Keeping queen's strange death

I left the ants (Camponotus ligniperda) for two weeks. When I came back the queen was dead with a big hole in the abdomen. The rest ants look healthy. For sure not a problem with water or food.

Any ideas? thx!

The ant is a tiny creature, yet it teaches some of life’s greatest lessons in persistence and unity.

This morning, I found these little ones turning a massive cicada into a shared feast. Individually, they’re tiny. Together, they’re an unstoppable force…. each one moving with incredible precision toward the same purpose.

Strength in numbers. Precision in purpose. 🐜

(Also I am not keeping them all in the same test tube, I just only had one at the time)

Chat/General Hottest Oklahoma summer anyone can remember; fire ant drilling into okra and watermelons

Upvotes

I moved back to Oklahoma about fourteen years ago. Most summers, I remember a handful of days over 100. This year we've had 31 days 100+ in the past month and a half. It hit 110.

This is causing odd things to happen. One friend is losing watermelons to fire ants drilling into them. Others have abandoned okra plants entirely because fire ants are inside the pods and all over all the plants. And they had so many plants!

Maybe the fire ants are seeking moisture and putting out shallow trays of water might keep them from this destructive behavior?

Has anyone ever seen or heard about these things before?

Keeping Mating Season Prevention

Upvotes

I've been curious about something, how do you prevent ants from mating while keeping a colony? I don't keep colonies but I plan to, and a question I randomly thought of was what to do in the case the ants try to produce new colonies. Will the ants just not do a mating season in captivity? Or will they and I need to clear out the new queens. A lot of species fly during their mating and I doubt I'd have space for that, what do I do?

My daughter was just about to take the puppy out this morning and turned back and said "Uhh, nope!"
I have never seen such a swarm ever. We can't imagine what they are attacking. We don't eat out there. (Indiana)

Science Why are Pheidole listed within the Attini tribe?

I was looking at the wikipedia page for the Attini tribe and under the listed Genera I found Pheidole ants within. I found this strange as I am somewhat familiar with Pheidole ants as being the genera which Big Headed Ants belong to. I looked around at other pages about Attini including AntWiki and BugsWithMike which both list Pheidole as being within Attini. Bugs with Mike has pictures of Pheidole crassicornus, but they themselves aren't listed as being within Attini.

After some more research (in fact very recent as it was me trying to back all this up while writing it) I discovered that this may be due to Pheidole providens which was once described as Atta providens by Sykes in 1835, but after being reclassified into Pheidole it remains in Attini despite me being unable to find any description of them cultivating fungus.

Is this just a mainstay of their old classification or do they properly belong in Attini?

Science What is going on here? Connecticut, USA. This developed within the last couple of hours

Can someone shed some light on what is going on here? It’s a large (to me) swarm of little black/brown ants that seemed to appear out of nowhere in the last couple of hours.

My guess is something has disturbed a nest under this slate (we have moles all over) but don’t really know what I’m talking about.

All these ants. Literally just for A spoon from last night. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life. And don’t tell me “you should’ve cleaned up” or whatever because other people straight up leave entire meals on the counter and FUCKING nothing. I really don’t want to have to call an exterminator. But is that what it’s going to fucking take

I'm in Texas and the past few weeks I've been seeing ants in my bathroom. I think these are carpenter ants. On 8/27 I put down some of the Terro perimeter bait in my shower. They did gather it because I saw bunch of activity after that, and the bait was gone. I'm still seeing a lot of activity. It seems like they powered up after eating the Terro bait.😐

Tonight I put the advance bait down and they seems to be gathering it now, the picture of the ants is them eating the Advance bait.

Does this stuff work? I don't really know what else to do at this point.

If so im absolutely pissed, its been 7 years without a single sighting of rifa in my yard, but this nuptial season i found 2 queens and knew those idiots had flown in. They are about a foot away from my beloved wild florida harvesters and i dont want to harm them, but these buggers are getting too close. They are bicolored, just a little bigger than a crematogaster, and wayy too fast. Central fl, bonus tax of the harvesters in question. While im at it, if anyone can think of how to get them to move or perish without killing any harvesters that’d be awesome. (I also have some unidentified tiny black ants terrorizing my other colony🫩)
