Prefix: total newb. Did as much research as possible to help my daughter. This is our first axolotl.

We’ve had her(?) for 4 months now. Not sure how old she is but she was only about 3” when we got her. She’s now almost 8.5” and we think she is really a he. What do you think?

Also, about a month ago, she really started to eat MUCH less and is now getting very picky. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? Water parameters are all good, temp always 66-68F. Her diet has been a mix of Axo wafers, and cut up night crawlers. Will love one one day and hate them the next.

Beginner Keeper Critique my tank

Post image
Upvotes

This is my 20 gal long axolotl tank for my very tiny bb. Yes - I know the minimum should be 40. This is not my axolotls forever home so please don’t get hung up on size. I bought the tank before I did proper research, but rest assured there is a 40 gallon in my future! Just waiting to buy a tank and start cycling. I have a sponge filter, airstone and hanging filter (fan for now until I can get a chiller).

What would you do better? Is it too cramped? It feels too cramped to me and I don’t know how to rearrange. I want to be a good axolotl owner so please don’t worry about hurting my feelings! I read that sand for a young axolotl isn’t good so I did the best I could without being able to plant things.

Okay, so I love my axolotl dearly. A part of looking after them is poop cleanup!

Well recently I was starting to get really worried as suddenly they seemed to not be pooping anymore. I thought maybe constipation.

I spoke to my wife, and she goes "oh I've cleaning it up before I go to bed"

It was such a relief. I think both my axolotl and wife are keepers 😉

The one in the back used to be really confident and playful, it started doing this a few weeks ago. Slowly gets close to me then immediately backs into its cave again. It eats just fine. As you can tell the other one is all sunshine and rainbows 😂

Discussion Should I just remove the sand

My 4 y/o lotl likes to do laps around his tank, and he is always pushing the sand into the center. Should I remove it altogether? (He's in a 40 gallon breeder)

I am aware that the small pebbles in the sand are not ideal. He is tong fed and has never ingested the sand/rocks, and every water change i try my best to get rid of more. Obviously if I get rid of the sand, the pebbles will go too 🙂 They are there because about 2 months ago I had a cycle crash, and needed beneficial bacteria. The only sand i had was the pebble sand. Anyways, I digress!

I just want to make him as comfortable as possible!

Beginner Keeper Need tank ideas

Basically, I’m currently cycling my tank for my sub-adult and already have a list of all plants available without substrate, which is what the tanks base will be, but I’m not sure how to construct it….
Therefore! Can you guys share your tanks? It might help inspire me for composition or just how things are placed, also, tips for a new tank owner would be useful.

General Care Advice İs it dangereous?

I recently purchased Tropical Supreme (Hi-Concentrate) water conditioner to treat tap water for my axolotl's tank. However, upon receiving it, I noticed it says "Uzdatniacz Wody z Aloesem" (Water conditioner with Aloe Vera) on the bottle.

I actually already dosed a few drops into the water. I've heard mixed opinions about this causes real harm or not?

Beginner Keeper New Axolotl Tank

New here. This is my first Axolotl tank but it's my 8th aquarium at the moment (severe case of MTS). I started off with Kiwi my GFP I got at a store near Chinatown. I originally got a 50 gallon tank since I wanted to eventually get a second. Then I was at Petco the other day and found out they had axolotls. I picked up Oreo (the melanoid?) and then 2 days later went back for Marshmallow (white one).

They were super skinny when I first got them but I think they are starting to gain some weight. I've been tweezer feeding them cut up pieces of red wigglers. I try to do it twice a day but I notice sometimes they'll suck up the pieces seems to chew on it, move it in and out of their mouths and then just spit it out. Is that normal?

I've got a bare bottom tank since they're about 4 inches but plan to add sand in a few months.

I have had Bibble since Sunday and it is now Tuesday and I haven’t seen any poop? They’re eating well and definitely have an appetite but I haven’t seen any poop and I’m a little concerned but also may just be an over concerned mother.
)Yes the tank is light we are waiting on black vinyl for the tank to arrive to darken it )
