McCann Framing

Has anyone else been pretty disappointed with McCanns framing ability? I know he's never been a defensive first catcher but man he is not doing his pitchers any favors with his framing.

It is entirely possible pitchers are missing the spots where he doesn't have an option to frame. But I feel like the more and more I see of him it just looks so sloppy on the receiving side.

I personally think that framing is becoming less relevant with ABS in place.

It is and it isn't. Framing still can get umpire to make wrong call and force batter to second guess himself with challenges.young players on a lot of teams aren't given the autonomy to challenge still.

You bring up a very good point. Especially with the young players and also early innings when it may not make sense to take the risk.

100%. In fact I argue maybe bad framing is more important now, getting a guy to burn the ABS challenges.

Shadowzone pitch, you’ve been getting all night, frame it poorly like he missed his spot, get the strike call and the batter challenges.

I don’t think the pitchers are doing themselves any favors either outside of Pfaadt and Rodriguez.

Can’t really be disappointed in a guy who has consistently been bad at something his entire career.

He’s a 36 year old catcher. His value is in calling the game & helping manage pitchers. He’s basically Tom Berenger in Major League.

So you like it when players flop? Framing is trying to trick an umpire into thinking a pitch is a strike when it isn’t. A ball shouldn’t be called a strike if it isn’t one, I don’t blame the catchers for doing it the same way I don’t blame basketball players for flopping. That doesn’t change the fact that I don’t like it

Never said I like it im just making a comparison playa. Fact of the matter is it's part of the game and there is an art to it.

I don’t disagree with you. That said, I still think it’s stupid haha. We need to get better at calling strikes strikes, not tricking umpires. Guy above me said “we absolutely live for it” which to me is an insane take
