Rams made it to the NFC championship last year and won a championship this decade, Avalanche made it to the WCF last year and won a championship this decade, the Nuggets made the playoffs last year and won a championship this decade, Arsenal won the PL championship last year. In contrast the Angels haven’t made the playoffs or even had a winning season in over ten years.
Kroenke will almost immediately be a massive improvement in every single way over Moreno, and it is not even close.
66
u/Adu1tishXD Seattle Mariners 3h ago
Not only that, each of those teams were shit and rebuilding when he acquired them.
It’s mostly Josh Kroenke, his son, who I think just likes to win. He takes a pretty active hand in figuring out management and setting up solid front offices and support staffs.
17
u/ScienceNthingsNstuff Toronto Blue Jays 3h ago
That's true for all of them except the Avalanche. They won the Stanley Cup the year he bought them and made the playoffs 5 of the next 6 years. Their rebuild started like 8 years later
8
u/Adu1tishXD Seattle Mariners 2h ago
Yeah holy shit, I didn't realize he had them in 2010... He also bought the Rams and Nuggets then too... so maybe not as on the nose for those rebuilds lol
8
u/ScienceNthingsNstuff Toronto Blue Jays 2h ago
Yea he's owned the Avs and Nuggets forever lol. Im pretty sure the Nuggets were ass for the first few years for sure and I seem to remember the Rams being in a perpetual rebuild when he got them so I think it's mostly true. The Avs though were sick through the late 90s early 00s and he got them right at the peak

u/theb3arjevv 3h ago
I do think Moreno is a little overhated, as he did at least try to build something around Trout. A good pitcher dying and Rendon... becoming a corpse isn't really something you can survive.
But man, it has gotta feel so damn good to finally get a real owner. Kroenke has infuriating moments, but he usually wins and at least puts teams he isn't actively trying to move in positions to succeed.
12
u/w4y2n1rv4n4 New York Mets 3h ago
The hate is definitely not overdone imo, as someone who grew up supporting the team in the 2000s as a kid before I left Orange County (haven’t lived there since I was growing up)
2
u/theb3arjevv 2h ago
That's fair. I just think there's a world where Skaggs, Rendon, Trout, Sandoval, Ohtani, and even maybe Pujols actually pan out and make some noise.
There are many teams out there (looking at you, Bob) that just will not sign any players or try to win more than 85 games. Moreno at least tried a couple times. It's pathetic that that's not a given, but there are enough owners out there that absolutely will not spend a dime that he probably doesn't belong in that very bottom tier.
2
u/Angelsfan14 Anaheim Angels 1h ago
See the problem is, I can only imagine most players succeeded in spite of playing for this team, not because of it.
Though I only really say that because of the numerous times Arte seeming refused to spend money in the right places. And I'm not just talking about the construction of the roster, I'm talking about the stupid AC not working for the team gym, making Albert pay for that special treadmill or whatever it was for his plantar fascitis (which could have been used for other players of Arte bought it for the team), and then the Angels being one of the last teams to give their minor league players housing, etc etc.
He spent money on the big flashy signings. Not where it mattered. So yes, he might not seem like a bad owner to some people, at least on the surface, but once you dig a bit deeper, it becomes apparent just how bad of an owner he was. At least he wasn't John Fisher bad though.
1
u/Veserius Jackie Robinson 28m ago
Exactly, penny pinching on coaching, player health/fitness/nutrition, etc. means you'll never have sustained success because you can't make players better in any systematic way.
1
u/wlanr150 New York Mets 1h ago
When I moved to LA 20 years ago, the Angels were the well run team in a good position and the Dodgers were unstable even before the divorce/bankruptcy. Moreno reversed that and then some. Kroenke is a huge upgrade or at least it sure looks that way.
5
u/ColaBottleBaby Anaheim Angels 2h ago
I appreciate the fact that Arte committed to keeping baseball affordable in SoCal up until he sold, not much more than that though. Those golden years in the early to mid 2000s were just riding the wave of Stoneman and he completely tanked the entire organization by being a cheap fuck with shit that matters like development
6
u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 2h ago
Also Arte is not only just a loser, but a bad owner who meddles in the team affairs constantly for no reason. Scuttling trades because "they took too long/disrespected me", not trading anybody because they don't want to look bad, etc.
17
u/Xno_Kappa New York Yankees 3h ago
The Kroenke family are a bunch of assholes, but their teams are competently ran and actually win championships.
This is absolutely better for Angels fans.

1

Maybe when he first bought the team because he wasn’t injecting money, but when they got controlling stake that’s when he started investing and dominating. I reckon more fans like him than don’t. Those that don’t just don’t like an American owning them
2
u/mczerniewski 1h ago
He purposefully tanked attendance in St. Louis before lying the team out of town.
Arsenal fans primarily hate him for putting a lot of debt on the club and the whole European Super League mess.
11
u/NatrixHasYou Los Angeles Angels 3h ago
I get it, I live here, but as an Arsenal supporter, the Kronke's have backed the team and Arteta, and have built one of the single best teams in Europe as a result.
I can't seem them letting the Angels continue to flounder and decay when they know how to rebuild a franchise and make it successful.

I do wonder if we’re in a bit of a bubble with sports team valuations.
