We’re moderate earners to this area, making about 130% the Austin median household income, but we have investments that bolster our financial wellbeing and flexibility. We genuinely like the look and feel of many of Austin’s “older classic” neighborhoods, those Carrington builds especially. We’ve been dreaming of moving into any of the neighborhoods along 183 (see map image) and we’re very patient, but have experienced what a lot of Austin homebuyers find frustrating: the “look and feel” also includes surprises like aluminum wiring, and unmitigated flooding of the garage from sloped driveways.
We’d like to build something that actually fits in with its neighbors of the 70s and are looking for a builder in Austin capable of making it happen.
A lot of our searches have turned up talented companies producing beautiful homes, but they’re just not our style, and the lack of cost transparency for the process let alone the build is a let-down.
Do you have experience with custom builders in the area? Are we going about this all wrong, and should we massively renovate something instead (am I wrong in assuming that would be more costly than new building)? Where do we begin?

I’m looking to stay at a one bedroom apartment downtown and have narrowed my search to these 3 apartment buildings:

Northshore
- Pro: best location imo since it’s very walkable to Lady Bird trail, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods.
- Con: kinda old

415 Colorado
- Pro: very new, about a year old
- Con: very few units available at a time, so it’s hard to view an empty unit before committing

Hanover Brazos
- Pro: the rent is lower than the other two options for a one bedder Downton
- Con: views are blocked by either buildings or neighbors balconies

Do you have any insights to these options?

So I recently just moved here to the Austin area (in May), immediately started applying for jobs and finally found one in June- I worked for a certain unnamed, "Appliance Family" based in North Austin.

I was employed as a 1099 contractor (mostly for the owner to avoid taxes). I was provided with tools, on a lease of $600- I did not get $600 worth of tools but that's what I paid for them because I had to, I was also given uniforms, a company van and was reimbursed for gas I paid for with my own money and would get compensated at the end of the week if the owner found it convenient to do so. Sometimes id have to wait a while or remind him multiple times.

I generally worked 50-60+ hours per week without overtime (1099 problems) and the agreement was that I'd get 40% of all money collected. I almost never saw that number match the money I brought in due to questionable "deductions" that I can't even verify because all pay was handled by the owner and would be issued via Zelle or Venmo without a paystub.

I was given minimal training other than how to bill people with their systems, and sent out in the field to mostly just Google how to diagnose and repair peoples appliances, and charge them for it (parts/labor).

I tolerated all this because I needed to have a job, since I just got here but after 3 months of ridiculous routing- limited compensation and threats of losing that job, and/or having pay reduced for various issues on the owners opinion, I was given the choice of basically take it or leave it on Friday. I snapped and finally chose to leave it.

The grand finale to this shit show is that the owner- is now refusing to pay me at all. Saying that he was gonna withhold my paycheck last paycheck for 2 weeks, because "I'm a businessman, and I run a business".

I objected to this and cited Texas law when an employee quits- or gets fired and instead he has responded with threats of not paying me at all- and instead reducing the pay to nothing and sending me an invoice for what HE determines I owe HIM.

This completely destroys me financially. My rent/car payment are due on the first (tomorrow) and I was supposed to be paid yesterday. I tried explaining that to him, and his indifferent attitude is that it sucks to be me, more or less.

ive begun the process of filing ss-8 with the IRS for misclassification of employment and have reached out to TWC but those processes take months and will likely never see me paid for any of this- if at all

I'm fucked because of this but I hope maybe when the IRS catches wind maybe they can return the favor to these unethical and morally wrong practices.

TLDR: The appliance family are stealing my last paycheck and probably putting me out on the streets.

Hi! I’m a single female, early 30s, moving to Austin with my small dog. Looking for a house but wouldn’t rule out an apartment if it’s the right fit.

My job is off 183 near the Domain, and I can do up to a 30 min commute but would rather keep it shorter. Budget is $2,200-2,500/month.

I’ve gone back and forth on the Domain itself but not sold on it. Mainly want somewhere I’d feel safe living alone, some walkability, and not completely dead on weekends.

I moved here in 2015 and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2012/13 (it was right around the holidays and my spinal tap was legit on NYE) but since moving here I haven’t been able to find a neurologist in network when I did/do have insurance that has specialized in MS that wasn’t far away or that I could afford because I haven’t had insurance the whole time I’ve lived here. I’ve also had two different back injuries which have forced me to quit my most recent job (they told me i’d either get demoted from a management position and get a paycut, or be forced to quit despite having multiple requests for work accommodations from multiple doctors which another employee got for a different disability) and I am afraid to file for disability because I know everyone gets denied, and I don’t have any recent visits from neurologists for my MS, but do have lots of documentation from orthopedic surgeons and other specialists for my back, my diagnosis from before I moved here and other records that have multiple sclerosis in my charts from giving them my medical records when I moved from my neurologists and MS specialist back in chicago.

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips on how to go about filing for disability where you won’t get immediately denied and have to wait years, or a good law firm that could help with this? I’ve legit worked hard my entire life, until I literally was forced not to anymore and I really feel hopeless. I’m in lot of pain everyday and have tried to make money being an artist but it isn’t consistent pay wise, and I really don’t know what to do anymore.
