Yuu not even bothering to take off that yakisoba hat lol.

"this is fine"

61

u/BosuW 14d ago

Yuu is genuinely so Zen about everything

I aspire to one day reach her level of “No fucks given” chill.

such a fun character with good vibes. seems like she just wants to hang with friends, check out the tourney, and explore tokyo. need more of those types of people in my life :)

7

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 13d ago

I'm half expecting her to pull a Terriermon and flat out say "Moumantai~" at any second now.

67

u/Raymond49090 14d ago

She has become one with the yakisoba

79

u/Roskal 14d ago

She's not the type to get stressed by that.

35

u/alpackabackapacka 14d ago

I loved you know who’s response like, I thought you were a YouTuber wearing it as a hat and instinctively ignored you, real girl real

16

u/CommunistPuppy 14d ago

One of the many reasons why she's my best girl of the show

14

u/MammonOftheMist https://myanimelist.net/profile/lordyuk1 14d ago

it adds +10 comic relief and +5 cuteness xD

13

u/eightcheesepizza 14d ago

I just ate some instant yakisoba for lunch, in Dogbath's Yuu's honor.

12

u/testthrowawayzz 14d ago

The yakisoba's so sticky that it doesn't fall off

6

u/ptd163 14d ago

That cracked me up too.

Everyone in the story is so intense and gay. Evil brat? Also gay, but divorced. Pro gamer dudes? I'm pretty sure they're gay too.

After that fight out at the lunch tables I'm starting to accept that Mio's description of her fight with her mother may have been completely accurate.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Aya and Mio do against the pros.

128

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 14d ago

Intense and gay is a great way to describe this series. We had drunk and gay last season.

I predict that Aya loses but Mio wins, letting them face up against each other in the losers bracket.

50

u/TheBusStop12 14d ago

We also have scared and gay this season (I'll love you till your Dying Day). And last year we had depressed and gay (This Monster Wants to Eat Me)

Can't wait to see what kind of gay we'll get next season

37

u/Elifia 14d ago

I'm not sure if we're getting any gay stuff next season, but don't forget about all the other gay stuff this season! In the circus and gay, in a girl band and gay, drawing manga and gay, mermaid and gay (or at least bi), a ghost in the shell and gay (at least for the one scene), and even a maid and gay (sometimes).

27

u/Fuzzy-Measurement467 14d ago

Praying mermaid and gay isn’t bait at this point

28

u/Elifia 14d ago

Same. Unfortunately you never know with anime originals. Even with anime as obviously and explicitly gay as Birdie Wing or Jellyfish they still managed to turn it into bait at the end. The corpos even tried using a PR statement to retcon Gundam: Witch from Mercury into being bait after the anime already finished and clearly was not bait.

23

u/Fuzzy-Measurement467 14d ago

Yeah the WfM things was frustrating, they did the same thing with Cosmic Princess Kaguya last year as well, that’s shits so gay and they retrospectively acted like it wasn’t the intention. I don’t get why the creators are so scared to lean into the Yuri.

22

u/SadDoctor 14d ago

There's still kinda the attitude that a bit of yuri teasing and subtext is fine, but you can't make it explicit unless the story is specifically in the yuri genre.

Basically gay stuff is fine, but all gay stuff must be clearly labeled and marketed as gay stuff, so no poor homophobe is accidentally exposed to the gay when they thought they were just getting Intense Female Friendship.

12

u/BosuW 14d ago

You're forgetting in steampunk Meiji and gay (and there's a girl band too as a treat)

8

u/TheBusStop12 14d ago

I caught up with that one recently and forgot about that development with the friends

Of course, how can heated rivalry & drama be engaging without being fruity with each other?

Lesser Devil is actually projecting because Aya & Mio remind Arisa of her doomed friendship with Miyu.

29

u/TheBusStop12 14d ago

Miyu and Arisa even look like Aya and Mio and have a similar relationship dynamic, so it's not hard for her to draw the parallels.

If, god forbid, Aya were to ever dump Mio I can also see her turning into a toxic little shit tryharding in online play and being a right bitch on coms

4

u/shapular https://myanimelist.net/profile/snapular 12d ago

Good thing most fighting games don't have voice chat.

I mean, that is how we first saw her with the White Lily mask off.

33

u/rice_not_wheat 14d ago

I haven't seen evidence of the older sister being gay, but I'm sure that will come out soon.

21

Oh boy here comes Reiwa Yuri with the incest subplot again!

Everyone in the story is so intense and gay. Evil brat? Also gay, but divorced. Pro gamer dudes? I'm pretty sure they're gay too.

We've finally entered fighting game BL and shown how even yuri can be broken up over fighting games. Truly capturing the LGBTQ+ experience with pro gamers.

After that fight out at the lunch tables I'm starting to accept that Mio's description of her fight with her mother may have been completely accurate.

We finally see the fruit of Mio's battle with her mother and all that training. She's not a scrub when it comes to a physical brawl.

18

u/ILikeFPS 14d ago

I mean the fighting game scene does have a large amount of LGBTQIA+ so it makes sense

16

u/wutfacer 14d ago

You can just say furries

12

u/runevault 14d ago

Nah gay and trans people are there too. Ricki Ortiz has been an FGC pillar for... a really long time for example.

11

u/XaevSpace 14d ago

also just the guilty gear playerbase has a pretty strong showing of LGBTQIA+

10

u/Rabbitey- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rabbitey 14d ago edited 14d ago

Storylines make esports fun to watch. Give me all the gay rivalries.

Mio also ain't fazed by Arisa. She already has reps from fighting the demon that is her mom.

6

u/ptd163 14d ago

Everyone in the story is so intense and gay.

That's such a good way to describe the series lol.

After that fight out at the lunch tables I'm starting to accept that Mio's description of her fight with her mother may have been completely accurate.

I was giving Mio at least the benefit of the doubt that she was being accurate, but now that we've met a second Satsui No Hado practitioner I think that basically confirms it for me.

3

u/TorinKerr802 14d ago

I always thought Mio was being literal. It made me happy that her mom is so crazy

Today we meet the first 100% ethically sourced fighting game ojou-sama, playing through arcades as the forefathers intended instead of breaking school rules!

48

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 14d ago edited 13d ago

Playing late night fighting games with your 3 closest dormitory friends in a makeshift bunkbed tent creates a greenhouse effect, trapping and recirculating the yuri gamer energy which accelerates gamer growth. It may not be traditional, but you can't argue with results.

53

u/Frontier246 14d ago

And she also doesn't break character as an ojou-sama even when she's inflicting the most hardcore gamer fear into her little sister.

106

u/WhoiusBarrel 14d ago

You stopped me from awakening my Satsui no Hado.

This plus the 90s LN nicknames they used had me cackling, the vibes from this episode really jumped from Delinquent Anime to Battle Shounen with all that aura/stands being unleashed.

57

u/Crackedaru 14d ago

Those girls almost be changing genres from playing fighting games to actually being a battle Yuri.

37

u/Frontier246 14d ago

In a Street Fighter anime, they have truly become street fighters.

29

u/BosuW 14d ago

Don't be ridiculous. After all, young ladies don't play fighting games.

I realized last week this series had jumped into being a sports anime just with the gay subtext made more explicit, and this week did absolutely nothing to change my mind on that front. That is not a complaint, I love sports anime, just was a hilarious realization

28

u/Frontier246 14d ago

This plus the 90s LN nicknames they used had me cackling,

Aya: "I've read every volume of Slayers!"

21

u/dienomighte 14d ago

Aya starts to lose in a match only to begin chanting "darkness beyond twilight, crimson beyond blood that flows"

108

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 14d ago

It was hilarious Yuu just kept the yakisoba plate as a hat the whole time drama was erupting around her.

She probably wouldn't have cleaned it off at all if she wasn't told to do so.

59

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

She should have gone into her next match with it on her head...player would probably get so distracted she could easily beat him.

15

u/BosuW 14d ago

Honestly sound strategy. People would be wondering if it's real, then getting even more flabbergasted when they realize it is.

7

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 13d ago

Don't forget the smell.

6

"When life hands you yakisoba hats, make personal branding for your future YouTube channel."

56

u/Frontier246 14d ago

At this point I think Yuu will literally roll with anything. Fighting games, food as a fashion statement, gay sex...

23

u/alpackabackapacka 14d ago

Yeah, yeah, yeah?

7

u/Tiramin 14d ago

I have a Kirigiri figure with cup noddles as a hat, now I want Yuu figure with yakisoba as a hat to match.

The vice-chair? How high up does this 'fighting game' conspiracy go? This series's title is a complete lie.

Hana's quite the terrifying woman to be able to frighten the hell out of Tamaki. Did her moniker 'Bloody Macaron' reflect the real world as well?

Arisa might've been a complete brat but still couldn't help but feel bad at the tragic end to her 'love life'. Saying 'ILY' to Miyu only for their relationship to end with an 'I hate you' some time down the road.

58

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 14d ago

I bet her love interest got mad because of her annoying play style

u/WiqidBritt 14d ago

6

u/Shadowrun29 13d ago

She's so small, she don't need to crouch to do a flash kick.

13

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 13d ago

The mind of a Guile player is an enigma.

"Do I Flash Kick now or do I Flash Kick tomorrow? I mean I only have two moves, so..."

24

u/ILikeFPS 14d ago

That's almost definitely what happened lol

8

u/firefaiz6 13d ago

That definitely seems like the implcication based on how it happened when playing SF4. And I mean, can you even blame Miyu when your only gaming friend defaults to Turtle Guile?

50

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 14d ago

The vice-chair? How high up does this 'fighting game' conspiracy go? This series's title is a complete lie.

At this point, I am convinced that the entire dorm is "secretly" playing fighting games at night, except for Aya's roommate who doesn't have time because of all the yuri fanfic she writes.

11

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 14d ago

Alice is the sister of the monitors chair apparently. Thery have the same surname.

37

u/Raymond49090 14d ago

Hmm, well the best way to get people interested in something is to ban it... Perhaps the "no video games" policy is a 4D chess reverse psychology maneuver for cultivating gay fighting gamers.

36

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

It's going to be revealed that every single girl in that dorm is a gamer, with Miyo's room-mate the sole exception

First rule of Fighting Games club...

18

u/Frontier246 14d ago

The vice-chair? How high up does this 'fighting game' conspiracy go? This series's title is a complete lie.

I think the head dorm monitor is related to Arisa but is she in on it too? Even if it doesn't seem like she's competing.

Hana's quite the terrifying woman to be able to frighten the hell out of Tamaki. Did her moniker 'Bloody Macaron' reflect the real world as well?

I'm starting to wonder if it wasn't just online play that beat Tamaki down but how she could never beat her sister.

Arisa might've been a complete brat but still couldn't help but feel bad at the tragic end to her 'love life'. Saying 'ILY' to Miyu only for their relationship to end with an 'I hate you' some time down the road.

Tragic elementary school yuri.

12

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 14d ago

Clearly the president of the school is probably the champion and only considera those who dare to rage against the rules worthy 😂

2

u/TheBusStop12 14d ago

I'm just waiting for the principal to show up in the finals

3

u/ptd163 14d ago

The vice-chair? How high up does this 'fighting game' conspiracy go? This series's title is a complete lie.

I mean Arisa is the younger sister of the chair. It probably goes all the way to the top and there's. At least in terms of students. The adults probably aren't involved. There's probably more girls that play fighting games that we just don't see. Aya's roommate is probably closer to the exception than she is the rule.

3

u/Verzwei 13d ago

The vice-chair? How high up does this 'fighting game' conspiracy go? This series's title is a complete lie.

Y'know how in a lot of yuri series, almost everyone is gay and nobody questions it beyond maybe an initial "but I'm a girl" cliché? Like they take place in some kind of yuritopia and any girl in the cast is going to be a gay love interest, a gay romantic foil, or a gay romantic rival to one or more of the characters.

I've just accepted that this is like that, but for Street Fighter. This series is set in Street Fightertopia, and everyone in this universe plays Street Fighter.

... so turns out Mio had taken karate more seriously than I thought with moves like those. It was just her mom being the final boss that made her look weaker.

72

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 14d ago

I saw nobody point that out in the episode discussion, but Mio was actually convinced she could have blocked that murder kick from mama, till she noticed her hand was already messed up

33

u/Raymond49090 14d ago edited 14d ago

I noticed it too, but I assumed it was teenage bravado. But seems like she could actually back it up (if her mom wasn't a Demon Lord).

40

u/Frontier246 14d ago

The girls are all built different in this show. Remember Mio and Aya jumping through a window and shrugging off all the glass shards in their bodies?

11

u/ptd163 14d ago

Mio was actually convinced she could have blocked that murder kick from mama, till she noticed her hand was already messed up

That's probably why her mom went for her arm as her opener. She knows what her daughter is capable of.

36

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 14d ago

It was just her mom being the final boss that made her look weaker.

"Stand proud, Mio. You are strong."

23

u/gnome-cop 14d ago

Her mom isn’t a good point for comparison. Mio’s pretty capable, it’s just not enough against a demon that takes it as seriously as she takes fighting games.

7

u/BosuW 14d ago

Well they're implying Mio is kind of a natural genius at anything she tries, so even if she wasn't at it for long, she's still got dem moves.

8

u/Frontier246 14d ago

If she can survive a battle with her mom, she can survive fighting a petulant brat.

56

u/sprntgd 14d ago

The flashback to Gekido and Cafe playing Street Fighter 4 is based on the first round of this 2013 grand finals between Daigo and Gamerbee.

In the present day, both players are trying to hit the opponent with Chun-Li's Crouching Medium Kick, and then combo into Super Art to win the match. This is not actually possible to do on reaction to the opponent getting hit. You have to recognise that the opponent did something other than block before your attack hits, and perform the Super on reaction to that.

Gekido took advantage of this by walking far enough that he's extremely likely to get hit if the opponent presses a button. He then reads the exact moment of the opponent's attack, and stops late enough that if his opponent commits to the combo then they do not have enough time to stop themselves on reaction to seeing him block.

(At about the 2:00 mark in the same match above, Daigo uses a similar technique, except instead of blocking the opponent's attack he just Shoryukens them in the face because he's an actual lunatic)

A little later, something not explained very well is Aya's nervousness causing her to do early jumping Medium Kick. She's actually trying perform Cammy's dive kick (↓↙←K in the air), but is messing up the motion which results in kicking the sky with whatever button you pressed.

True love is reading context clues and emotionally reassuring and defending you while you're having a panic attack over your VERY intense sister.

12

u/BosuW 14d ago

What are we, some kind of street fighters?

62

u/dinliner08 14d ago

i'm sorry, i thought this is an anime about people playing Street Fighter, not people doing an actual street fighting?! also, it's amazing how the yakisoba plate manage to stay on Inui's head for six minutes straight without falling

btw, i love this random guy coming out of nowhere just to comment on Mio's amazingly executed karate technique

so, what i gather from that Gekidou vs Cafeore fight is that Gekidou's playstyle is similar to Mio where most of the time, they're playing by...instinct?

While everyone here is focused on the Yakisoba, I'm just in a awe that the girls throwing hands wasn't their imaginations. Meaning somewhere in this setting there's probably some person doing actual shonen protag shit if this is just some random teenagers with beginner Karate lessons at best.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 14d ago

I didn't really care much for Gekido and Cafeore's backstories, but I guess we need to get to know them, considering Aya is about to face Gekido and I'm guessing Mio will fight Cafeore in the losers' bracket. I think the girls are about to become famous next episode since those two have a big audience.

So the bratty kid is named Arisa, and it looks like she even has her own yuri backstory. Based on the hints in this episode, especially Arisa's violent reaction when Mio told her she'd lose friends because of her attitude, it looks like Arisa may have had a falling-out with Miyu because of SF4.

Glad to see Mio's martial arts background came in handy this episode! I didn't think we'd actually see Arisa try to throw hands with her. Thank fuck Hana-senpai showed up and calmed everyone down with her threatening aura.

Not gonna lie, I thought the V-tuber commentating was her, but I guess she's also a competitor. And it turns out, she's Tamaki's sister and the person she's trying to catch up to! I honestly didn't even notice they have the same last name!

Hana-senpai is absolutely terrifying, tho! Definitely more terrifying than that brat, Arisa. I'm guessing we'll eventually see Hana-senpai and Tamaki face off at some point. That's gonna be an intense matchup!

Yuu just wearing that yakisoba on her head was freaking hilarious tho! She wasn't lying when she said she doesn't get stressed. I would've brushed that off the moment it landed on my head but she really wore it until the end of that scene xD

39

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 14d ago

Yuu just wearing that yakisoba on her head was freaking hilarious tho!

Each subsequent scene where the yakisoba was still there just exponentially increased the hilarity of the joke.

Fighting games can bring girls together, bring guys together, break girls up, create an intense and dramatic relationship between sisters, and also just be fun to watch in all their intensity.

The fight with Mio's mom wasn't a one-off thing, Mio is a literal Street Fighter now.

I love the cute V-tuber giving on-point fighting game commentary.

I feel like Hana was going to be the true Final Boss of the tournament but it would be nice to see Tamaki actually beat her...even if she might not be able to at her current level.

3

u/Jacob-C 13d ago

I didn't really care much for Gekido and Cafeore's backstories

I actually quite like them as characters, so I thought it was fun to see how their rivalry started.

Y'all girls gonna have to learn to street fight for real to survive this show 😂

The length of time she was wearing the yakisoba hat cracked me up. Gotta admire how she was unfazed by that. It did almost start to seem like she’d worn it on purpose.

No wonder she seems to be alone, she randomly picks a fight with a group of girl enjoying themselves. If she's so confident in her abilities and their lack of, there should be no reason for her to be concerned about them being around lol.

Since Yuu does well under stress I was waiting for her speak up, but it was interesting to see even she got intimidated by Teya's sister. It was sweet to see Yuu holding Tamaki's hand.

I'm sure Mio will win her game, so what I'm looking forward to is Aya's game. I'm sure she's going to get some eyes on her since no-one knows her, but since she hasn't lost yet, story wise she could win or lose.

5

u/magnumcyclonex 14d ago

I don't think Inui was intimidated at all by the older sister. I went back and rewatched that scene. It shows the shocked black and white faces of Mio, Aya, and Tamaki, but definitely not Inui. Props to someone like Inui who can step in just like that to ward off some snake eyes (reminds me of Orochimaru from Naruto) older sister.

19

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 14d ago

That episode was so hype, I can't believe both Aya and Mio are facing the professional players so soon. Surely at least one of them wins, right? We've gotta have our Aya vs Mio match in the tournament somewhere!

Tamaki's sister is a psycho and so is the little devil. It's funny how all the girls in the tournament already know each other. Even though they are at odds with each other today, I think Mio and the little devil will become frenemies in the future. And of course she's into girls as well haha, it can't be a Yuri without every single female character also being gay. Love it.

This is such a fun series to watch, can't wait for next episode.

19

u/Frontier246 14d ago

Nothing says "Battle Anime" like the emotionally charged relationship between siblings where the older sibling doubts the youngers' capability necessitating the younger sibling to have to prove themselves in a fighting game tournament.

She just also happens to have an emotionally supportive girlfriend.

I feel like Aya narrowly loses against Gekido. She isn't in losers bracket yet, she is the one that narratively can afford to lose. But she's going to put up a good fight and impress people regardless.

Mio is absolutely winning against Café tho. She's gotten over her initial nerves, now has a strong goal of fighting Alice, and this episode literally pointed out how Mio and Gekido have similar playstyles, which we just saw Café lose to.

Then later down the line we will absolutely get Aya vs Mio in the losers bracket. Which really depends on how the bracket ends up - if Mio has already fought Alice, Aya will win. If not, Mio wins.

10

u/mekerpan 14d ago

This episode was indeed fun -- so much so, that it seemed WAY too short (for all that happened in it). Arisa DOES need friends -- I wonder just how old she is? Old enough to enter Yuri Gaming HS next year?

6

u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 14d ago

That episode was so hype, I can't believe both Aya and Mio are facing the professional players so soon.

EVO is an open tournament. You just register and show up. There is no qualification and people don't get byes based on past performance (a player might get a bye in the very first match due to tournament structure but that is it).

While players might get split up due to seeding so you don't create a "group of death" with like 7 pro players where only three of them can advance. However, if you are a nobody it is very easily possible that you face a pro player early on, or possibly in the very first match.

I guess though it is convenient storytelling to pair our nobody POV characters against the big boss pro players early on though.

3

u/Netfearr 14d ago

It will have to be Aya that loses. Definitely the most unrealistic thing for me though was that Cafe and Gekido were in the same pool there is no way tournament organizers would let that happen lol.

21

u/gnome-cop 14d ago

We’re putting Mio on obnoxious brat handling duty. The best way to handle one is with another, of course.

Geki and Cafe got looong-lasting beef.

Interesting detail that Mio’s got the same instinct for when something will work as the pros.

Kind of intrigued by the fact that it seems like something about Aya triggered Arisa’s memories. Well, we’ll put that on hold for now and deal with your issues with being rejected on the battlefield when it comes to it.

Teya-senpai and her sister is going to need to be dealt with as well. I wonder what’s the story behind why they are like this.

Good job Inui, protect your wife! (Kind of wish she would have kept the yakisoba hat for the rest of the tournament for the memes.)

I love how over the top extra this series is in all areas. “Have we used up all the imaginary fight scenes aura budget for this episode yet?”

“No, sir.”

“Then what are we waiting for?!! ADD MORE!”

“YES SIR!”

Aya's hair and bangs look a lot like Miyu's, so the passing resemblance + the obvious yuri vibes between her and Mio stirred up Arisa's lingering yuri PTSD.

This series is pretty great. It got me back into FGs. I've always played Smash Melee on and off but I haven't played Street Fighter for like 2 decades until just recently and it's been fun getting back into it tbh, and I've been playing Guilty Gear even though I only tried it a couple times before and only started actually playing it (and other FGs) recently.

I was wrong the one girl from the prior episode also getting a release form was going to Evo as well, and more than that she went for herself not just her crazy sister.

"Maybe she entered for the fun of it." Bitch she won her pool.

I found it interesting they spent as much time as they did on the match between the two pros, but both of them are playing our girls next week. Also all 4 made it out of pools and I think only Mio fell to losers, that's really damn good.

Lol, Mio v Arisa irl was great. Yu sticking up for Tamaki against Macaron was sweet, VA for Macaron sounds familiar af, can’t place her though. Villainess vibes for sure. Aya v Gekido next week let’s go.

This show just gets better and better. The reveal that Aya and Tamaki made it out on winners side already marked them as very strong players (more on that below) but the fact that Aya would need to play the winner of Gekido vs. Cafeore while Mio would likely face the loser of that match later in the tournament had great implications.

Then we get another faceoff with Alice, who I am very surprised is pretty much the main villain of the show so far, only for yet another villain to be introduced. Hana-senpai is scary and the snake motif is impressive. The nickname "Bloody Macaron" is hilarious though.

It is a bit over the top with melodrama though, because I don't think physical violence or throwing food would be condoned by tournament organizers. They are not directly in the tournament venue in that scene though, so perhaps they go lucky.

Also full props to Yuu for standing up for her friend, and doing so with Yakisoba on her head the entire time.

The heavy implication last week was that the tournament they are in is EVO Japan 2024, i.e. this one which had 4908 players.

The tournament is open so you do not have to qualify. You just have to register. Most of the tournament is played first-to-two with the top 8 first-to-three, with each game consisting of course of winning two of possible three rounds. Winn two rounds to win a game. Win two games to win a match and move on.

It is double elimination as explained last week, meaning that you can lose one match in the tournament and continue playing. Once you lose your second match you are out of the tournament. Players are called "Winners" if they have not had a loss yet and "Losers" if they have lost one match. Winners will keep playing Winners and Losers Losers, with the tournament life being on the line in the latter match (i.e. Mio is playing with her back against the wall the entire tournament). This also means that Losers have a longer road ahead if they plan to win the tournament, as there are twice as many people that remain with one loss than there are undefeated players, meaning that when a player gets their first loss, the two players who are already with one loss have to play each other to determine who plays that fresh Loser.

Round 1 is organized in pools of usually 10 players each. One person makes it out on Winners Side while two players make it out in Losers side. This means the girls are at least in the top 30% of players at the tournament, with those coming out on winners side being at least top 20%.

Rounds 2 through 4 are 24 player brackets made from players who made it out of the previous format, (8 players seeded in Winners, 16 players seeded in Losers) which leaves 2 Winners and 4 Losers each.

Then there is a final bracket with which leads to a Grand Final with the last remaining undefeated player, and the last player with only one loss. If the Loser wins, a "Grand Final Reset" happens with them playing a final match to determine the Winner of the tournament. The top 8 in EVO Japan 2024 was First-To-Three as said before, increasing the burden of victory.

10

u/runevault 14d ago

Great write up. One thing I'd add that's important, once you go down to losers the number of matches you need to win to make a deep tournament run roughly doubles from that point on. So Mio is going to have to play a lot of matches to make it to top 64 or higher.

7

u/ptd163 14d ago

AIN'T NO WAY THEY NAMED DROPPED THE SATSUI NO HADO ON ARISA OF ALL PEOPLE! She should've been an Akuma main instead of a Guile main so we could get a Shun Goku Satsu.

We got a little backstory on Cafeore and Gekido's rivalry. I have to say that that "killer gamer smile" is not the best the way to reference "Murder Face" Tokido.

I think I see at least part of the vision now. Mio's big match will be against Arisa. Aya's big match(es) will be again Gekido and/or Cafe. Tamaki's big match will be against her sister. Not sure what's happening with Yuu yet, but her just leaving the plate of food on her heat after Mio blocked with the karate she seemed to instinctually remember it cracked me up.

I hope now that they've named dropped the Satsui No Hado we get a Shun Goku Satsu at some point. Still waiting for Evo Moment 37 as well.

3

u/runevault 14d ago

Cafe looks to be in Mio's pool in losers so she's going to have to get through him to face Arisa.

7

u/RobrechtvE 13d ago

Arisa just casually popping in a flashback to remind us all that this is a yuri anime in addition to a fighting game anime.

6

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

Bro is this a world where if you aren't a pro at fighting games you get treated as second class citizen? The brat lost her friend because she was simply way too good and kept beating her mercilessly(and the friend didnt take it well, i get being frustrated but if you see you got no chance just stop torturing yourself). and wtf is with the Big Sis? Dear god i got creeps....

Also the brat fuckin attacked a person, does she just get to leave? I guess i need to suspend my disbelief a bit more

6

u/StardustWhip 14d ago

TBH, I didn't really care much for the Pro Gamers' backstory. But I guess it is ultimately good that they got this development, since it makes them more than just big scary guys that the Fighting Game-Playing Young Ladies have to fight.

Arisa's so anti-friendship that she could probably pass for a My Little Pony villain. She's even got the tragic backstory about a broken friendship ("friendship").

Apparently Mio wasn't exaggerating about her backstory with her mom, because people just have actual Street Fighter powers in this universe. Powers that they use when they casually start fights in, or near, the streets. At this rate I'm expecting that the final episode of this series will just have an actual brawl between Mio and Mamakuma. It'll end with Mio recreating this moment.

I loved seeing Yu come to the defense of her girlfriend Tamateya during the confrontation with Teya's terrifying older sister (who is herself a Young Lady That Does Play Fighting Games). Granted, kinda hard to take it seriously with the yakisoba noodles for a hat, but still pretty sweet.

5

u/CBSys 14d ago

BTW for anyone who doesn't know, the fight between gekido and cafe in the flashback is a reference to daigo vs gamerbee DHW13 fight:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwveVC3r984

13

u/Ajifu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Azif 14d ago

It would have been funnier if they just got the kid thrown out of the tournament for getting violent with another player but I guess that wouldn't progress the story

3

u/ExaminationNo9186 14d ago

Come to think of it, I would rather that story arc.

Even if our Young Ladies didn't put in the complaint, everything was seen by an Event Organiser who kicks the Little Brat out for being a generalised little shit.

11

u/Atomic_Tanuki 14d ago

I think I've discovered the real reason why the Saudi bought EVO. They want to harvest Satsui no Hadō emitted regularly from the pro-gamers during a tournament and turn it into a new source of (unclean) energy.

Soft power, indeed.

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 14d ago

Look, I understand the fact that the series is about Young Ladies Who Play Street Fighter. I get it. There is no reason to point that out.

However, upon saying that, it's good to see that being at the Tournament, the entire episode is not about playing their matches.

That they are catching up for lunch and debriefing a bit, get to hang out a little bit away from the gaming floor. Which is mixed in with wanting to watch a match between their next opponent to check out their game style.

There is more to a tournament than just the game with in itself.

4

u/munchable_lunchables 14d ago

These episodes keep getting better and better however I wish we got to see Tamaki's match especially with the build up last episode where she was shook before it. Would've been a big fist pump moment to actually see her prevail than it happening offscreen.

u/shewy92 13d ago

The production value has no reason being this high lol. An anime that uses real game footage I guess has tons of monetary backing.

5

u/ohoni 11d ago

Also, they get to replace like 5-10% of their frames with game footage, which is an actual cost savings. :D

3

u/runevault 13d ago

several companies including Evo (owned by the Saudis) and Capcom are helping fund this anime, so they likely have a bigger than normal budget.

19

u/wloff 14d ago

I gotta be honest, I really don't care too much about the random wannabe bikers' backstories.

The girls being goofy goobers and doing street fighting and hand-holding, though. That's the good stuff!

17

u/eldragon_1 14d ago

I guess it’s a lot more fun when you know the people they’re based on. I was laughing my ass off when they made Tokido’s “Murder Face” into a whole bit for Gekido’s character. I love these guys lol

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 14d ago

I think this may be a thing.

I am enjoying the series well enough. Well, I must be, if I am now happily at Ep 7 and looking forward to Ep 8.

I think I would get more out of the series if I actually played the game (I have casually played here or there over the years but at the level of playing with mates over beer and pizza), or actually knew enough about everything - the pro players, the tournaments, etc. One of the other comments pointed out the main match was based on a 2013 Pro Game, I don't know enough to be able to work that out. IN a "This match is a reference to that event..." type of thing.

3

u/eldragon_1 13d ago

Oh yeah, the show stands pretty great on its own. But the FGC knowledge definitely elevates it to another level of fun.

Pretty much every named background player from the previous episode is based on a real player. Gekido is now very blatantly Tokido, who is famously known for his very intense face when playing. Even the charismatic announcer with the sunglasses is based on a real announcer called Aru, who looks and acts exactly like that, and is actually VOICING the character. It’s great.

14

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 14d ago

I'm predicting that Gekido will lose to Aya.

Gekido vs Cafeore in flashback was Ryu vs Evil Ryu, and this episode it was Chun-Li vs Chun-Li; I think Gekido likes to flex on his opponents by doing mirror matches.  (His 100 fight stream was just casual play so doesn't necessarily count.)  So, he'll match Aya's pick and go Cammy vs Cammy.

This will backfire on him, because Cammy just got nerfed.  Did Gekido read all the patch notes for all the characters?  Unlikely.  But Aya is a Cammy main so she knows every change and has been practicing hard ever since the patch.  Gekido will try to execute and learn in real time that his knowledge is outdated, and Aya will punish this.

Or she loses because reasons, but the last-minute patch seems like a Chekhov's Nerf Gun.

5

u/Frontier246 14d ago

Gekido vs Cafeore! The battle of the Chun-Li players! Whose playstyle will win out? And who will Aya play next?

Even though Aya is there to check out her next opponent, I'm glad she still had the time to tell Tamaki that she truly earned her win after all her labbing and hard work. She really needed to hear this!

Mio wins her next match! And starting to catch eyes as a "rich girl" fighting game player who REALLY gets in the zone. She's just following her instincts to their natural conclusion.

I just love the idea that one encounter in an arcade could eventually lead to a delinquent gang leader to go straight...so he could become a pro fighting game player.

They got into mutual Burnout! They go all out! They enter into the game as bikers charging at each other But Gekido managed to manipulate Cafe so he could spectacularly finish him! It's over!

Why am I not surprised Yu is the only one not feeling any kind of nerves? She's just there for a good time!

It seems like Arisa too had her own yuri experience with Miyu, who protected her from bullies. A relationship that broke up over...fighting games.

To think that we would once again see a real life Street Fighter fight play out in front of us. Mio vs Arisa! Mio parries! Yu takes collateral damage! Arisa practically goes feral at Mio! She knicks Mio's cheek! Aya is the only one who calls out how unbecoming physical violence is!!!

But then they BOTH sense a new challenger: Hana Ichinose who is not only the vice-chair dorm monitor but also TAMAKI'S SISTER and a true young lady who plays fighting games. She de-fuses the fight and sends Arisa packing, but this battle between her and Mio isn't over.

Hana rolls with the girls playing fighting games better than I expected, probably because it would be hypocritical of her otherwise, though she's surprised and VERY serious about Tamaki still playing fighting games. How much has her big sister crushing her effected Tamaki's emotions? Luckily Yu is there, even with yakisoba on her head, to hold her hand and validate Tamaki's efforts!

Aya is going to fight Gekido but is Mio going to fight Cafe?

7

u/NekoCatSidhe 14d ago

That gay gamer girls anime is so hilariously other the top, between The Brat and Mio getting into a real life Street Fighter fight, and Yuu’s scary sister being so intense she crept out everyone, and Inui getting a plate on her head and just ignoring it during the whole scene like it happens every day. It was so dumb I could not stop laughing. 5/5 episode.

So both Aya and Mio find themselves against the two pro-gamers next ? I am curious to see how this will go.

2

u/apgp123 https://myanimelist.net/profile/apgp123 14d ago

i feel like half of the show was literally in game clips lmao

6

u/tottoro47 14d ago

It's really good animated, but it's probably a great way to save budget and use it for the non-game parts.

5

u/StardustWhip 14d ago

That's one of the reasons I warmed up to the real Street Fighter clips after the first couple episodes. Capcom sponsorship means the show gets a higher budget, and using real gameplay means they can save that budget for important stuff like the Heated Drama Between Women.

2

u/Nawinter_nights 14d ago

I was hoping for an illustration at the end that shows what their characters would be in tekken . Mio would be a jin player while aya would probably be reina . Aya would love reinas personality

2

u/TheBusStop12 14d ago edited 14d ago

Oof, bad luck in the brackets for Aya, having to face some of the strongest players on day 1. But shit happens

Something I've noticed about Mio is that she's very shy around people she doesn't know, often hiding behind Aya. But she immediately took to Aya and the gang due to their shared love of Street Fighter 6. But she's still shy around the other competitors, despite them all loving SF6 as well. I wonder if she's also just generally more comfortable around girls, as her competitor this time was a dude, and thus is more likely to open up to a fellow fighting game nerd if they're a girl. She did absolutely verbally destroy that girl last episode after all

I honestly never really been interested in eSports or fighting games, but that pro battle was dope, I genuinely enjoyed everything about it
