When productive procrastination goes too far and you end up bringing Things3 and Anki together on your Mac...

TLDR: have only been using again and good for almost 6 years - updated to FSRS 2 months ago, realised when looking at my stats that my card difficulty was fucked, found out it was because I never use 'easy', and now think I should probably start using the easy and hard buttons. How exactly will this affect my reviews in the coming future, if at all? Will there be a particular change in quantity, time between them, etc.?

Hi! I have been using Anki to study languages since late 2020, with some periods of me using it heavier than others and some periods of breaks (not the ideal way to use it, I know. Mental health is fun haha).

When I first started using it, as many people do, I did some research to figure out the best settings and, well, how to use it. What I found told me I should use just 'again' and 'good'. Cannot for the life of me remember the reasoning the person gave, maybe just the most common reason of 'it makes things simpler'. Little disappointed in me 6 years ago for not thinking it through a bit more, but whatever! So I have been using this method all these years.

So FSRS comes along at some point. I am autistic, and one way that affects me is that I really don't like change, so I wanted to just stick with what I was doing because the idea of it updating and messing up my way of doing things scared the hell out of me lol. So I did not update for agesss. However, for burnout reasons I had to have a break earlier this year. When I finally came back to my thousands of piled reviews, I figured that would probably be a good time to update, if I really had to.

So I figure out the FSRS thing to the best of my ability, and have been using that for I think just about 2 months now. But recently I noticed one of my deck's cards seemed to be having high daily reviews frequently, so checked the stats. I don't know to what extent the high daily reviews are actually related to this, maybe not at all, but when I was there I noticed my card difficulty stats were a bit fucked lol (pictures attached of card difficulty in my main 2 current decks at the bottom). Looking it up, I found out it is because I never use the 'easy' button.

So, now knowing that, I'm thinking I should probably start using the other two magic buttons, but want to know what to expect in the relatively close future. Will there be a significant change at all? For example in the amount of daily reviews or in the amount of time between reviews?

Really sorry if these are stupid questions! As I said earlier, not massively keen on change, so I tend to overthink these things before going through with it. Also, sorry for being very wordy in this post - I'm very tired and am a big overexplainer lol.

I'm trying to add images to my cards and they aren't showing up. Is there a simple solution for this?

Really buckling down as the A&P midterm approaches. Hit 500+ a few times over the last week but today I truly ascended to 800. 1k incoming 🤧

The behaviour I want is that the new cards are reduced when I'm over the maximum reviews, such that my load trends back down.

Naively with these numbers: if on a particular day, I'm over 100 reviews, then no new cards are presented that day, but I can still clear the entire backlog of cards.

I think there's a matrix of:

- full backlog, new cards

- cut backlog, no new cards

- cut backlog, new cards (with toggle)

- full backlog, no new cards <- missing!

When I use the shake to undo feature in anki mobile app on my iPhone it does correctly undo the card visually but it also pops up the cancel and undo iOS prompt. After hitting cancel I can no longer interact with anki properly it says that the card doesn't exist even though I'm literally looking at a card

I have never managed to get the Migaku add-on to work, and lately I keep getting a message that I need to update it. I do, then I get an error message, and nothing seems to work right. This is every time I start Anki now. When I try to delete the add-on, I get the message that it can't be removed because it's being used by another process. I have closed and restarted everything, even uninstalled and reinstalled Anki. uninstalled and deleted Migaku etc etc, nothing seems to work. Any tips? I can still use Amki on my phone, but the desktop app doesn't work right anymore which means I can't add new cards.

I am aware that this will probably not be approved by many, as it may feel like a chore for people to talk about their studies, when all they want is just to ask a question or post an insight.

But I am always so curious about what people study. Ever since I discovered Anki, l am looking for creative ideas on how to utilize it better. I believe most people (including me) heavily underutilize this amazing app if they only use it to learn "normal" stuff, like languages, geography etc.

Every now and then I see somebody post something creative, how they use anki in a very specific, unconventional way, which helps them gain unique knowledge and helps them develop different kind of thinking, if that makes sense.

That is why I thought it would be a great idea to make it obligatory to put a flair to the post that will signify what OP currently studies, and then if someone gets interested, they can ask a question about it and OP can answer if they feel like it.

Sure, we can even now ask anybody what they learn, but most people learn languages and stuff. That is a great way to use Anki, but I am intrigued by unconventional use cases.

I know some people recommend to use only "Repeat" and "Easy". However, I did in the beginning and didn't find it satisfying (too much spacing).

Here's the way I use it:

• Easy: It was obvious. I knew the answer immediately without thinking much about it.
• Good: I got it right without much effort or without correcting myself, but there was at least a short "uuuh" and I may have used a mnemonic or context clues (I do vocabulary: I try to think about the context in which I discovered the word). I am confident about the answer. I didn't came with other answers before getting it right.
• Hard: I got it right, but thought about other words before settling for the right one. Or I almost felt like hitting "Repeat", but did find the correct after thinking hard about it. Or I took a guess, which ended up being correct, but wasn't confident about it and it was almost random. Sometimes, if I make a small mistake, like getting 1 letter wrong, I let it pass, but not always.
• Repeat: it is for everything I don't get right, from not remembering at all to only getting a letter wrong.

Sometimes the line between the 4 are unclear.

I consider the first 3 as nuances of "Correct" who differ in terms of how hard it was to be correct or how confident I was, and "Repeat" as "Wrong".

I feel like a crazy person whenever I “flip” the card over but they work so well lol

Ten days ago I posted a lesson-by-lesson deck for Menschen A1 and asked which book people here are actually stuck with. Netzwerk came up most, so here it is: every word from the Netzwerk neu A1 glossary, 1865 cards, split into 12 subdecks matching the Kapitel, in book order. You unsuspend the chapter your course is on and that's it.

Each card has the word with audio (nouns voiced separately in singular and plural), an example sentence with translation and audio, a picture drawn for that exact sentence, colored articles with plural forms, and verbs with separable prefixes marked (an|fangen), sich where it belongs, and government (warten auf +Akk).

On the number, since it came up last time: 1865 is the complete glossary of the book, about 155 words per chapter, and the deck assumes you never grind it all at once. A frequency deck is a different tool. Your test next week is on Kapitel 5, not on the top 1000 words. If you only care about the exam, 700 cards carry the tag pruefung, that's the official Goethe A1 word list, so -tag:pruefung, select all, suspend, and you're down to those.

What was generated and how: translations from the German with GPT-4o-mini, example sentences with GPT-4o and GPT-5.5, pictures with gpt-image-1, audio with ElevenLabs. Every translation was then checked by a second model against its German example sentence for wrong-sense picks (Claude, plus a GPT-5.5 flag and Claude Opus 5 judge pass on the newer cards), and the flagged ones were fixed before upload. No native speaker has reviewed any of it yet, so expect errors. Listen to the audio yourself before committing to it.

If you spot a wrong translation, a word in the wrong chapter, or an example that doesn't sound like something a person would say, tell me here and it goes into the next update. One question back: which textbook is your course on? Menschen and Netzwerk are done, and the lesson mapping is the only part that doesn't transfer, so the book that comes up most here is the one I map next.

So I have been using anki for a year or so, mostly for Russian vocab, as I have been studying russian 2 years now. With Russian my tactic right now is just reading literature, and adding a max of three words per page to anki. This is tiring, but ok, and is working.
My question is: how can I use anki for German? Because I speak dutch natively, and many words I already know/can intuitively understand as the languages are similar. Big frequency lists would be a waste of time and sentence mining would be very tiring, and counterproductive, as I think the best thing I can do is to simply read as much German as possible.
Tips?

Does anyone know of an anki deck that translates from English or Spanish into the top 5000 or top 1000 or so words of Lebanese Arabic? I am not interested in any other dialects of Arabic including other dialects in the Levant. Only Lebanese. Thank you!
