Hey locals. We’ve heard your requests.

Book clubs. Local group meetups. Someone to hit up a movie with. Hiking partners. Trivia teams. Coffee chats.

There has clearly been a growing demand for a space where people can connect with others in Vancouver in a platonic way.

We're happy to announce that that space now exists.

r/VancouverFriends has officially launched and will serve as the dedicated subreddit for friendship-focused posts and platonic R4R requests.

Going forward, instead of being simply removed, all platonic R4R-style posts will be redirected to r/VancouverFriends so that r/AskVan can remain focused on questions and answers about the city.

If you’ve been looking for community, this is your chance to build it. We'll see you there.

Oddly Specific 🎯 People are better looking in BC

I recently moved to Vancouver from Montreal a couple months ago, and also lived in Toronto and Halifax previously. I feel people here are better looking in general and more athletic compared to other provinces... or is it just me lol??

Travel 🚗 ✈ Is Mapquest app any good in Vancouver / BC?

Would like to get off of Google Maps and Apple Maps. Has anyone used Mapquest in this area?

(Edit: Also, are there any good made-in-Canada options?)

Oddly Specific 🎯 When do you all put your A/C away for the autumn/winter season?

UPDATE: Thank you!!! I didn't expect more than 3 people to respond so I really appreciate all the input. Ill probably put it away within the next 2 weeks. Thank you again!!

Hey Vancouver, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. However, its my first time living on my own and having control of the temperature in my house and I find myself surprisingly unsure of when I should cool it with the AC (pun intended). Its a bit of a pain to set up, so id prefer to wait until the sweltering heat of the summer is behind us for at least a few months.

Thoughts? And thank you/sorry in advance if I should post somewhere else.

Medical 💉 People with Nurse Practitioner as their primary care provider, what have been your experiences?

I currently do have a Family Doctor, and I'm pretty happy with him, but his availability is rather spotty—usually it's about a 4 week wait for phone appointments, with in-person being much longer, if there's any availability at all. Compounding this is that the clinic itself can often be difficult to get in touch with by phone if anything needs to be sorted. This can make the turnaround time to get anything involving lab tests analyzed extremely long.

For these reasons I'm considering switching to a Nurse Practitioner as a care provider, as I've heard they tend to have much wider availability. For those that went this route, what have your experiences been? Thanks very much for any advice on the matter.

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Roller skating rink

Upvotes

Hello! I’m visiting a friend who lives in North Vancouver next week and we agreed to go roller skating together however I’m having trouble finding places to do so. I’m from the U.S. and around here we have pretty consistent permanent indoor skating rinks like classic skating. Saw some recommendations for Rolla skate but it’ll be closed until after our visit, any ideas?

(He’s new to Vancouver as well and also isn’t familiar with any places to go skating)

Travel 🚗 ✈ YVR to Manila Travel

Folks,

Anyone around here traveled recently from YVR to Manila with Philippine Airlines?

My family booked a ticket for a destination wedding. Now there's concerns about a 13-14 hour flight not being comfortable due to aging planes and non functional equipment within the aircraft (ie entertainment).

Currently I see we are slated to fly on a Boeing 777-300

I just wanted to see what everyone's recent experience was.

Some members of my family loves to complain about everything and some are very difficult to travel with. We picked this airline as it was direct and lower cost. If we went with Cathay Pacific, some would not come to an agreement on price etc.

Food 😋 Hawaiian shave ice in Vancouver?

Are there any Hawaiian shave ice places around? I'm not concerned with authenticity per se as much as looking for this style compared to that of the ones I've seen which are I assume are bingsoo, Taiwanese, or some hybrid like the many bubble tea dessert shop places. Thanks!

Housing and Moving 🏡 Why is Vancouver so expensive

Seriously why is cost of living so expensive here compared to, let’s say Montreal. Everything from food, housing and activities. I recently moved here and quite shocked 😳

Housing and Moving 🏡 Passport Office

Hi Everyone.

I need to urgently renew my passport.

Just wondering if anyone has done their passport recently and how was the line up?

I heard that the office has cut back on staff resulting in longer waits.

Thanks so much!

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 PNE Parking - Local Driveways?

We're heading to the PNE, always see comments about the grandmas/aunties waving people down to park in their driveways for cash. Has anyone had any issues? Potential scams that they sell you a parking spot in a random driveway and you get towed? Is there a time limit to how long you can stay? Guess you assume the risk to save $15 from the official parking

Housing and Moving 🏡 Anyone here moved from Alberta to Metro Vancouver? Do you regret it?

Has anyone here actually moved from Alberta (especially Calgary or Edmonton) to Vancouver or one of the surrounding cities like Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, Langley, etc.?

Do you regret the move, or are you happier living in BC?

What do you miss about Alberta? And what is better in Metro Vancouver?

If you had to make the decision again today, would you still move from Alberta to Metro Vancouver?

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 What makes the Aritzia Warehouse Sale worth lining up for hours?

Genuinely curious after seeing the insane lines today.

For people who actually go and wait hours for it, what makes it worth it? Are the deals really THAT good? What is the appeal?

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 How to keep the good summer vibes going in the fall

Upvotes

Now that its officially September and summer is over, Id love to know how you all keep the vibes high during the fall. This summer was packed of free/ affordable events like weekly outdoor cinema and tons of pop ups that my friends and I went to often. Naturally since the weather won’t be as nice anymore, it’ll be tricker to see my friends and convince them to sit outside with me so if theres some events or something we can go do that’d be nice. Can you list some recs on whats goin on in the fall in Van or what sorts of things you do with your friends besides hosting at one of ur houses?

Wedding 😻 Elopement photographer recommendations for Saturday the 26th?

Hi! Looking for recommendations for an elopement photographer who charges by the hour and will be available Saturday, September 26th in the early afternoon.

We’re keeping things very small and simple, so we don’t need a full wedding/elopement package—probably just a couple of hours for some portraits of us in the city. I know this is a bit last-minute, but we had to cancel our wedding because my mother fell ill and couldn't travel, so we decided to elope in her area so she could be there.

Would love recommendations for photographers you’ve personally worked with or know of. Please feel free to drop their website/Instagram and approximate hourly rate if you know it. Thank you!

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Why are there literally no Canadian apples anywhere?

With the (second?) trade war looming, many grocery stores boldly claim to be proudly Canadian, yet most of their produce is from the United States; even lots of salad leaves from California. I’ve found a Canadian source for a lot of things but for the life of me, I haven’t been able to find any Canadian apples (other than the odd farmers market) - 100 different kinds of American apples, a few from NZ and Chile but not a BC apple in sight. Am I missing something? Do we export all of our apples or turn them all into cider?

New to Vancouver 👋 Visited for the first time

What’s the catch? This place is amazing. I love the messy cottage vibes the neighbourhoods have, the gardens are great. You guys love your hedges too apparently.

There was no homelessness where I was. Which was really all over downtown, Stanley park, etc. clean. Young people doing their thing. Saw people walking alone late at night. I genuinely felt very safe there.

The traffic is a bit insane, good luck making a left turn!

I spent 3 days there, was I just lucky or is Vancouver really this amazing?

Housing and Moving 🏡 Underground music scene?

Hi! Me (21)and my girlfriend (24) are considering moving to Vancouver next year on an IEC. She’s from Denver and I’m from Sheffield (uk). I’m aware of the cost of living but my main question is what’s the art and underground music scene like? We both enjoy going to live gigs a lot, I’m also looking to get my foot into the games industry (my degree). We were originally thinking of Montreal however the outdoors and language barrier has us thinking of Vancouver :)

Thank you!

Pets 🐶🐱 1:1 dog trainer recommendations experienced with spitz/primitive breeds

Hi guys, I’m wondering if any of you would like to share positive experiences with dog trainers/training schools that work 1 to 1 and have a good knowledge of spitz type breeds eg husky and / or primitive dog breeds.

I need some help with a 15 month old Shiba Inu who suddenly started hating his collar and his harness. I just want to work on important life skills and reactivity / anxiety issues.

The reason I am requesting recommendations for someone with particular knowledge is because this spunky shiba needs to be trained differently.

I’ve tried group programs where the trainer was only familiar with dogs like the german shepherd, labs, retrievers… and that approach is not effective for a Shiba 😅 so private lessons seem to be the way to go
