Material Specialist

Hello,

I need some insight on this specific job. I went to a career fair and I asked if they had anything with supply chain management because I have a degree in business. The recruiter offered me a Material Specialist position. Does anyone know if its worth going into this? Can i grow within the company or will I be stuck there? What do they actually do and is this actually in supply chain?

(I need help because I don't want to risk leaving my current job for a pay cut and no growth.)

Thats the most common job and the first to go. All you do is walk parts around the buildings.

Growth is whatever youre willing to take the time to learn and move into, after 18 months in your current role.

That’s what I thought at my current job but instead it was a dead end job n I’m just lucky I haven’t gotten laid off

If you have a degree I’d wait for something more in line with it. Things will open up next year. I’d avoid the first opportunity just to get a foot in the door. You’re better off getting into a salary position than an hrly position to move around.

I have one but I want to do something in my degree but not my concentration anymore

It’s a great entry level job but often the hardest to get because the qualifications are so low. I know many who have come in through this job and moved on to great careers. Material specialists usually just move material around the facility (at least where I am at) or kit parts etc. you can definitely grow into other roles.

If you take the job…. Get a couple degrees while waiting; get RSU’s. Once you max out you can start looking at non-IAM jobs in supply if you want.

Get more, get those RSU’s. I bought my wife’s truck brand new with my RSU’s. You can invest them, buy a home (down payment), etc

That’s my role. I love it. Super easy, low stress job. Easy to move up to a different role, just turn on green lights or become a temp manager.

Pay cut isn’t great but I’m 6 months in and my pay has gone up dramatically

If you have a degree you’re most likely going to want to look for a Procurement Agent position. What area are you in? This is a great way to get in the door but it is more warehouse and parts management, issuing parts and moving parts, receiving.

I work for the county and it has nothing with what I majored in (infosystems and marketing) and I want to get into supply chain management.

If it’s the same position I’m familiar with, they need a lot of help and bodies. There is absolutely room for growth if you have the ability to shine.
Yes a great entry level and the ability to network since you would be working with many different areas throughout the business.
