Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).

All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.

Important Financial Aid Update

This message was forwarded to the Moderation Team from a verified source within the University.

We would like to remind everyone that the r/ASU Moderation Team consists of students and alumni and is not affiliated with the staff or administration of Arizona State University. The Moderation Team does not speak on behalf of the University.

Financial aid delays are happening at universities from coast to coast after changes made by the federal government to student borrowing guidelines. The new guidelines took effect July 1 and ASU is working to help students understand the changes and their eligibility. ASU has moved the tuition payment date to September 25 for those impacted. Resources and information about financial aid and student loans are available online at https://tuition.asu.edu/financial-aid.

I’m fed up

I feel like every single day, I’m just getting more and more irritated. It’s THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER! This is absolute BS. Sorry not sorry but this is a massive fail. I don’t need to be schooled on the BBB or staffing issues or clarification, I just need to vent. (I’m also sick of the censorship in this thread, why can’t I vent to fellow students?! I know this‘ll get taken down in a few hours because oh no, I’m crap talking about ASU.) Make it make sense. I’ve been checking on the finances tab day in and day out, waiting for updates, BEGGING for updates. I literally can’t fix my car until I get this money. I’m so screwed. I’ve been car-less for weeks and it’s driving me mad. I miss my independence. I miss having the privilege to drive myself to work in the damn morning, to drive anywhere I want whenever I want. My first paycheck from my new job doesn’t hit until September 15th...When I called the financial aid office and asked about a timeline, I finally was like, “Okay so now what, is there a possibility we could be waiting until December?” Her response, “I don’t know, I hope that isn’t the case. Our team is working blah blah blah.” I don’t understand why they can’t just prioritize undergraduate students who have LITTLE to ZERO changes. I know for a fact that I have zero changes to my FA package. I don’t understand why that can’t be expedited. It doesn’t make sense for me to wait when the numbers are going to be the same. SAME for other students in the same boat like ughhhh.

What’s up with all the ASU jokes online?

I keep seeing Arizona State mentioned as the punchline of jokes all over Tiktok and Insta. People always seem to bring up very specific stereotypes.

Is it just an internet running joke at this point, or is there actual history behind why ASU gets singled out so much compared to other big universities that should have the same reputation if not much worse? What’s the story here?

Discrete mathematics w/ Villalobos

Upvotes

I genuinely have no fucking clue how she is able to teach. I feel for the students in the back corner because I sit hella close and can still barely hear her. Also why is discrete mathematics so fucking hard?? Whose idea is it to go from calculus to discrete mathematics. I rather take calculus for engineers 😭😭😭

Upvotes

Health insurance on opt after graduation

I’m currently job hunting on my OPT. What health insurance do people usually get after they graduate and while they are still looking for a job.

Struggling to remain optimistic

First year back at school after some years away. Admittedly, my mental health is not great. Right as school began, two other big events were happening (one still is) that has demanded my time. I’ve tried my best to keep up but I have fallen behind in all of my classes already and each second that passes I feel more and more hopeless. Certainly I’m overthinking and there is plenty of opportunity to catch up and not feel like I’m behind all semester……….right? Would appreciate if anyone has been in a similiar situation and has any advice..

Will I get a refund or will it be used for tuition?

I was wondering if anyone can answer this since the asu queue is wayyyy to long 😭😭

I got a supplemental grant of 500, this year and it says it was applied to my account. now I have other things that pay all of my tuition so the 500 is just for me. Last year (freshmen year) I got a che k in the mail but it didnt say applied to account on asu but showed up in the refund section. This year since I had taken summer classes I have an outstanding balance of 2,300~ will i get that 500 or will it go towards that? So far it hasn't been applied to that, (or i dont cen know where to check if it has) or gotten anything in the mail.

I'm deducing that i wont get it, am I right?

No more posting parodies of posts made in earnest

There are at least three “alternate POV” posts here made as parodies of https://www.reddit.com/r/ASU/s/wbAIQ704jY

They aren’t very funny and some people seem to think they are real

I’m not deleting them, but I am adding the meme/humor “flair” to these posts — and any further entries of the genre will be removed

Please consider how OP would feel — they experienced an at least somewhat traumatic event and now people are posting joke versions of it for a laugh

Is that the community you want?

Anyone at ASU interested in joining a fantasy football league?

Hi everyone! I'm a transfer sophomore and I'm looking to put together a fantasy football league for this season. I don't know a ton of people at ASU yet, so I figured I'd see if anyone here would be interested.

Thinking around 10–12 people, nothing too serious just a fun league where we can have a gc, watch football, and maybe meet up/hang out occasionally during the season.

Probably going to do a $20–$30 buy-in, but I'm open to figuring out the details with everyone who joins.

If you're interested, comment or DM me and I'll get a group chat going!

Also, you don't have to be an expert at fantasy football. Just looking for people who are actually going to set their lineups and have some fun with it.

Meme/Humor Saw some drunk dude bust into someone’s room.

I was coming back from studying a long day of engineering yesterday and it’s my first semester here I was tired and it’s around 1:30am and I go by the Hassayampa Academic Village and this dude drunk out of his mind opens the door and gets in a building, I don’t even think he had a key and there was a weird back and fourth happening but I’m pretty sure it was the guy in the dorm getting angry. I don’t even think he noticed me watching because he was so drunk out of his mind. It was entertaining but I was tired (I’m a stem major) so I left and went straight to sleep. I hope went well for them.

Meme/Humor i Accidentally broke into a room at 1:30am

I was drinking heavy alcohol one night and the voices started talking to me. They started whispering: “Go to the Hassy Building” and so I did. I could feel the sheer strength of my legs make its way to this specific building then suddenly. Boom! I noticed it didn’t use the usual keys, rather it was still those old physical keyholes, and I grab the handle and slowly plummet to the floor being dropped into the dark abyss of katabsis as the horrowing screams of hell incarnate trample over my last drop of innocence. I begged and begged, it was as if I had been transported to the deepest depths of hell as my body squirmed for something to ingest. Anything. Hell was burning me alive, drying me off of all forms of liquids. I was a mere ash waiting to spread among the free wind, no control over my trajectory as a mere particle floating in the sky. I heard the sound of trumpets, so loud it could burst my ears, the sound from the trunk of an elephant, as it blasts throughout. Then suddenly, the trumpets come to a sudden halt, what awaits me are a couple of eyes, filled with confusion and dread then pivoting to pure anger. I was terrified, I had sworn to the Gods to never drink again. The voices had manipulated me against my will.

Anyways, what’s the deal with that?

Meme/Humor Advice on dealing with an alcoholic roommate

I currently live in the Hassy dorms, and I have a chill roommate who's a nice guy, but he drinks almost every night. I don't mind him drinking, but I'm more concerned about his health and worry he might do something dumb. I remember a couple of nights ago that he kept knocking at the door around 2:30 am and mf woke me up. I was mad cuz I had to wake up early, but the thing that I'm concerned about is that he said he broke into someone else's dorm and that he lost his key. I'm hoping this could be a lesson for him, but still, what should I do? Any advice?

Third Culture Kid Club at ASU

Third Culture Kids (TCKs) refers to kids who have spent a significant period of their lives in a culture outside of their parents(expat kids , military brats , missionary kids). TCKs often have a identity crisis and do not completely associate themselves with one culture. If you relate to this then feel free to check out our Instagram handle (tca.asu) ,fill out the google form in the bio and follow us to be notified of upcoming events ! We do game nights , a cultural potluck etc.

Statics CEE 210 MAs

Hi, I have my first statics mastery assessment soon and was wondering if anyone had their old questions that I could use for practice, since I feel like the recitation problems won't be as similar to the test question. I would also love any advice for the MAs, because from what I've heard the first time you take one you're basically just extremely lost the whole time 😅😅

McCord Scholarship Application Advice

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone who has applied for the McCord scholarship at ASU in the past and gotten it what are your tips for applying? I know that they have specific things they look for such as mentorship and leadership but do you think any extracurriculars or experiences made you stand out? Like, have you noticed any trends between the people who have been awarded the scholarship? Also, what was the interview process like? I really appreciate all info people are able to provide! Thanks!

private loans

hello! sorry if this is a silly question, but sallie mae has said they’ve disbursed my loans to my school, but my balance is still the same, and it doesn’t say it’s been applied. obviously, financial aid office is in the trenches. is it safe to assume that it’ll be applied and we’re just waiting for it to go through because of the admin/financial office?
