John Boat Cover

I’ve got a 14ft flat bottom john boat that I fixed up last summer. Over the winter I tried covering it with a large tarp which had holes ripped through it from wear (i’m guessing animals and weather) and a cheap walmart boat cover that also ripped fairly easily.

I’m looking for recommendations on brands or specific covers for a boat that size that I won’t have to worry about ripping through like I did those other two options. Also don’t want to break the bank.

Please let me know, thanks !

How accurate does one have to be when measuring portlights for replacement?

I'm intimidated by this job, because I'm worried I'll get the old one off and the new one won't fit and then I'll be trying to scramble to find one that fits and get it delivered while my portlight is wide open, it's going to get colder, and the vampires can get in.

So yeah, I have a 1985 Hunter. They were made using Gray Enterprises portlights.

The website from which I can order new replacements says to measure the outside of the lens from side to side to determine its size. https://shop.sailboatowners.com/gray.php

I did so, and I get 14 and 13/16ths inches (possibly 7/8ths of an inch)

When I look up the sizes (also on the above link) I see "414" which is Lens dimensions 14-1/2 inch which is smaller, or "715" Lens dimensions 15-5/8 inch which is larger.

The size "715" goes into 8ths of an inch (others go to the 16th), so it's not like the 14 1/2 inch was just a rough estimate. I'm also assuming that they get down to the 16ths because they don't allow much wiggle room.

But having never done this, does that mean I need to buy a larger size and dremel the openings to fit a 15 5/8ths " portlight? Or can I buy one that is slightly smaller by 5/16ths of an inch and it won't have a gap through which the vampires can get in?

Or should I switch brands to one that will fit without having to do fiberglass surgery?

This boat travels from the city center to a park where the aquarium is where you can enjoy a nice walk or whatever you want. Charming little boat.

50hp Evinrude

Just bought a duck boat from a guy with a 50hp evinrude on it, he said it ran and had a video of it but when I took it to rhe lake it started for like 3 seconds and then died. It cranks very well but it seemed like gas was dripping out from underneath the carb somewhere. Any ideas? Im not the greatest with boat motors.

Spotted this interesting boat when we were pulling into Port of Kingston Marina in Puget Sound. Have never seen one like this. Not a sloop, ketch, yawl, or cat rigged sailboat.

I haven't taken a holiday in 3 years. My dream is a boat. Banks say no

I’m 42 and I work hard every single day. I don’t drink.. I don’t smoke and I haven’t taken a holiday in 3 years

My one escape is the water and I dream of owning a boat. Nothing fancy, just a small one. Something to get out on the weekends

I went to my bank and I asked for a loan. They said no. They said a boat is not a necessity. They said they only fund things like homes and cars. They said my deposit was only 15%, and that’s not enough for a toy

I felt like I was being judged. Like my dream wasn’t legitimate

I started looking for options. I came across Financfy online. They have loans specifically for boats. They talk about lower deposits. Longer terms.

But is this just a regular personal loan dressed up as a boat loan? Is the interest rate higher? Are there hidden fees? Or are the terms actually different for recreational vehicles?

I don’t want to get tricked into a bad deal. But I also don’t want to wait another year. I’ve been waiting long enough

Has anyone taken out a boat loan through an online platform? Was it better than a personal loan? Was it worth it, or should I just keep saving?

I’m confused. I want to do this right. But I’m tired of waiting. Any advice from people who’ve been through this would help. I’m ready to get on the water. I just need to figure out how

Trailer Fitment

I’ve got a 97 SeaRay 250 DA and the trailer it’s on does not pull well at all. Anything much over 45MPH it starts to sway. I’m pretty sure that it’s got too much weight past the axels. How many feet of this boat is acceptable to be past the rear axels? I can move the winch stand forward by maybe a foot.

I got a 1989 Bass Tracker 17 pro that I’ve had for a few years. Bought it from a mutual friend back in 2022 i believe from a mutual friend. Needed a little bit of work done to it but nothing major and ended up buying it for $2500. Now 3 years later I’m looking into getting a new G3 Gator Tough with a jet on it. I fish a lot of river so a jet would be awesome. Just looking to find a price to set this at, I’m thinking around $4000 is a good starting point. What do yall think?
(Everything works as should, brand new starter and trolling motor battery, new livewell pump and bilge pump this past spring)

Late 70's Lund, 14' tiller. I am cleaning it up and modernizing some things, this is the middle bench. I want to put batteries here, would removing this make a difference? I had no idea it was in there. Thanks.

Should I repower

I took my boat to a shop and they did a compression test and got 125, 126, 127, and 115. The mechanic claims that since the last cylinder was off by 11-12 psi that it’s not worth trying to fix why my motor is stalling while idling. Would you not bothering paying them to go through the motor? They’ve already told me 3 times how much a new motor, steering cables, controls, and a prop costs including installation.

Experience with SmoothThrottle (Outboard Retailer)

I am shopping for a 25hp 4-stroke outboard and keep seeing this website https://smooththrottle.com/ pop up on google listings. It appears to be a thorough used catalog with a Marina Del Ray address but Charleston information in their about us page origin story. Anyone bought from them before? Know this operation? Had good / bad experience to report?

Does anyone have any alternatives to mounting accessories to aluminum boat that doesn’t have t rail? 2022 Alweld Marsh 16/48

Bought the boat used so the previous owner has a few things screwed in but I want to avoid adding anymore holes. I’ve look at some clamp style attachment points online but everything looks like plastic junk. Every boating website I look at caters to boats with the t rail system also.
