Other šŸŽ‰NEW RULEšŸŽ‰- No complaining/venting about third parties.

Happy sunday everyone from your lovely mod team! We have added a new rule, no more complaining about third parties. We have been seeing an increasing number of, "DONT BOOK XYZ" or "THIS IS A SCAM!!!" Not only are most of these posts not a question you also aren't going to get sympathy out of hospitality workers for not booking directly. However to clarify, you can still make posts asking about how to get out of third party reservations or how to get a refund. As long as its still in a question format its allowed. However, any posts complaining about third parties will be removed and you could be banned. Thanks everyone! 🌟

Jobs Ritz Carlton to a 3 star hotel- its not me it's them

Basically, I worked at the Ritz for a few years and I now work for a different property. Yesterday was my first day and during the interviews all of the managers told me that none of the other front desk have previous hotel experience (big red flag to me...) -

1st day was yesterday and management introduced me to a few front desk and mentioned my prior experience and omg the dirty looks and side comments were bold but I kept the peace.

2nd day - today and I met a new coworker and my goodness she is such a tense individual. She can't handle working under pressure and she is mouthy. She was suppose to train me. She showed me two very vague things.

My secret is that I've worked with this system before so I know my way around- I just needed a refresher.

I'm asking for advice on how to not rub people the wrong way due to my background. If anyone cares - I left the Ritz for a different state and in this state the job market sucks - so I had to just pick a place to work.

As of right now I am the ONLY person with hotel experience and the way the coworkers speak to the guests are crazy and insensitive smh.

The job doesn't seem hard but it's just I didnt want to be introduced as the one who worked at the Ritz!

Idk maybe I'm overthinking...

Jobs Looking for international hotel internship recommendations

Hey everyone! I’m a first-year tourism & hotel management student trying to figure out where to do my international internship next year.

My uni actually covers my flights and living expenses through a grant, so I come fully funded. I’m hoping to land a spot at a luxury resort or boutique hotel, ideally helping out with guest relations or social media.

Since I can technically go anywhere, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by options. Does anyone have recommendations for cool locations or specific hotels/resorts that are great for interns? Any general advice on reaching out to high-end places would be awesome too!

Thanks in advance!

Reservations Hotelspeak: ā€œstaying through Friday..ā€means c/o on Sat?

When a guest requests a room, checking in ā€œSeptember 3rd and staying through Friday September 14thā€, does this mean a check out the morning of the 15th? I need clarification on what ā€œstaying throughā€ actually means to a front desk agent.

Hotel Policies Agoda Cancellation Fee Waiver - Any Recourse?

Hi everyone,

On August 27th I was trying to book a hotel on Agoda for the nights of September 2nd-4th. Yes, from reading posts here I know Agoda is shitty, it was my first time booking a hotel so I had no idea. I will never book third party again after this.

After I entered my credit card information and pressed confirm, I was taken to a loading screen and it said something along the lines of ā€œThe room you were trying to book is no longer available. Your booking was not confirmedā€. So, I go book another room. However, when I check my email, I received confirmation emails for BOTH rooms and was charged twice. Unfortunately, the rooms were non-refundable.

I submitted a cancellation fee waiver request with Agoda on the 27th and received no response until the 29th, where they said the request was denied because their property didn’t respond. I call the hotel about this and they claim they never received anything from Agoda and that I should take the issue up with them. For the next two days, I try to call Agoda with multiple agents. One told me that they will refund me if I can get written approval from the hotel, another tells me they can get approval if their ā€œbooking partnerā€ agrees, which I think is the hotel? I have this statement from Agoda in writing. I try to get this written confirmation by calling the hotel but they were completely useless and told me either to talk to Agoda (I already did) or email them. I emailed them and this morning (September 1st) I finally got a response saying that the booking is non-refundable and since it’s so close to check-in they cannot waive the cancellation fee (which is the full cost of the stay). I’m at a complete loss since I don’t want to be out $500. My questions are:

  1. At this point, is there any recourse other than submitting a chargeback with the credit card company?

  2. Unfortunately, I never screenshotted the error message that caused me to double book. Do I have any chance of a successful chargeback since to Agoda, it presumably looks like I booked two rooms on purpose?

  3. Will submitting a chargeback request before my stay have any impact on checking in?

  4. Can I still submit a chargeback after my stay, given I never stay in the second room?

Advice would be greatly appreciated! I only have 1 day left and I REALLY don’t want to lose $500.

Hotel Policies Broke the rotary bath drain knob during my stay at a hotel

I accidentally broke the rotating bath drain knob while staying at a 2 stars hotel and I don’t know what to do. The knob was so stuck and with minimal strength it gave up on me and broke.
Should i prevent the front desk and let them know about it or just leave it as is.

Hotel Policies Hotel Owner cancelled the Non refundable booking

Hi I'm really hoping that someone can help me on this. I booked for 3D and 2N in Agoda, but since we are experiencing inclement weather this past few weeks the owner says that she will personally cancelled the booking and just wait for refund, I tried talk to her to know the reason and we actually worked it out. But after it I didnt know that the cancelation if still ongoing and I just received email regarding it.

But since I already talked to the owner I was advised ti just rebook, but upon checking on my card, instead of refund, I got charge again for the same booking that is supposed to be canceled. I don't know what to do, should I wait for it to post or should I contact my bank regarding the double payment, or is it really a double payment?

The 08/01 payment is my orig payment and the 08/31 payment is the new payment charge on my account.

Reservations Hopper seems really shady with tax instructions...

I work hotel front desk. Someone explain to me how prepaid reservations from Hopper have instructions about not charging tax to the VCC. It says they will pay the tax direct to the government. How is that even possible!!! They don't have our tax ID, and many places have both city and state tax. Seems like a huge scam that they're running...

Hotel Policies Friends and Family rate

Hi,

I have a question regarding the Friends & Family rate.

Am I allowed to book a discounted stay for my sibling, or is the rate only available for myself and my parents? To clarify, I wouldn't be staying with them—I would only be making the reservation on their behalf.

Also, is the Friends & Family rate valid at any Kempinski hotel worldwide, or does it only apply within the region where I work? For example, if I work at a Kempinski hotel in Europe, can I use the discount at Kempinski hotels worldwide, or only at European properties?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hotel Policies Issue with water leak in hotel at 1am - what would you do?

I’ll preface by saying I don’t do a whole ton of travel, and I’ve never had any issues with my rooms before. How do I go about dealing with this?

This is at a 5-star hotel in Asia, part of IHG/booked through the Edit program via Chase.

BLUF version: water leak from the ceiling at 1am, changed to new room after 30-40min, hotels offer of compensation: same quality room, same view, and: 2 drink vouchers.

Background:

It was 1am and I got out of bed to use the loo and slipped on a puddle. Turned the lights on and saw a leak from the ceiling, dripping through a light fixture and also running down the wall, damaging a large piece of artwork.

Immediately called front desk, expecting to get sorted ASAP into a new room. Front desk apologizes and says someone will be up shortly.

Few minutes later, a maintenance worker shows up, enters, quickly assesses, and says he’ll be right back. I assumed he was heading back to discuss with front desk.

He shows back up a few minutes later with a ladder. I think he was expecting to begin maintenance then and there. I said I’d rather he contact front desk and explain the situation and that having us sit around and wait, now around 1:15am, while he tinkers, is unacceptable.

Phones the front desk, puts me on with them, they apologize again and say they’ll sort out a new room, just hold tight and they’ll call back when ready.

Few minutes later, they ring. I misunderstood what they said and thought they’d be sending someone up to walk us to the new room. Instead, they said the person was already there and to open the door for them — I learned later that this was what was said.

Few minutes go by and we call down again, growing impatient. Apparently the staff member had been outside (miscommunication), he rang the bell but we had it on Do No Disturb so we didn’t hear anything. I ran to open the door and he greeted me. He said he didn’t want to knock on the door for fear of bothering us.

About 40min has gone by at this point. We’ve packed a small bag of essentials for overnight and we walk to our new room. Guy said we’d get this sorted all out tomorrow morning.

Morning comes, we’d made plans already in a nearby city so we were ready to head off asap. Front desk fumbles about in letting us know what’s happening: asks if it’s okay for them to go into the original room while we’re gone, asks for the new room back because it’s technically booked out for another guest, and that we’d get sorted a different room once we got back, says nevermind we can keep both rooms as to avoid having to pack and move again, and that we’d still get a new ā€œbetterā€ room once we return. We say okay but we just want to get on as to not waste more time.

Return around 7pm expecting some good news.

Offer: change to an equal room plus 2 drink vouchers at their bar/restaurant.

We said this was not acceptable. They asked what we would like. At this point, we are very tired and want to rest up before heading to dinner. We take the card to our new room. Said we’d think about it and come back to discuss after we’ve got the energy. Did not take the drink vouchers.

Am I bugging? Are 2 drink vouchers at all what anyone would expect? I’m really surprised they didn’t show more urgency once they heard of the leak, sending a maintenance worker instead of having someone from the night desk come sort us out. And at the end, 2 drink vouchers to compensate us for the trouble of having to switch rooms at 1/2am, having to go back and forth between 3 rooms now to sort our things.

Jobs Looking for advice, first job as a housekeeper

Sorry if this is not the right place to be posting, I didn't know where to ask this. If there is a right place to post this, please say. Also, sorry for the long read.

To start, this is literally my first ever job. Before this, I've been helping around the house and keeping track of certain things for my mom. I really wanna try and get out more as I'm turning 20 soon and still feel so lost trying to be independent.

As recommended by my mom (since she used to be a housekeeper) I went to culinary academy to do a 2 week training of a gra, and it help with basics. They then help me get the housekeeping job I currently have. And it is Venetian. A very strong start for a first job, I know. I'm still in training, just finished the second week.

The first week was at culinary academy, and it was pretty much the same, just giving the basics for Venetian specifically. Then the second week of training was at the actual hotel. The first two days was orientation, the third day was computer stuff, getting keys, getting our work clothes, and a telling of what's happening on day four.

Day four was a train wreck. It had been going good at the start. We were shown to our floor, shown out to stock our carts, and got our devices. The problem came when we were told there will be one instructor per two trainees, when yesterday we were told it would be one per trainee. Now I didn't mind much, I just work better with a one on one. Me and my coworker i wa spared with thought we were gonna be working on a room together before doing a separate room. The instructor instead just had us watch her do the work, then suddenly sent me off to do a room.

It freaked me out bad, I didn't know what to do. I work better doing the work while being instructed, so just standing for 40 minutes while she talked and did the work (also switching between tasks and going off topic) didn't help. I started the room, then she suddenly came in and told me I had to hurry up with whatever I was doing because it was time for lunch. By time I came back to my room after lunch, I had no clue where I left off on.

She eventually came in to help me, then sent me off to my partners room to check it as if I was a guess. I learned from my coworker that my instructor had been comparing me to her and talking about how slow I was with doing my room (I'm not comparing myself to other coworkers). We were supposed to have been able to do three rooms, but I ended up just doing one. I left home that day crying and asking my mom for advice. Talking to her really helped

The fifth day was a bit better. I talked to my instructor and she understood and did a one on one with me for two rooms, then I did a room on my own. It took far to long to do because I was remembering what to do along the way. I went to my next room, and it was pretty clean already, so I just finished what needed to be clean. I then learned that my instructor had my other coworkers help clean my last room, which I thanked them all for doing so. The instructor I had is overall pretty understanding, but I'll have a different instructor on the starting week, so Idk if they'll be kind or not.

We we're supposed to be able to do 5 rooms, but I technically only did two, since I had help for the other three rooms.

Now it's the weekend, I'm home, reflecting on it all. Now, I love the job, the people I've met so far have been nice, my coworkers are nice, I haven't met a rude guest yet, but what I don't like is how the training is going. What me and my coworkers expected was: Day 1 & 2: orientation / Day 3: tests, keys, work clothes / Day 4 & 5: one to two rooms and a group working on one room together / the rest of next week: slowly adding rooms each day until we get to 10-12. Both my mom and the few experienced coworkers explained that this is how they were trained in the process. So this is kinda what I expected.

Instead, I got this. And not only that, but by the end of the coming week, they expect us to be doing 10-12 suites in 8 hours (7 because 1 hour lunch). At the moment, I can hardly do four. I'm sure my the end of the week, I can maybe do 8, but not 10-12. At this point, I'm just expecting to be let go by the end of training.

Now, I'm not saying I can't do 12 suites, just I can't get to that number in just a week.

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. I told myself I'll just try my best and go with the flow, and whatever happens after happens. But today I have been feeling down, a constant feeling to cry, and having anxiety on going back to work in two days. Even my dreams have been all about work.

I don't even know what kind of advice I'm asking for, but I'm looking for others who is a housekeeper or has been one opinions on this. Maybe advice on how you got through your first time as a housekeeper? I dunno. Anything will be appreciated! Sorry if this is more of a rant.

Jobs Sales Coordinator day to day?

I’ve got a second interview coming up for a Sales Coordinator position, and I’m trying to get a better idea of what the day to day actually feels like. I have a little bit of sales admin experience, but most of my background is on the hotel operations/front desk side. For anyone who’s worked as a Sales Coordinator (or worked closely with one), what does a normal day look like?

Jobs How to speed up the Housekeeping process?

Hello! I just got a job as a housekeeper, it's my third day. The last two days we had around 12 rooms per day, and I work 6 hours with a 30 minute lunch. That's about 27 minutes per room, but we also have a handful of stayovers, so about 20 minutes per room.

Each room is differently sized, some are huge and have 2 beds and an entire kitchenette. I can make a bed in 10 minutes, and that leaves me 10 minutes for restocking, cleaning the floors, cleaning the bathrooms etc.

How can I speed up the process? Any tips or corners I could cut? Even when I push myself I can't get it under 20 minutes, and I'm worried I won't be able to reach the quota.

Reservations Did I double charge someone?

So I had 2 women come in and they were already checked in online but had no card on file, they wanted to split the payment so I went into the payment section in the folio and got their card information. Then I went into authorize the cards for the proper amount. But now it says ā€œfolio balance $112ā€ and ā€œcredit card authorization $112ā€ does that mean I’ve charged them twice? I would ask my boss but he’s always really annoyed when I call him so I’m doing everything I can to avoid that.

Reservations Why can’t hotel know how much taxes exactly they are going to charge me when I book

I booked a chain hotel in WA for one night through the hotel’s website (3 weeks in advance). I got the confirmation email with the total amount including taxes and fees. It also says they gonna charge me for this amount on the day of booking and then no charge on arrival. Then when I checked in they told me I wasn’t charged yet. No big deal. Gave them my card. After the stay, I realized they charged me a few dollars more than the amount I booked.
I called customer service and they said it’s because additional taxes and fees may apply, and they don’t know how much until my stay. How did their system not know exactly how much taxes when I booked? This never happened when I book through 3rd party website.

It was posted as full-time on indeed. I was asked in the interview if I was sure that I was available 40 hours per week. My onboarding paperwork said full-time. The job is only 24hrs/week.

Reservations Best way to book a block of rooms

I’m looking to book a block of 10 to 12 rooms for my daughter’s soccer team. She will have about 15 games in San Antonio, Texas. That is a 4 Hour drive for the team.. I am thinking of submitting their game schedule to a couple of different hotels to see what kind of price they can give me. I want to request that they mirror my reservations to their game schedule. Any tips of how I can get them to give me the best rate possible since we will be returning 15 more times between now and the spring? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Reservations Hotel Mix-Up ($150 for a 6 hour stay at 2 star hotel!)

UPDATE: I got the room back through third party’s awesome customer service!! :)

I got a hotel last night online through a third party. For tonight, instead of last night. I show up at 2am and paid an early check in fee, whatever it is what it is.
Well I spend 6 hours there and then go to check out, front desk says ā€œyour check out is for tomorrowā€ and talks about fees and such. I say okay just give me the room key back, myself and the person I was with were talking about spending another night.
I get a call an hour ago saying she went ahead and checked me out. We went back and forth a bit, supposedly nothing she can do. She said she apparently didn’t hear our conversation about staying another night. The night I paid for.

So now I’ve been on the phone with front desk, customer service for the hotel (not guest relations it was closed today), and the third party which is not answering and has had me on hold for nearly an hour.

What do I do?? I work hard for my money and $150 for 6 hours at a 2 star hotel is honestly ridiculous! The free breakfast was prepackaged muffins and coffee.

Hotel Amenities How to deal with " I can't read or write " scams

Hi guys, I just started to work at a hotel reception about a week ago, something happened today that just left me confused. 2 people came through seperatly both saying they can't read or write so I'll have to check them in manually. Clearing lying as they pulled out their phones to check. After that they just started making up things like how the other person was in Ireland and not checked in ( when I literally just did a few minutes ago ) and how their bed had brown stuff on it, even saying they smelled it to make sure??? It's just really confusing with these people and I don't know what to do next time these kinds of people show up, because I know they are just lying to get free stuff but sometimes they just be lying for absolutely no reason. please help me

Hotel Policies Locking up shampoo/conditioner and hand soap

Hey yall, I work at a holiday inn express, I was curious if other hotels also lock up their hygiene items in a metal bar so the guests can't take them. I haven't stayed in a hotel in years so I can't say for others but I've never seen that before. They are full size dove body items but the housekeepers don't check them at all so if someone runs out of liquid we have to physically go up there and unlock it and then come down and refill it. I wish they still used minis

Hotel Policies Transwoman but separate gendered bedrooms

I have a question and my boss, my best friend and I all have a different opinion on this.

We only have separate gender shared bedrooms (we are a hostel), so women and men sleep separately. What room would you give to a transwoman?

  1. She is a woman so I would put her in the women's room.

But how do you know the women in the room wouldn't feel uneasy?

2) I would put her in a private room but still at the shared room price.

3) I would put her in a private room at the price of a private room.

Thank you!

Edit: she herself told me she was a transwoman
