Ready lets go
One of the more pleasant outings on the album. It feels really warm like the sun hitting your skin in the morning. I also get massive “computer startup” vibes from this one with the droning background noises. Like a computer getting hot as it turns on.
Music is Math
This one reminds me of being in my high school library or science class. The start definitely is more reminiscent of this with those cold and uncomfortable synths. It’s like trying to wrap your head around a really hard concept. Then the second half comes in and things change. Everything starts to deteriorate like a dream gone bad with that foreboding outro.
Beware the friendly stranger
Creepy in a really secular way unlike the rest of the album. The title influences my perception of course but it definitely flares up images of predators. Like a voyeur creeping around a neighborhood in autumn. Terrible childhood memories.
Gyroscope
Extremely violent and confrontational. Makes me think of running from a monster in a maze or labyrinth. Probably a Greek monster like a Minotaur or maybe some kind of Manticore or Lamassu. Has a very distinct near eastern vibe with the reversed guitars. Black and indoors too like I’m a mile underground.
Dandelion
Just watching underwater lava flows and geothermal energy. Like watching the boiling water bubble up from the ocean floor with Giant tube worms nearby. Obviously the narration helps with this one.
Sunshine Recorder
Being outside alone and lost on a really hot summer day. Dry grass everywhere and just the sense of the day progressing. As the song goes on it feels more and more nauseous and miserable.
In the Annexe
Horrible. It’s being locked in a dusty old attic where the windows are frosted over and there’s people outside. The sun is blasting through a sunroof so you can see the dust particles hanging in the air. There’s weird old shit in the attic that your mind can’t properly make out. The song also has a really malnourished energy as well.
Julie and Candy
Sleazy and gross. It’s like touching pink slightly crusty shag carpet. Uneasy but punctuated with some real nice comfort. I’d also compare it to being at a house party where you're dissociating and want to leave.
Smallest Weird Number
This song is composed of 2 parts. The first is waking up to the sunrise in the morning, nothing big. The second part is seeing an old television program through a shitty old CRT television. It’s like the title screen of a show which is panning over a dense forest glade which is very clearly fake and made of plastic, foam and other artificial materials. The footage is fuzzy and there’s a twinkling effect on screen. Things get warped and garbled periodically. Unsettling.
1969
Early night probably around 8:00 or 8:30. there’s a little sliver of blue daylight left but it’s on the horizon. Driving through some semi-rural roads and just the weird feeling of spooky shit going down. It’s like seeing things in your rear view mirror but looking again and they aren’t there. It’s the transition into the darker and more spiritual second half of the album.
Energy Warning
Irritating. The most nothing song on the whole album.
Beach at Redpoint
Maybe my favorite song on the album. Super brooding and moody. It reminds me of a rocky beach in England or Canada where there are old rusted coastal artillery cannons and the sky is overcast. The wind blows like crazy and the waves crash hard. Memories of people you never knew.
Opening the mouth
Laying down on a slab in ancient Egypt inside someone's home. You could be alive or dead, it doesn’t matter. There’s some physician or embalmer there who uses tools to remove your brain through your nose as a bunch of spirits and negative energy are released from you. Honestly a relaxing song.
Alpha and Omega
Seeing the earth from orbit and then zooming in to get a ground view of life evolving and moving on the prehistoric plains of Africa. Just early hominins running around and doing stuff.
I saw drones
Silver floating spheres rapidly emerge from the dark in a bedroom. They fly around and assault the senses. The evil third act of the album starts here.
Devil is in the details
Being trapped or held down like sleep paralysis. There are invertebrates swarming everywhere. I’m going to say they’re prawns or something like that. There’s a baby. Or maybe you are the baby. Anyways it’s the worst things have gotten yet.
A is to B as B is to C
This song has some serious dark energy. It’s so layered that it’s hard to come up with a definitive image for it. I’d say it’s similar to music is math in that it’s like a dream gone wrong. Terrifying without anything tangible.
Over the Horizon Radar
The last reprieve of the album. Looking out at the horizon on a dry winter day as the sun comes up. It’s like looking back at the last authentic taste of the real world before the album descends to hell.
Dawn Chorus
Like being pulled further and further into a bright, colorful and bold light. This song has the same color palette as the album cover. Feels decadent and ecstatic tbh like an orgy. Also a bit royal too? Has a Rococo feel. The orchestral sounds and moaning definitely contribute to this
Diving Station
Sitting down and falling deep into darkness as the world around you is ground away. It’s like the last semblance of the material world is getting crushed up into a massive black hole.
You could feel the sky
Unimaginably sinister tbh. Being a forest full of pine trees with a blood red sky. The sky is pressing on your mind. The stretching tearing sound is your fingers pressed against the sky like fabric. There’s a clearing in the forest with a pagan ritual. The crossed legged goat devil is there. You know which one I’m talking about.
Corsair
Coming out the other side of the album. It’s like flying through clouds but everything is kind of hazy and there’s an empty sense of relief.
Magic Window
No noise but cheeky.
What does everyone else think?
