Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD
After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

๐คท Only in Brighton... I am once again trapped in by the horse racing.
Please Brighton tell me if I am overreacting and being a miserable old fart. I live off Whitehawk and the only way to get to my house from my place of work is by one of two roads that are both used by the horseracing and so are blocked off for 20 mins at a time, every time there is a race. So here I am, it's 5.35am, so peak travel time, tired from a long day at work, stuck at the race track for the past 15 mins, and late picking up my kid from nursery. Yes, I've got a front row seat of the racing, but tbh it's not something that I support. The traffic here is backed up from the top of of Wilson road to woodingdean. Why is this accepted?

๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐คFood Related๐ฆ๐ฅจ๐ข๐ฅ๐ณ๐ง๐๐ Drop your cheaper eats recommendations!
Especially want to promote local small businesses
I say 'cheaper' because it's hard to find truly cheap filling meals out these days
My faves are:
Burger Brothers. If you go on their website and order for collection you get a 10% discount code. With this a burger and chips can be a tenner. Plus the burgers are unbelievable. Sometimes I'll just get the simple jack one for ยฃ8.25
We Love Falafel - a super filled wrap with the best falafel I've ever had for ยฃ6/7 is always a saviour (altho i do remember when, like Pompokos, you could get a meal here with a fiver and be given change)
Casa Azul in the open market - Just under a tenner for 3 very full tacos. Don't think you'd find more authentic Mexican food in the city
Foodilic - Can get a pretty decent breakfast for around ยฃ8 or a huge salad for about ยฃ10 with enough for next day leftovers
Would love to hear some less known places

๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐คFood Related๐ฆ๐ฅจ๐ข๐ฅ๐ณ๐ง๐๐ Free raw Bella&Duke cat food (collect from near the level ASAP)
Hi, if any cat people would like 12 packs of Bella&Duke raw cat food and ideally can collect tonight from near the level, drop me a DM. Our cats don't like it, plus now we've run out of space in our freezer ๐ Tried to give it to local cat charities but turns out they can't take frozen food. If you're a nice person who feeds local stray cats then you get preference x thanks!

Local Advice needed Mice
Hi everyone, we have a bit of a mice problem at home. We live in a flat (a converted house). A while ago we saw one and got the pest control around. After months of nothing we caught one but nothing else ever since. Now we keep seeing them (could be the same one, could be different ones). Weโve reset the traps and got some ultrasound thingy. Any other recommendations? Some of you have had similar situations?

๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐คFood Related๐ฆ๐ฅจ๐ข๐ฅ๐ณ๐ง๐๐ Wanna date? Tunisian stuffed dates at the Open Market (again!)
I recently made a post on here about Fissa Fissa and a few people seemed interested so I thought Iโd make another post and give you all a little more notice! We will be back at the Open Market this Saturday (5th September) :))
My boyfriend has been growing this little business and had his first market stall at the Open Market a couple weeks ago. The response we got was honestly amazing. Thank you!
It made me so happy to see the look on peopleโs faces as they tasted the samples and I loved being able to convert a few date-haters into date-sympathisers ๐ด
So if the Open Market wasnโt already part of your Saturday plans, make sure you pass by and say hi!

Local Advice needed Local gift/art shops that ship?
Some friends are getting married in Brighton soon, but I'm living abroad and can't make it for the big day.
Are there any local shops that have websites for ordering a potential gift? Would love to find something meaningful and local: art, pottery, home goods, etc. Google is absolutely trash for this kind of thing now, so any help is appreciated!

Local Advice needed Varndean adult learning - Counselling. Anyone done this?
I'm looking for anyone with experience (or thoughts) on the Varndean Adult Education counselling skills course. It's a bit of an odd one and I'm trying to figure out if I'm wrong to be taking it on.

๐Lost & Found๐ Lost bag.
Long shot but thought I'd try on here. Upon getting too drunk on craft beers at Unbarred brewery on Sunday I left my bag somewhere along my journey home to Hanover. I stopped at the KFC but that's the only record I have of going someone before getting home. I've contacted both Unbarred and KFC and they have nothing in Lost and Found.
It's a black north face rucksack with some clothes, grey water bottle and some text books in. Nothing of mega value but some important items for my studies. Feel like a Muppet and won't be drinking for a while but if anyone has come across this or know where might be good to contact please any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

๐คท Only in Brighton... I can't pretend this is all fine no more
Some of the suburbs around this city are beautiful, some are at least well kept. People who have lived through the golden age of the 60 & 70's have always told me brighton has been a mix of good and bad, and ofcourse it still is.. I have seen pictures and stories of run down places in brighton, but I have also seen pictures and stories of places in unelected times.. its really hard to explain what's so rough about this city without seeing it with your own eyes. The section of grand parade after morley street; addicts passed out on their doorstep, bottles of piss everywhere, hell even the street furniture is trashed only after a year of complete renovation; and I know brighton was built in the height of the British Empires riches, a normal city on a normal budget cannot easily maintain every quirk of this city.. but its still sad how overgrown and dirty the front of the pavillions parameter looks, or piss stains with rough sleepers outside the Dome..I need to admit the seafront is a shithole and its heartbreaking seeing the shell of its former self.. everything is neglected, weedy and disintegrating, but restoration work is being carried out and the seafront is set to look much better in 2 to 5 years time even.. Western road really breaks me, when it goes into hove it starts looking better, but the abandoned victorian mansion by waitrose filled with money laundering fronts and/or shitty branding makes it look dystopian, western road was upper class maybe 70 years ago, maybe 50 years ago it was doing okay, but nowadays its horrid... I cant explain my venting very well but something about the town centre just pisses me off.. I still love brighton and things are trying to be glamorous again but man it still feels grimy sometimes..
*EDIT*
I have never lived in the 20th century, I overdid the sunshine of brighton in the past. I have never really lived through its horrid proper downs, it's always been a stale "mix" ever since I was born. That said, if brighton was better 50 years ago or not, I will not be the judge of that- Regardless I still think brighton can look tons better with some time, and basic civic sense.

Local Advice needed Dead animals on the roads
Is anyone noticing a lot and I mean a LOT of dead animals on the roads and motorways around Brighton and the surrounding areas? Was driving around the peace haven/ lewes area and was noticing dead squirrels/other animals every 5-10 metres. At one point I saw a dead deer too? Want to know if this is just me.
