Ich weiß ,dass Berner Sennen Mischlinge nicht von allen gerne gesehen werden, aber ich wollte sie gerne mal vorstellen. Sie ist jetzt ca 17 Monate alt , sie hat mit 8 Monaten ein neues zu Hause gesucht und da mein vorhergehender Hund Blue unerwartet an einer Lungenembolie gestorben ist ,habe ich sie zu mir genommen. Sie ist ein großes Mädchen sie hat eine Schulterhöhe von ca 72 ,73 cm und wiegt ca 41 Kilo. Sie hat ein ziemlichen Dickkopf schnelle Spaziergänge sind oft unmöglich außer in der Dämmerung. Besonders wenn sie einen anderen Weg gehen will Schleich sie hinterher ,bleibt oft stehen , setzt sich hin und wartet auf ein Leckerli damit sie schneller läuft. Wenn es nach ihr geht würde sie auch jeden Menschen begrüßen und gestreichelt werden. Wo sie zu mir kam war ein Spaziergang kaum möglich sie stand mehr als sie gelaufen ist. Das ist aber schon viel besser geworden .

Hello all. So obviously in this sub we are no stranger to back/hip problems.

Booker is 8, and we have been steadily prepping/treating his arthritis since about 5-6. Recently though, he had a major surgery to remove a blockage in his intestine. They cut my poor boy from sternum to groin and massaged it out. Prior to this, he had his minor problems with back/hip pain.

Since the surgery though, things have been progressively worse. A couple weeks after we had our first incident of him simply not standing up. It resolved within a day, and the vet recommended more Gabepentin. We have him on a slew of meds to combat and help with pain.

This is my mother’s dog, yet mine from when I lived here. He’s my boy no matter where he lives, but now i’m worried. I got home from vacation early and came into check on him, and he’s being extremely abnormal. Not moving up for food, struggling to even stand/shift while laying, and when he does stand up he has a major limp in his front left leg now. Sometime ago he developed an “arch” in his back, along with stiffer back legs and struggling to go up stairs. He worked with it, although it clearly hurt him.

Seeing him like this devastates me, and i’m not sure what to do. It’s not my dog, but I know he’s in pain. A lot of it. This boy would tear a hole through a cement wall to get a treat, yet now he won’t even stand to grab it.

Any advice would be much appreciated here. I’m struggling extremely hard, and i’m thinking of the worst.

Is this just the puppy coat or will it stay?

I have a 5 month old Bernese Mountain Dog. His front left elbow seems a little wobbly and looks like it moves inward/outward sometimes (the second video clip). His gait is slightly affected by it but he doesn’t seem to be in any pain. He gets up and lays down just fine, I cant help but worry. Do y’all see any noticeable issues or am I just overthinking? Could this just be part joint development? What do obvious signs of elbow dysplasia look like?

We currently have a 1½-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog named Fozzie, and he is THE BEST. He’s a big goofball, gets along with everyone, doesn’t know how big he is, and is just SUCH a love.
We’re thinking about rescuing a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, hopefully if we’re picked at the end of October. I’m having a bit of worry about Fozzie having to share our attention. Fozzie LOVES us, and he loves being with us and getting all the pets and love. (He does not suffer from separation anxiety, thank goodness!)
I worry that with a puppy, Fozzie might feel left out a little bit… but I do think he’d also love having a sibling to play with. I’ve heard that Bernese Mountain Dogs like other dogs, but they LOVE other Bernese Mountain Dogs!
I was wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with this!

Hi all! I recently took in a 1.5 year old female Bernese and was talking to my aunt about bloat (they have English mastiffs). Has anyone had experience with bloat or knowledge with Bernese? Stressed me out a bit with trying to navigate strenuous exercise around feeding times with a high energy pup. 😅 I work full time so just trying to get a schedule under the belt.

The dangers of corn cobs are very expensive. We paid $700 August 3rd to do an emergency procedure when we realized she stole the corn cob. Friday we found out that one piece had hung around and was now causing a bowel obstruction that required surgery. 10 to 14 days of post care is no rough play, no jumping, no running. Now I have to survive with an 8 month old going through a disobedient stubborn phase of biting jumping and laying down when refusing to go inside. We usually handle this with a lot of activity and toys she can work out her energy and frustration with. Now that we can't do that for 14 days I am wondering how I'm going to survive this. I can't just let her jump and bite because she's not allowed to jump. I can't just let her bite because then I will have a dog I can't stand in 14 days so I don't want her to end up spoiled. How do you convince a puppy to be relaxed and gentle for the next 10 to 14 days when what they really want to do is run and jump and bite?

Looking for some advice. Our 1.5 year old berner, bear (rehomed at 13 weeks) is a boy full of bounce, love, goof and eager to please.

He’s very sweet and innocent, loves all dogs, although most now seem to have a go at him (still in tact) he lives for his walks

My concern is he seems bored - almost down when at home. We walk him once a day given the breed and his body is still developing, as soon as we get home he seems to just lie at the front door almost waiting for the next walk.

He gets separation anxiety, is quite a wimp and scares easily, even the slightest bit of trying to discipline him if he chews or pulls on leash he gets upset. His chewing is terrible, yet he has toys inside, he just seems to sit at the front door and wait for the next walk, when we do take him out he bolts out the door and looks like he’s going to explode with excitement. He’s walked an hour a day and plays with us in the garden most nights.

He’s allowed in most rooms of the house and knows which ones to avoid.

I guess what I’m asking is, being at home does he hate it and despite being told to keep walks to an hour a day by our vet, given his age would an additional 1 hour a day or 45 mins make that much of a difference. He just seems a little under stimulated and I wonder having a 4 year old (they are best friends) and a 6 month old, he feels a little left out, despite us usually taking him with us everywhere.

Any thoughts on walks and what the hell do we do to stop the chewing. Our kitchen chairs are annihilated, he lies beside them at night instead of in his bed and just chows down, same if we leave him in the house

I have a 5 lb BMD. His name is Poppy. Poppy seems to like walking with a leash more than a harness. Wondering if it’s because of his pulling breed? Does anyone else notice this. I feel bad using a leash but he will not move with a harness and I find I pull the leash very little, he simply walks obediently with it. ??

Does anyone have experience rescuing a dog through Berner Inc? I submitted an application for adoption, but have not heard from anyone in a couple of weeks and I was unsure what their process looks like.
Are there other rescues in New England that others suggest I look at?

I never knew we needed protection from all those scary trees and bushes in our yard until Pocket let us know. I don't know how we survived without her all these years.

So, our 19-month-old boy, Grover Bear, is having issues, but we're now wondering if we didn't cause it all...

When we adopted him 2 months ago, he was on Purina Puppy Chow. There was enough food to last about 3 weeks, and we slowly weaned him off of that, and onto Costco Lamb & Rice. A bit later, he developed VERY loose, horrible smelling poops. So, we kept him on the Costco Lamb & Rice, but added Bernie's Perfect Poops to his diet. And while it firmed up his poop, he's only wanting to poop in the house now. He has full access to the back yard, and we take him out constantly. We take his food bowl up at about 7 or so, so there's no grazing in the night.

About a week ago, we picked up one of those large decorative kennels for him and started working on making it his safe space, with the idea that if we kenneled him at night, we could avoid all of his poops overnight in the house.

Nope. My wife woke up @ 2 this morning (due to the smell), and he'd gone not once, but FOUR times. All over his new cushion and toys. Not a fun evening for her.

Can it all be due to the food we're feeding him? Or is this something we should talk to a vet about? Other than this issue, he's perfect. Super loving, energetic, smart (learned Kennel after literally one time telling him!!).

Any help would be appreciated, we're kind of losing our s*** here, no pun intended. ;)

Edit - Wife wanted me to make sure y'all know that he gets long walks (about 2 miles), every morning and night. We'd take him during the day too, but it's been over 100°F for the last week. :(

Edit #2 - Knock on wood, but the Purina Pro Plan seems to be working. No accidents in the house for the last two nights. Normal poops outside!! Fingers crossed!!

About two weeks ago, we received a difficult diagnosis for our berner, Lloyd (named after Jim Carey’s character in our favorite movie “Dumb and Dumber.” This dog was anything but dumb). It came on him suddenly and the doc indicated that it would be aggressive. He dropped about 30 lbs for no apparent reason in just a matter of weeks (his normal weight was around 130 lbs) and he slowed down physically. He was diagnosed with lymphoma.

We took the palliative approach with prednisone as there is not any vet oncologists anywhere close to us, plus the fact that the doc indicated that it was aggressive. We hoped the prednisone would give us a month or two. It gave us two weeks. This morning he was showing signs of deteriorating (nose bleeds, trouble breathing, etc) so we took him to the vet to get checked out. He lost 7 more lbs in two weeks despite eating just about as much as he wanted - steaks and chicken at first, then it became hard for him to swallow solid food so we switched to soft dog food and easy to swallow treats. Mentally he seemed to be all there, but physically we were unsure if he was in any pain. They seem to hide that kind of stuff well (my in-laws have two berners). I don’t think he was in pain but he definitely was not comfortable. Based on the docs advice and based on how aggressive this cancer is, we made the difficult decision to have him put to sleep. He was 5 years and 10 months old to the day.

These dogs love big and we loved him big.

Annie is 2 years old and our first Berner. She’s also our first and only dog of many that doesn’t immediately scarf down her food as soon as we set it down. It started about a month ago but has been intermittent. As soon as I decide to make a vet appointment she starts eating normally again. Most days she’ll eat her food a few hours later but today she hasn’t eaten her breakfast yet. We’ve tried different bowls, different locations. Food hasn’t changed. No vomiting or diarrhea, pooping fine. Still playful and active and doesn’t seem to be losing weight. Is this a berner thing where they self regulate or should I just pull the trigger and take her to the vet?
