[Help!] Useful Amiga Links Directory

For quite a long time now I've been curating a directory of useful links to Amiga content. Somewhat as a FAQ, somewhat to help quickly give people info when they ask about things. So I've enabled the wiki on this subreddit to make it a bit more accessible

Amiga Directory

If you think there is anything missing or would be useful to add please do say and I'll get it added

Yellow Screen - A500+

I am a new Amiga owner (never had one before) and picked up an A500+ today and found that it boots to a yellow screen, and restarts itself every now and then. Some quick Googling leads me to believe it could be the PSU, the trapdoor RAM or battery leak damage.

Unplugging the RAM didn't change anything, so I opened it up and discovered the area around the battery doesn't look great. Could this be the issue? Is this salvageable? Thanks for looking

Repairing Amiga CD32

Doing some recapping. But have to ask what are the squares? As I wonder if they are the cause they look iffy.

Any ideas what they are if they can be the cause of loss of video input?

If they could be where can I buy replacements?

Varta Varta Varta!

Working on an Amiga 1000, it had a Rejuvenator Board with a old leaking Varta. It had leaked some down on the A1000 motherboard but surprisingly didn't do any damage.

The Reguvenator board has some damage and that damage was very close to the 1MB Fat Agnus. Luckily Agnus' IC socket was spared.

So far I've tried to neutralize the battery leakage with vinegar. Some of the battery damage is under the pcb protective coating. I'm going to have to remove some of that and neutralize it again.

The Real Time Clock IC had been removed long ago .. so there must have been an issue with the RTC. Possibly the battery had stopped working and nobody noticed?

Any tips?

Need a cable extender for my 1010 external floppy drive.

The way my desk is laid out, I do not have enough room to connect my new Amiga 1010 external floppy drive to my A500. I need to get a cable extension/extender, by about 2 to 3 feet.

Would something like THIS work?

Or are there better options that you can point me to? This cable looks a bit pricey, specially because it is coming overseas. Are there US local options for cheaper?

[Amiga][early 90s] Butterfly catching game

Upvotes

Hi,

in my mind I have a glimpse of this game, some kind of 2D platform like Pang, but you have to catch butterflies. Do you remember something like this?

Thank you in advance!

Clamiga 0.8 released

There are quite a few improvements:

  • pushed some library implementations for atomics, trivial-garbage, trivial-gray-steams, closer-mop, float-features and many more. Be aware that upstream PRs may be slow to be dealt with.

  • a dedicated FPU binary

  • saving/loading heap image support

  • REPL debugger/inspector conformance issue fixes

  • AmigaOS and MorphOS API bindings, including MUI, see screenshots: https://github.com/mdbergmann/cl-amiga#screenshots

2) IMAGINE
I'm just building a webpage inside my website in honour of this great softwares and great Amiga computers, juts for fun, but I'd like to have some serious stuff from 90s, if you have any photos of this software or the world of Amiga and RayTracing please send me in my inbox

Confused about OS versions

Hi all, new Amiga user here. I've got a nice A600 (I know I know) with a 20GB HD that I'm upgrading with a PiStorm 600 and FrameThrower. The Amiga still has a 2.05 Kickstart (37.300) that I'm upgrading to 3.2.3. I've played around with it some, but since back in the day I passed from ZX Spectrum directly on to 286s, I miss a lot of the story and a lot of the vocabulary around the Amiga.

My goal at the moment is mostly playing classic games (or that's what I originally got the Amiga for), but the rabbit hole to do more is very tempting.

At the moment I'm trying to decide which OS / GUI to go for. "Classic" Workbench 3.1? 3.2.3? Directly to CaffeineOS? Or even multiboot? What would be your suggestion?

Anyone know if a "current gen" Amiga will ever be released, and whether its parent company will ever consider wanting to have the machine be associated with its own proprietary ecosystem again? I would love to see a machine come out for around £300 or less and which has its own exclusive games...

Amiga 500 Buzzing noise

Ever since I got an Amiga 500 (board rev 6a) years ago it always had an annoying audible hum that changes in tone with the video output. So far I have tried three different RGB/RCA to scart cables on my HD TV.

The first one had a fake DB23 (sawed DB25) connector and inside its housing a tiny PCB with 75, 330 and 1k Ohm resistors and i don't know why the video ground wires were soldered to the audio signal wires.

The second one had a real DB23, the same resistors and 3 220uf capacitors inside the scart housing. It was a so called cable with "blocked RGB DC offset".

The third one I wired myself according to the image. I didn't add the optional composite video connector though.

I still get the hum. I previously found the electrolytic capacitors inside the Amiga suspicious. I didn't swap them so far though.

Finnish narration but translate works, Finnish Amiga Users Group upload.

It's the first hands on video of The A1200 that i've seen, brief but shows us most of the ports etc.

Very interesting machine, and not for least for the Workbench 3.1 that is included

Were these Amiga screenshots?

Sure, games today get pushed and pulled all the way through development and can change quite drastically, but due to my brain being what it is, I remember being a bit.... meh, over the fact that Robocop 2 was purely side-on and didn't have the same perspective as say, Midnight Resistance. Look at the floor in the screenshot. As with Beverly Hills Cop, I had it on the ol' CPC464, it was a bit er, bobbins shall we say? The top screenshot really excited me, so when I got it on the Amiga, you can imagine I felt a bit let down again.

Were these Amiga? Yes, I need to get out more, and I've been carrying this pressing issue for 30+ years.

NTSC amiga virgin question

I’ve always admired the Amiga from afar, and thought it’d be nice to put my MiSTerFPGA into service running AmigaVision for a while.

I use CRTs wherever possible with old hardware, but all the 15khz sets I have are NTSC only. I can use the forced scandoubler on MiSTer to do 50hz on a VGA monitor but the flicker is headache inducing. (It’s my understanding the flicker is much worse on vga monitors than actual PAL tvs.)

Are the NTSC versions/hacks of software going to be good enough that I won’t have any issues enjoying them? I can immediately tell when a Megadrive game was a hasty “just run it faster” PAL->NTSC conversion (Gods and Chaos Engine/Soldiers of Fortune come to mind.)

I intend on trying out ProTracker and its ilk, but it looks like most of that was programmed to not rely on video for timing after the first few years so it should be fine.

And on the topic of CRTs, if I do end up going with an NTSC set will composite be good enough? I don’t have anything RGB capable (and my svideo set is way too big to use at a desk as a monitor)
