Hi all, I'm looking to get into cycling and of course I need a bike for that! I don't want to splurge on my first bike before I know what I like so ideally would like to spend under $500 but am willing to go up to $800 or $1000 depending on what's available. I'm happy to get second-hand and recognise not everything will be available but I mostly wanted to just gather a list of bikes and brands to look out for while searching for a good deal (also to help me recognise what is a good deal). Budget does not include other gear, just the complete functional bike itself.

I've got a few requirements for what I'm looking for, I'm hoping this can be translated to bikes that would land around this budget:

• I really want drop handlebars
• Main use case will be for a ~10km commute on road but I would still also like the option to at least ride with friends or try out a group ride or two. Will also use it for fitness and fun here and there. For commuting, I only need to bring a backpack.
• I appreciate how light a bike is, although this isn't really much of a concern
• Aesthetics does play a part, I don't want to ride something that looks ugly. Personally also do not want a red bike. Favourite colour is purple if anything's available.
• Carbon preferred but I understand can't ask for too much at a budget lol

From my own research, I think I'm looking for an endurance road bike as I'm not racing the geometry of a race bike would be a bit aggressive? But would love to be corrected and learn more about the hobby! Thanks!!

So I’ve recently gotten this saddle bag but the boa strap doesn’t sit under my saddle, so I’ve just looped the other side of the strap all the way through, I can still tighten it but now the bag sits in a different orientation than designed, is this gonna be an issue?

I want to buy a bike for my daughter’s third birthday. She’s very competent on her balance bike and keen for pedals. She’s tallish for her age ~97cm, but I think a 12” bike will make the transition easiest. Obviously we’d get more time out of a 16” but there is a younger child who’ll get use out of a 12” eventually too. She’s very lean so my priority is a lightweight bike so that she can handle it. I’m finding most websites don’t specify the weight, so I’m looking for recommendations. So far the Byk e250, Neo 12 and Trek Precaliber 12 seem like good options. Suggestions welcome, thanks!

Hi! I am 184 cm tall with an 85.5 cm inseam. Merida Smartfit recommends both M and L.

I prefer a slightly more spacious fit, but I’m worried that the L with its 110 mm stem might be too long. Unfortunately, I don’t have a chance to test ride either size before buying.

Anyone around 182–186 cm riding a Scultura Endurance / GR? Which size did you choose, and how does it fit?

I’ve been riding forever, and for most of that time I just wore regular sports clothes. A couple of months ago I bit the bullet and got some bib shorts and I was converted to Lycra on the bottom half. I’m not the most svelte of blokes with a bit of a gut and some truely impressive love handles. So I’m a bit reluctant to don a cycling jersey.

But I do like the idea of the rear pockets on cycling jerseys, and the ability to unzip them a bit for some ventilation.

I’ve googled relaxed fit cycling jerseys and there are a few hits, notably the Neopro ones, but they look relaxed fit for a slim cyclist.

Have any of you gents out there with box shaped torsos had any luck with finding a cycling jersey that is a bit looser?

HS senior here. I need a bike for a 10-mile one-way commute, mostly paved roads/bike paths.

My school restricts e-bikes, so I want a normal bike now, but I may convert it to an e-bike later for college.

Budget: $300–500, maybe up to ~$600

Currently considering:

• Cannondale Quick 6 — ~$480
• Specialized Sirrus X 1.0 — ~$550
• Trek FX 1 Gen 4 — ~$650

Priorities: comfortable for 20 miles/day, efficient, rack- and pannier-compatible, reliable, and reasonably easy to convert later.

Which would you pick? Any better options around this price?

Got an opportunity to buy the above bike 2nd hand with a one year warranty on battery and bike as a whole from a reputable supplier. 6.3k AUD. I have a 1 year old and am planning on a second kid in the next couple of years. Seems like a good deal but it's a lot of money. 3rd gen would be nice but similar spec would be north of 10k. Just sanity checking myself but appreciate anyone who can get me over the mental line of dropping this much on a bike. Many thanks in advance on the support.

Just looking at getting some headphones/open ear buds for riding. Does anyone have any suggestions. Was looking into open run pro 2 but have seen mixed reviews.

As the title says, I’m looking for an upright step through bike for commuting but can’t find any in store. I like the look of the tokyobike bisou but it’s probably a bit too pricey and again it’s not one I can try in store without buying it first. I’ve been trawling marketplace but a lot of the Dutch style bikes are too small for me or too far away to pick up!
Any suggestions on where I can find one without paying an arm and a leg?

I have typically just used mutual friends bikes or hired, and they always seem to be Marlins of some degree which seem like a decent bike, but thought I’d come ask you guys, who have more experience than me!

Looking to spend any where around $1k as I’m probably still entry level and can upgrade parts as I need which seems like fun in itself.

Any recommendations? It it helps I’m a gym goer and weigh approx 100Kg so I’m dense! (Not sure if that matters) And hitting the trials has been the most fun cardio so far.

Looking for a bike that can hit trails and do some decent tracks (been to Forrest a bunch for you victorians!) and want to keep exploring

I have been researching Polygon Xtradas, Marin San Quinten and Trek Marlins but as I said, I’d love your inputs!

I cycle around a fair amount to commute and visit places to go for walks (up to around 20km). I'd like to get into longer rides and was looking at a second hand Giant TCR Advanced 1 with a Shimano ultegra di2 groupset for $500.

Apparently it's had a couple owners. I don't really know much about road bikes so wanted to get people's opinions on whether it's a decent bike and appropriately priced. Thanks!

I managed to crack the axle on my hub and it's no longer made anymore but luckily I have a spare hub I can swap in.

The details are :

- 32h

- I'd go for whatever spokes are cheapest

- internal nipple so no rim tape

- carbon rims if it matters

I have a 2019 Surly Disc Trucker and am contemplating on whether or not to add a motor/battery. Or to sell it and get an already built e-bike.

Would be wanting to get between 120km - 150km range.

Would this workout ok?

I just got my bike serviced at 99 bikes and my invoice came back with a $40 'Labour electric bike add on' charge. What is that for? They didn't do anything related to its electric components. Is this normal?

I’m a cycling newbie looking to get a bike computer, and I’m currently considering the Bryton Rider 650.

I came across a Taiwanese review and it seems like pretty good value for the price. Navigation is the most important feature for me, though, so I’m wondering how well the GPS performs in Sydney. Does anyone have experience using the Rider 650 around Sydney?

I know some people might recommend using a phone mount instead, but I recently changed my phone and I’m worried about damaging the camera, so I'd still prefer to use to bike computer

I’m very very very new to cycling as an adult (44yo male, Gold Coast, riding on a crappy free Aldi bike) and always love looking out for independent companies/artists/creators etc, maybe it’s my background in punk rock and hardcore.

Just wondering if there are any decent indy bike stores in SEQLD outside of the usual corporate big guys like 99 Bikes, Giant, Trek etc who may also stock alt-brands such as Surly, Crust, Kona etc?

When money allows I’d like to upgrade to a gravel bike and hopefully buy from an independent store.

Hey guys I need help choosing a mountain bike, will be used to ride around the streets with my daughter but would also like it capable of doing some trails, I have a budget of around 1k can anyone give me some tips? I went to bikeforce and they recommended the trek marlin 5 or the Scott contrail 40. Have been looking them both up and lots of people have negative things about both.

Looking for suggestions for first bike. Sydney. 194cm male, budget ~2k (at absolute most).

Road bike, preferably could be a solid base for cycling training (as want to start training for triathlons over the next year or so). Have got a decent base for running/swimming already. Will upgrade down the line if needed, just looking for a starter.

Also, open to suggestions for at home bike rigs.
