Spring is here!

First day of Spring, the sky is blue, sun in shining, and cockatoos are humping on my balcony. They enjoyed postcoital snacks afterwards…

You know, I see hundreds of these cockys in my area.

Why have I never seen a baby one?

Because until they have their adult feathers, they can't fly and so can't leave their nest. So you never see the babies and the juveniles look a lot like their parents.

Oh, and they nest in hollows, often very high up, so you don't get babies safely falling in backyards as often as other birds with unstable twig on branch/lower to the ground nests.

When I was a teenager, my nanna lived with us for a few months before she passed. One morning we're sitting having breakfast and watching the Rainbow Lorikeets dancing around on the branches of the gum tree outside the window. Then Becky decided that she also wanted to smash.

As teens, we were fascinated and actively learning something new. M&D on the other hand were dying inside and trying to direct attention away because nanna was there. No idea if I thought it at the time but today, I'd be like "Dad, nanna produced four children, is in her 80s and isn't burdened with religious hangups. You're the one making this awkward!"

A while ago an old bloke told me cockies only eat with their left foot/hand/paw…on my walks I have noticed that this may just be true 🤔😀
