Discussion what did breastfeeding at 10.5 months look like for you?

our girl is about 10.5 months old and we've been exclusively breastfeeding since birth (thankfully with relative ease) and I'm just curious what this stage of breastfeeding looked like to you all? i'm surrounded by folks who pumped, formula fed, or weaned earlier and who are on the sleep train train, so my local examples of life/schedule/ritual is a little funky. my goal is to Bf until 2 years or when she weans naturally.

we do about two "meals" (read: food play time) a day, but girlie is still nursing to sleep, throughout the night when she wakes/is in bed next to me, and probably another 4-5 times a day when fussy.

we dropped down to two naps a few weeks ago on a semi regular schedule, but she's been a party princess at night and staying up until 8 ish I think because of teething and her recent over the air updates (read: standing and screeching).

i just feel a lot of anxiety about how i "should" be introducing more limits around feeds and schedule.

Celebration! I did it

My LO is 13 months old. Yesterday was my last day of breastfeeding. I cannot believe my body nourished her for 9 months in the womb and then 13 months outside of the womb. It’s mind blowing and so amazing what our bodies can do!!! ❤️❤️

Encouragement/Solidarity Help me because I’m going to give up

I don’t know if my baby is cluster feeding or what, but he has basically been latched to me for almost 2 hours and he roots and cries every time I try and put him down.

my breasts feel emptier and I’ve heard him swallowing during the feed, and he will un latch himself just to latch again in 10 minutes, okay. maybe more like 30 but still. it’s exhausting. he’s 4 days old, and my mature milk has fully come in. I just don’t know what to do!

I don’t know how tell if this is normal or not. I pumped with my first and don’t really remember having issues with this constant feedin but maybe I did and I’m just forgetting? any advice is welcome. LCs are expensive but I could make an appointment.

Support Needed Baby has dropped night feed

Baby is 8 months old and for the last week, has been fairly inconsistent about wanting a night feed. The last 2 nights, we've done no feed before bed at all.

Is this common around this age?

Baby has a full feed for breakfast, then food, nap, breastmilk after nap, lunch, then has 2nd nap of the day, then breastfeeds, and then dinner. And then nothing until the following morning. So effectively I'm going from approximately 5pm until 7am the following day without breastfeeding.

I have pumped the last few nights and get anything from 1-4oz but I'm finding this so difficult to cope with no longer having a feed before bed.

I know I should be glad as it makes things easier in some respects, but it's something I was not expecting so soon and I feel so sad!

Any advice appreciated.

Newborn Troubleshooting Low weight at 6 weeks

Hi all! My lo’s birth weight was 3.015kg and was at 2.68kg a week later. He had jaundice with high billirubin levels. 10 days from birth he was at 2.8kg. He’s 6 weeks now and he weighs 3.4kg.
He’s a breast fed baby.
I used to breast feed him and then top him up with expressed milk post nursing. I’ve also given him formula here and there when I haven’t been able to pump/Express.

Now I’m doubting my milk and I keep wondering if he has enough milk from me. So I pumped and gave him milk. I would get 60ml and he too just drank around that much. It’s only the last couple of days where he has been drinking 70ml.

He drinks every 2.5-3 hours during the day and 3-4 at night. But there have been nights where he has slept for long stretches and tonight he slept for 5.5 hours!! He also had his vaccination today.

Questions:
1. How can I get him to increase his weight? My doc suggested to feed him for 10-15 per side and if be still wants to drink give him Expressed milk or formula.
2. How often should I feed him? Every 2-3 hours or on demand feed?
And will all going long stretches affect my milk supply?
3. Is breast milk enough or should I add formula feeds ?

I’m worried about his slow weight gain. Please help.

Encouragement/Solidarity My 4 year old said she hates me breastfeeding

As the title says - my 4 year old daughter said she hates me breastfeeding which really broke my heart…
I suspect it’s how much time it takes up although when I asked her she said “I don’t want anyone to see your boobies!” 🙈

My almost 5 month old is still feeding pretty much every 1.5 hours and cluster feeds a lot in the late afternoon / into the evening. My eldest is starting school settle sessions next week and then full time the week after. I’m conscious this will be a big shift for her and her time with me will become that witching hour period.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can give time to my 4 year old whilst still breastfeeding my baby? I don’t respond well to pumping and never have so if I need to give a bottle it tends to have to be formula or a mixed bottle as on occasion I have given a bottle to be able to focus on my 4 year old.

Just feeling disheartened by this comment as it’s not the first time she has said it 💔

Troubleshooting/Tips My 8-month old uses my boob as a dummy/for comfort

My LO is just over 8 months old and constantly uses my boob as a dummy to soothe and fall asleep.

We co-sleep and contact nap (the only other way he falls asleep is in the pram) and he always needs to latch in order to fall asleep. Once fully asleep he sometimes unlatches and rolls into his own space.

However, he's recently been teething and needs my boob even more, if I try and unlatch when he's fallen asleep he panics and starts to wake up! I have tried dummies (he is happy to play with them when awake) but he will never accept one when he is tired or falling asleep. I have also tried waiting and slowly moving away but unless he unlatches on his own terms, he wakes up.

I want to slowly transition away from this so he can sleep more independently/ sooth himself - especially as he will start nursery at 1 year.

I've been avoiding doing anything as I don't want to disrupt his naps/sleep but I'm starting to worry he will always use me as a dummy!

(Not sure if it's relevant but he has started weaning but still does a couple of night feeds and a few smaller feeds in the day).

Weaning 9 Month Old Drinking Less Milk

I was concerned because my 9.5 month old has seemingly stopped showing any interest in nursing in the morning and before bed. He will very briefly feed and then get distracted and refuse any more. He is still drinking his two 7 oz bottles at daycare in full. He loves solids, eating breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack at daycare, and some sort of small dinner when he gets home. I reached out to my pediatrician because I want to be sure he's getting what he needs in terms of milk and this is what she said to me:

"A lot of babies naturally start weaning off milk as they approach one and eat more solids. I'd say continue to offer milk before foods, when he is one we will offer foods first and milk as a supplement. You can offer water between meals. It's ok to follow his interest in solids, offering healthy fats like full fat yogurt, avocado, peanut butter. The bottles he takes at daycare are sufficient."

I wanted to share in case anyone else is in the same boat and needed some reassurance.

I would also love to hear what self-weaning looked like for your baby and around what age!

Pumping Oxytocin is wild

I was getting my toddler ready for preschool this morning while wearing a hakaa to relieve some engorgement, before the baby woke up. Usually the milk just trickles out into the hakaa. As soon as I was sitting near my toddler (who I previously breastfed), the milk came flowing out and the hakaa filled up so fast!

My son turned 1 in August and we are slowly weaning. My goal was to make it to a year and we did it! I wouldn't have been able to do it without guidance from this community. THANK you to everyone who suggested silverettes and APNO cream. You healed my nipples and saved my journey.

Troubleshooting/Tips Help weaning off of triple feeding

Upvotes

My LO is 6 weeks old, born at 37 weeks. We’ve been triple feeding since my milk came in on day 5, she had some blood sugar issued. I’ve done 3 weighted feeds, at 2 weeks she transferred 15ml, at 4 weeks she transferred 30ml, and at 6 weeks she transferred 50ml. I’m trying to stop pumping except overnight when my husband bottle feeds her but I don’t want to lose my supply. I’m trying to latch her as much as possible but sometimes she just keeps popping on and off and crying even though I see milk coming out. I’m trying to just feed her and not the freezer but she doesn’t seem to empty me enough but gets mad if I pump prior and my breasts are soft. Help! I don’t want to give up BF!

Support Needed How to wean 14m?

Upvotes

I’ve been nursing my son for 14m. I love it but it’s taking a toll on me. I don’t want to fully cut him off but I want to start the process of at least night weaning. He can’t go longer than 3 hrs without a least a sip. I know it’s mainly a comfort thing. I used to be a stay at home mom for the first year so I wasn’t worried about him coming up to nurse and I wanted to, and still want to nurse him until he’s at least 18m. I didn’t mind waking up every 3 hrs or having him sleep with us, but now I’m working full time. He comes to work with me because I work at a daycare. We wake up early morning and he nurses all night, before we head to daycare/work and right as we get to the car and then all night right now. He also plays with my other nipple and no matter how much I cover it he always finds a way to it unless I physically put my finger over my nipple and push down. He’s on solids and he is starting to eat really good, I offer him cows milk before bed. I then dump and rinse the sippy cup then put water. I try to offer him the water when he wants to nurse at night but he just screams super loud until I give him boob. And I’m mean hours at a time. I try to comfort him, I’ve even tried a paci again thought he never took one. Ignoring him, soothing him, just getting up to play, read a book, white noise, gentle piano music, showers at 3am even. But nothing soothes him. Now he’s throwing huge tantrums. My husband needs to get up and go to work and he drives for work so he needs his sleep. We’ve slept in different rooms but our walls are so thin that nothing is helping. Last night was my breaking point. My son was latched all night long and we all slept great but I was drained dry. It hurt so bad. Does anyone have any tips on how to at least get their baby night weaned?

Discussion Breastfeeding at night causes more wake ups

Upvotes

I hope I don't get hate for this but is it wrong to say (if asked) that breastfeeding causes more night wakes.

A mom was complaining about her baby still have a few night wakes and was at her wits end about it. She said she didn't want to sleep train so I suggested weaning night feedings and it was like I cursed her family.

Is it not common knowledge that breastfeeding causes more night awakenings? Is it wrong to point that out?

I thought because it was a part of SS7 more people knew that. Should I just never suggest weaning 😭

Discussion How to “gently” night wean after 1?

Upvotes

I have an almost 13 month old who is still waking multiple times a night to nurse and I’m doneeeee (lol). I don’t really even know where to begin with night weaning because with my first I had to travel for a week and that kind of happened naturally.

any tips? I know it’s not for hunger since it’s just like flutter sickles till she falls asleep which was fine for a year but I’m now beyond sleep deprived.

Discussion When you introduce food at 6 months, how long do you go between feeds on average?

Upvotes

My baby doesn’t love the bottle so I have to plan around my breast feeding schedule. Husband and I are planning our first outing ever this weekend - we’ll go out for lunch and be gone 2 hours. It’s not very long but I want to play it safe in case baby gets hungry.
When do we get longer stretches? When we introduce food at 6 months, how long will the stretches be then? I’m just truly really excited to have our first date night where we can just enjoy each other, not rush home, and be gone a few hours without worry.
I adore my baby! But a few hours away once a month I know I will really appreciate.

Support Needed Breastfeeding is stressing me out, how to cope?

I'm 8 weeks pp and have been having a very difficult time with breastfeeding. When I get the baby to latch it hurts a lot. The worst thing is that it takes him 20-30 mins each side (an hour total) and after that I supplement with formula. Sometimes he cries and doesn't latch at all. I know I should have the patience to feed him but I honestly cannot do this for an hour every 2-3 hours without going crazy. I tried pumping using my spectra but my output is so low, like 1-1.5 oz max. I wasn't able to do the Motn pumping so was only doing 6 or so pumps a day. Pumping is also stressful because I barely get any time to do it. And then I have to wash the parts too.

Honestly I'm at my wit's end. I'm okay with combo feeding but wanted to try to give baby breast milk because it's so beneficial for them. When I think of quitting and going EFF I feel so guilty. But I'm going through a severe bout of depression and a lot of it is being caused by this breastfeeding stress. Are there any easy ways to make this work better that won't make me want to run away or disappear forever? How are other moms managing, especially those who are able to EBF?

Supply Dip Milk supply tanked after pregnancy - transitioning 8mo to formula

Upvotes

Anybody experience trouble with milk supply for their baby if they got pregnant again pretty soon? I have an 8mo and am almost 16 weeks pregnant.

My 8mo has been EBF up until now. We’ve offered him formula in bottles before and he totally refuses a bottle. I’ve felt my supply dwindling over the last month or so and have been adding more formula to his foods (he eats 3 meals per day) to try and make up for it. I’ve hit a breaking point today as he won’t nurse for longer than 2 minutes most of the time. I think it’s time to be done breastfeeding, but since he refuses a bottle and can’t quite figure out any type of cup, I started syringe feeding him today. Has anyone had to do this for their baby and have any advice/encouragement? Syringe feeding sounds honestly miserable for both of us but it’s all I can think to do (in addition to sneaking more formula into his foods) until he learns to use a sippy cup or straw cup. I also obviously feel incredibly guilty for having to stop breastfeeding him before I wanted or planned to, but that’s a whole other conversation. Just looking for some reassurance I guess.

Newborn Troubleshooting Breastfeeding a 7 week old is so chaotic?

So I just started to transition back to breastfeeding after the first 6 weeks of more bottle feeding.

Is it normal breastfeeding a 7 week old doesnt follow a pattern a lot of the time? Like the “feed everything 3 hours finish both breasts in 20 minutes” pattern? My baby feeds in a one hour long session that includes several diaper changes, sometimes sleepiness, or getting half full and doesnt take the other breast until later. Today he just had a 120ml bottle because we had to go out. He fell asleep and then woke up after half an hour screaming for a feed, fed on one side, and falls asleep again. Does EBF get more predictable with time and when will it happen?

Encouragement/Solidarity How many ounces of mL do you usually get out of a pumping session?

Upvotes

Edit title: Ounces OR mL***

Where are you in your BF journey? What’s your pump/BF regimen like? How many times per day? How many ounces or mL per session and/or total for the day? What do you do to maximize your supply while returning full time to work?
Looking for ideas, understanding, and encouragement.

Troubleshooting/Tips 3 weeks postpartum pumping

I’m three weeks postpartum and originally thought I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed due to a surgery I had. Today I pumped to try again and got a tiny bit. Is there a way to build up a supply? I’m not sure what to do moving forward!

Newborn Troubleshooting Lanolin Cream

Upvotes

Little one is three weeks old and EBF. I’ve been putting lanolin cream on after every feed. Everything is just so sensitive. The pediatrician says things will get better and not be as sensitive. When can I expect that though? And am I hurting the “healing” process by using the cream after every feed? It just feels cumbersome and I’m impatient for things to feel “easier”. Thanks for any advice!

Troubleshooting/Tips Period while breastfeeding…HOW?!

I just got my period back and I’m breastfeeding a 21 lb baby every 3 hours. I am DEAD. It seems like I’m drinking and peeing constantly all day. Eating as much as my stomach will let me get in. I’m trying to eat high caloric healthy foods but I still feel constantly faint. How are we supposed to do this?? I had to give my baby a big snack before bed because I had way less milk by the need of the day and he was getting frustrated.

Side note: I’m about to do a road trip and I’m peeing every ten minutes.. pray for me omg

How are we functioning and going out and about like this??

Weaning Struggling to let go of breastfeeding

My son is 13 months and I feel I need to stop breastfeeding. I know 13 months isn’t old (I bf my daughter for 3 years) but he’s not doing well with food and would rather have milk, and he’s started pulling down my top and trying to get my boobs out in public which I’m not keen on.

However he is my third and last baby and I’m really really struggling emotionally with the idea of stopping. I completely adore him and we have a wonderful bond and I’m scared of that fading. Also I’m going back to work soon so it’s feeling like the end of an era there too. Just feel like it’s all happening at once and I can’t cope.

Pumping Breastfeeding and wfh while in-laws watch baby - should I ask them to keep baby home or just pump?

This is kind of a relationship question I guess, but it does have to do with breastfeeding!

I started back at work and I wfh full time. My mom has been watching baby for a few weeks, and she brings baby to me for each feeding. Occasionally I'll have an important meeting, and although I'm entitled to breaks, I will decide to pump before or during that meeting (angled camera up) and instruct my mom to give baby a bottle. For less important meetings, I will be camera off and feed if needed. This has worked out well so far. My mom is kind of a homebody but will take the baby out for walks in between feeding or during nap time and then come home in time for feeding.

Now my MIL and FIL are coming to visit for a week soon. I was not planning on taking time off work, but my husband will. I'm sure they will want to go out and do things all together, but I've not yet sent baby out into the world without me. Husband has watched baby while I go out for an activity, but we usually time it so that I'm back within a couple of hours.

I worked hard to breastfeed. Baby had weight gain issues and we triple feeding and bottle fed for a few weeks to get back on track. I will eventually send her to daycare and have to pump, but I have been treasuring every nursing session.

Is it unreasonable to ask my in-laws (or maybe just my husband) to stick around home with baby so I can feed her? Maybe I could tell them my meeting schedule and they can go for an activity when I'd have a meeting anyway? Am I being too controlling??
