[Kirschner] Jazz Chisholm Jr. on Will Flemming’s controversial comments about him: “I didn’t even know who that was until this morning. And I’m still not going to remember who he is after today.”
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7554254/2026/08/31/jazz-chisholm-jr-will-flemming-yankees-red-sox-steals/?unlocked_article_code=1.91A.q5px.dwl0qoD10HiH&source=emp_shared_article&smid=url-share-taOther Yankees’ responses:
Aaron Judge: “He needs to stay out of that and not be telling people to throw at players and injure players. That’s not what this game’s about. Not too happy hearing broadcasters talking about trying to injure or hurt players. He needs to clean that up.”
Carlos Rodón: “It’s stupid to talk about because you’re getting beat. Pitch better, This is not the pat-on-your-back league, and we’re going to be nice to you. Everyone’s coming to take the food off your table, and they’re coming to take your money. That’s how this game is played. There are no nice guys.”
Aaron Boone: “I’m an old-school baseball guy, I’ve been around doing this forever. I respect some of the unwritten rules. I really do. I think they’ve evolved and changed some. At the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s right for my team and try not to get so caught up in what the other team’s doing. I felt like we did the right thing.”

I really like what Rodon said. I have NEVER understood letting your foot off the gas to not “show up” the other team. This is the pros, there’s no participation trophy, and to many of these guys their job is on the line. Numbers matter for arbitration, for contracts, for not getting DFA’d. Why in the world should anyone ever take it easy???
8
u/SadNYSportsFan-11209 New York Yankees 6h ago
Yes I remember in 2011 or 2012 the Yankees came back down from 9-0 in Fenway lmao. One of the craziest experiences ever. 6 runs is enough 99% of the time but freak instances occur. Why tf would you ever risk such a thing. Yes it was the bottom of the 8th and the rally from that comeback years ago started earlier in the game. But you just never do know.
7
u/MenosElLso San Francisco Giants 5h ago
The Giants literally blew a 6 run lead in the ninth inning just last week.
3
u/CrypticBalcony Seattle Mariners 5h ago
I watched that one on NESN. It was the same day as Philip Humber’s perfect game. The broadcast cut out for a bit to show the end of his game.
2
u/Ok-Helicopter8500 New York Yankees 5h ago
And in a game like this, where your bullpen is taxed (they played a doubleheader the day before), you can guarantee not needing your high leverage relievers to warm up if you’re up 10 rather than 6. At 6, if one of your bad pitchers gives up a 3 run homer it’s a save situation!

Reminder to everyone that Raul Julia was dying of cancer, and specifically took that role because his children were huge Street Fighter fans so he wanted to leave them with something special when he was gone, and that "researching the role" meant sitting down with his children, playing the game with them, and spending as much time as he could with them in the time he had left.

To Boone's point, does the "unwritten rule" even apply at that point in the game? A six run deficit isn't impossible odds. Later in the game, sure, but when the comments were made it was way overboard imo.
3
u/SmoothhBull100 3h ago
As a Giants fan a 6 run deficit isn't impossible odds as we lost to the Reds who came back down 9-3 against us to win 10-9 just last week. I know we have the worse bullpen in the game, but any teams bullpen can have an off-day.
1
u/rawbface Philadelphia Phillies 3h ago

I mean your announcer is a dumbass. The unwritten rules are stupid and should never be followed and you shouldn't advocate for hitting someone and you shouldn't lead your apology with "everyone was mad at me so here's my apology". Honestly the dude should get banned from baseball just for saying anticompetitive thoughts.
1
u/TheBigShrimp Boston Red Sox 9h ago
Banned from baseball is insane, that's one of the most reddit comments I've ever seen.
Michael Kay never got banned from baseball for saying similar shit. I bet you and nobody else cared about that or even remembered it.
1
u/royalewithcheese51 Pittsburgh Pirates 8h ago
I'm not saying it about him saying someone should get hit. I find the idea that a baseball announcer would promote players not trying to win tantamount to betting on games, it's completely against the ethos of sport in general. The entire point is to try to win and entertain people, not to not try to win.
-21
u/rueiraV Boston Red Sox 17h ago
I agree what Flemming said was dumb and not his place as a broadcaster. I also find it a little strange that there seems to be a soft denial about pitchers attempting to hurt players for one reason or another. That is absolutely how the game is played and will continue to be how the game is played until the mlb rule makers crack down on it
12
u/ricki692 Atlanta Braves 15h ago

You see there is an unwritten rule to not steal and an unwritten rule that if you do steal the pitcher might retaliate and an unwritten rule that announcers can't encourage it.
