for the users, not the mods.

Advice for others "i cAn'T aFfOrD aLt fAsHiOn"? yes you can, here's advice from a broke student

Edit: I linked more general advice at the end from people with different lived experiences.

First of all: alt fashion shouldn't be a costume. Yes I've bought pieces that "looked alt" before, but if you only look for that, you're not using your own brain a lot, which kind of defeats the purpose of being alt in the first place. It's about how you combine pieces and accessorize them that usually makes an outfit look good. If your top is cool but you don't put in any thought into styling because it "already looks alt", you'll just look like a poser, which honestly, at this point, you are. Make your outfits your own instead. Try new things just because you feel like it.

I get the urge to buy cheap. Even my examples show some stuff I got from Amazon when I was 17. But I've found that the pieces on there are rarely unique enough to not be found elsewhere. Haven't shopped there since.

Now that's out of the way, here's how I find my stuff:

old stuff

You never know what you find in your own or someone else's closet. Like I said, pieces that "don't look alt" can look amazing if you know what to do with them. Be creative.

(online) thrifting

I mostly thrift online, as you can see from all my Vinted stuff. (Disclaimer: This is not an ad. It doesn't need to be Vinted specifically, I just use it to find sellers and buy off-platform, since it is the most popular place for that where I live.) I either look for specific pieces (like a lacy black kimono or a maxi skirt) or just look at what people uploaded in my city. I set the price range to something I'm comfortable with (usually 5€ max when scrolling casually, adjusting depending on what I'm looking for).

Unfortunately, thrifting has a problem with people uploading or donating their fast fashion crap everywhere, but it still beats buying that shit straight from the source yourself.

DIY

Here's where you can combine the previous two sources to make something cool. I stole my mom's sewing machine a few years ago, maybe you can gain access to one as well. Generally, not only in alt fashion, it's good to know a few basic hand-stitches to mend something or attach hardware (e.g. chains). It doesn't need to be perfect, just learn a few basic techniques and you're good to go. Mostly learning by doing. You will fuck up sometimes, but that's part of the process.

A few affordable basics I think look good on most people:

- DIY mesh top from cut up tights (hole for your head in the crotch, cut open the toe seam and add thumb holes or whatever)

- DIY fingerless gloves from stockings or tights (I have fishnet ones)

- thrifted harnesses or belts

- DIY studded stuff

I hope this can help some newbies. If this is too much effort for you and you still want to buy from brands that are terrible for the planet and our society, you're simply not alt. It's not about what you dress like, it's about how you do it.

Advice I had to shave my head!

The blue is a stain on my mirror!

So I made the impulse decision to shave my whole head after the seriously messed me up shaving it for emergency brain surgery 🙃 it looked awful! Im feel better and want to get back into actually getting dressed up but idk if I should wear wigs, I feel like I have to go ultra fem to even out the bald head but its not really my style like in the picture, idk if it makes sense but my hair always felt like part of my alt look.

Any tips on getting that look back while having no hair? Or do I just go with a wig until it grows?

Examples of my before looks if you swipe

Helloooo peeps! 23F any pronouns

1st pic is what I currently have going on, as I am typing this

2nd pic is from Jack Stauber's Baby Hotline music video, on YouTube

3rd pic is my latest personal Blender3D project

The fictional characters included, I understand their cartoonish proportions, but something must be done to obtain these vibes. I've tried chunkyyy mascara, fake lashes, more fake lashes with eyeliner. Dark eyeshadow too (keep in mind that I have hooded eyelids). But I can't reach the summit with my efforts.

Heeeeeeeelp :D

Tips/inspo for angrogynous alt outfits

Upvotes

Does anyone have tips and inspo pics for androgynous alternative outfits? I am an afab non-binary person and a lot of androgyny in alternative styles is achieved by using more feminine stuff like make up and skirts and that would just read as feminine on me which I don't really want. So honestly any advice would be appreciated <3.

Advice Should I dye my hair black/white or black with white highlights/tips or vice versa.

Sorry if the wording is weird lol but I was wondering what to do or even if I should dye it, feel free to give me recc if you think I should do other colors. (I am mainly goth in my favorite outfits and am thrifting for more clothes to do such.) I am going to post other photos of me, the style I am trying to go for with the clothes I am going to buy, and then the hair I want to do, I am going to probably get a septum, vertical labret and eyebrow possibly a tongue piercing. (Also my ears, helix and lower helix as well as lobe it’d be like a chain sorta deal.)

Advice How would you dress to see a band from the 2000s?

Hi, I’m new to this subreddit and kinda coming in a pinch.

Basically in short: I’m going to see a “divorce dad rock” band this Friday with my dad and I’m in serious need of some ideas on what to wear. I typically dress in a more 80s thrash metalhead style, but considering it will be in the 90s and kinda rainy that day I sorta don’t want to sweat myself to death in a leather jacket AND battle vest? So I come here to ask… what would you wear in a more alternative 2000s way, OR how would you style an outfit for this type of concert? Photo references would genuinely help a lot more since I’m really bad at mentally visualizing things, but base descriptions as also welcome!

And for reference: I’m 21, a chick(however I will say I’m fine looking masc, fem or androgynous. I really don’t care.) and am 5 foot even- so all I pretty please ask is nothing with those shorts/jeans you see like most Nu-Metal fans wear. I’ve tried, and i genuinely just look really weird:(

Alt/emo hair recommendations!

I'm going to get my hair redone soon and I would LOVE some suggestions for what to do! I have looked for a while at a bunch of different ones, but I don't know if they'd look good on me or if I can even do it. Nothing too crazy because of restrictions but I'd love some input! Here are some I found that I loved, the last one is my hair currently (mid to long length, I'd say fine-ish strands).
Thanks!

Advice How to dress alt when you live with strict parent

I live in an unsafe home, so having a conversation with my parent isn’t really an option.

Right now, I’m generally limited to black pants and shirts.

I’ve managed to upcycle some T-shirts to show off my shoulders, but even wearing simple shorts are considered unacceptable.

Because of these restrictions, a lot of typical alternative-fashion styles aren’t realistic for me to wear right now.

I’m looking for easy ways to make my basic clothes more interesting without drawing attention at home.
I often dress very basic and feel awful because I don’t feel like I’m being true to myself, which has been affecting my confidence.

I could wear a long black skirt with a basic shirt and then add accessories once I’m outside, but it still feels like my options are limited.

At the moment, I don’t own any platform shoes. I only have black sneakers. Since I rely on public transportation and don’t own a car changing in public isnt always realistic.

I’d love some unconventional tips and tricks for creating alternative outfits under these restrictions.

My ideal fashion style leans more into goth.

Advice Any help on styling or diy’ing this up a bit?

Recently thrifted this racing jumpsuit and thought it might be a fun project for going beyond my usual grunge/punk style, but other than adding patches and doing an acid wash I’m pretty stuck. Any ideas or help on what I could add or mix this with to make it a neat show fit or if I’m feeling extra any random day would be super appreciated! :)

Styling Tips How to make a bodycon dress more "alt"?

I got a few bodycon dresses which fit perfectly but after a few years they are boring. I want to spice them up but don't know how except with belts and chains at the hips and waist.

Do you have inspiration for me? Or examples? Pictures are also welcome!

Masc alt fashion for the workplace?

Hey all!

I'm a very alt looking person, tones of piercings and black/silver jewellery, and used to have a coloured mohawk (rip I fried the shit out of it and had to say goodbye)

I work in a customer facing retail warehouse and want to start expressing my alt fashion more at work. Outside of work I wear my battle jacket and patch cap everywhere, but feel like this flair is missing from my everyday work outfit.

My work has a compulsory t-shirt uniform so can't do much about that but I want some cool pants that are still me without being just plain ol jeans.

Due to my work, I don't think it would be possible to wear like Tripp NYC pants because of all the hanging/dangling bits, and I feel like my patch pants are a bit too political for the workplace.

Anyone have any ideas on what other types of pants I could wear? I love to DIY my wardrobe so even just styling/accessories to add would be helpful, I just feel like a piece of me is missing without my colourful hair lol :/
