It can be sci-fi, fantasy, classic, whatever. But the number one reason I give up on a book is because the artist doesn’t demonstrate a mastery of prose.

I love language. I love character development. I like deep worldbuilding, but it can’t be the chief selling point over prose. Simply send me recommendations where the prose and character work moved you.

Lolita (please stick with me here) is an incredible novel because Nabokov uses beautiful prose as a means to examine a horrifically ugly situation. The prose is part of the character, and it’s brilliant.

There is NOTHING wrong with reading for formulaic entertainment, escapism, or any other reason that isn’t my own. And a hacky B-movie style sci-fi novel is absolutely capable of having stellar character work or magnificent prose.

I’m not saying, “Only send me recommendations for books that smell their own farts on the NYT best seller list.” I’m just saying, if the prose stuck with you and the character arch rocked you in one way or another, please send it my way!

No happy ending, no science will save the day, no utopia, just bleak realism with drought, famine, wildfires, chaos, and the true nature of humans.

I am interested in any fiction genre. I don't want non-fiction and i'm not looking for any self help type book. What I am envisioning is a novel where the protagonist confronts this reality or such!

My niece is 13 and turns 14 in a few months. She is starting to display interest in tv shows that have teenage romance as a prominent part of the story.

I am having trouble locating any interesting books that would have the same feel. Mainly, age appropriate romance…no spice. Basically, any physical contact needs to remain above the belt.

I am hoping you may have some suggestions! Please help me remain the cool aunt another day!

Hello! I'm sure this question may have been asked by somebody a while ago but I've got a long term goal of reading a book based in, about, or by an author from every country.

If anyone has any suggestions for any country at all I'd love to hear them. I'd especially appreciate books from lesser known countries.

I enjoy classics and particularly meaningful books, often relating to politics or real-world issues. Having said that, I'm open to pretty much anything. Fiction or non-fiction, any genre. My main condition is just that I want each book to be primarily set in that specific country or have a strong link to it.

I love bleak small town life with a ton of human connectedness. Ohio by Stephen Markley really gave me my tiny hometown vibes with a bunch of fucked up kids who are now adults. I started Empire Falls from Richard Russo awhile back and I’m finding it rather boring. Demon Copperhead really gained my interest due to the splash of why the way things are and how opioids obliterated an impoverished population. Sad and interesting. I grew up in a very small town in Wyoming so I guess I’m finding some sort of comfort in being safe and sober from there. So if anybody has any recs in that arena I would be grateful. Thank you!

I've spent the last year and a half reading all sorts of books that I've had on my TBR for years. All were books that I knew, and where I was aware of the general story or the authors style. I have a lot more to read on my TBR but I want a palate cleanser, something I can pick up with no knowledge of and just let it carry me away.

I’m currently in the process of reading Wings of Fire ever since I discovered that the author was formally part of the original writing group under the pen name of Erin Hunter for the Warriors series.

But I have been curious about reading other books that involve dragons, especially if it does not involve riding them (because it’s become too common for dragons to be reduced to flying steads in most modern fantasy books that involve dragons).

While villainous dragons like Smaug is neat, what I really love is when dragons are treated like characters like Falkor from The Neverending Story or The Great Red Dragon from Bone. Main roles, side roles, I don’t mind. I just really want to see dragons treated as characters again.

I want a book that goes into what daily like was like in the 1970s in Europe and/or America. I’d like a book that is shorter. Like around 100 pages. I’d like something that covers a lot about that time.

Also I’d like something short stories or classics written in 1970 - romantic themes stories if possible.

Just finished Loveless by Alice Oseman, and while enjoyable, I’m looking for something a little different. I want to find a fiction book with (preferrably) a female MC who has previously been in relationships with men and women, and it explores her journey to coming out as aspec. I know this is kind of specific but I’m hoping there’s something like this that’s actually good as well.

I am turning 19 soon, i have no one to celebrate my birthday with and i really want sushi so my plan is to fight my anxiety, go to a sushi restaurant alone and just read a book for 5 hours, give me book suggestions that i might relate to, like just feel good fictional books. thank you so much :)

I finished the Knives Out trilogy and I need to read more murder mystery novels,at the moment I've read a lot of the novels by Agatha Christie (Murder on The Orient Express,And Then There were None,Murder on the Nile and a lot more) and A Study in Red by A.C.Doyle.

I specifically want something with similar vibes of the movies like a group of suspects,a genius detective and good plotwists.

I loved *Shadow Tag* when i read it all those years ago, and have been meaning to return to Erdrich's writing for quite sometime. Thing is, many of her novels are tied into one or two series. This has made it difficult for me to choose another of her books.

I have points for a free book of $5 or less on a used book site and want to go Erdrich on it. I have options as long as I keep the books in my cart until the price is dropped below 5.

So in other words, can i read her books out of order? Looks like the stories are all separate, but share characters and themes. Im guessing then that it is not a series in the same way ACOTAR is?

Can anyone suggest light hearted romance comedy book THAT IS NOT in 1st POV? I'm sorry for all the authors but I can't stand reading 1st POV at all and the titles I found are mostly written in 1st POV. I hope someone can suggest me what to read T^T

I'm looking for a book about American Urban Legends. I've tried multiple bookstores, but no joy. The closest anyone seems to have for me are haunted places or ufo's.

Don't get me wrong, both of those are cool and I'd love to dive into them, but I'm specifically looking for Urban Legends.
