I still say that Edge was my favorite browser before I got into the privacy space. And I still it's the best one for people who don't care what browser they use. No extra steps, it comes with your computer and it works really well.
I really enjoyed the vertical tab implementation though it was my first time using it back then

Yeah I liked vertical tabs so much that I even went back to edge from Firefox until Firefox implemented it as well
For the first time I can say yeah the edge as default is much better than using chrome for anyone not caring enough about privacy

Edge is fine but these constant popups trying to sell me something or use me to give them free marketing are really annoying.
A few weeks ago there was a popup for Microsoft rewards where the „dismiss“ button (at least I think it was the dismiss button…) was literally not visible because of an image that was above the button.

I agree. My Chrome/Opera GX friends all thought I was crazy whenever I said I liked Edge the best. It is built into the operating system and runs very well. I also thought it was quite sleek after debloating it.

Edge was really good but I don't like how they keep pushing Bing and keep changing settings. I literally have to update Edge settings everytime I update or change device.

Basically, the original Norwegian Opera died back in 2016 when it was bought out by a Chinese consortium (Kunlun Tech). Since then, it’s gone completely downhill. Their privacy policy is super aggressive about tracking and sharing data with third-party advertisers, and their built-in "VPN" is really just a basic proxy that routes your traffic right through their servers while they log your activity. On top of all that, a few years ago their parent company got exposed for running predatory, high-interest micro-loan apps in developing countries that used crazy harassment tactics when people couldn't pay. It’s basically just a bloated Chromium reskin wrapped in ad networks and bad press at this point.

i guess my point went way over peoples heads. I was making the point that there is some correlation between the popular and the most hated browsers. Im saying the masses appear to be making bad decisions on what browser to use.

If someone asks which browser to use, I would certainly recommend Chrome or Edge. Although their privacy may be quite poor, they remain the most reliable options. Should you face any issues with either, you can be confident you are not at fault. We should avoid extending this community’s enthusiasm for niche browsers to the general public.

if someone asks me which browser to use, id reccomend Brave or Firefox. Brave for people who want to block ads and Firefox for people who just want a browser,

Cause I just don’t like its interface and enjoy more the vertical tabs thingy, also I could install Firefox and link my zen account to it since it’s all Firefox account at the end but the Firefox app on iOS has a less friendly UI to me and worth integration.
Edit : also Firefox putting IA chat on my face on install is putting me off2

Chromium has ad blocking still. People are just assmad because MV3 is a more secure API and they can't get RCE'd and hacked as easy.

MV3 prevents full ad-blocking. uBlock Lite is unusable on several piracy sites and less popular sites.

Extensions in general are bad for security, but MV2 is a step backwards. Sure it's more powerful, but at the expense of majorly increased attack surface.
Also, why are you on piracy sites to begin with? Those are malware ridden hell holes, and many malware blocking DNS resolvers (i.e: the malware filtering Mullvad, ControlD, Quad9) block a lot of piracy sites entirely due to that.

Because plenty are safe and secure, you simply have heard the narrative from the general media. I won't list the safe sites, but they make money off of ads. They are completely safe without the ads.
There are malware sites - but as I have 15 years of experience with only installing one virus back in like, 2013 off an untrusted site nowadays I think the sites I've landed up on are very safe. Piracy with guidance here in 2026 is much safer than the 2000s or 2010s.

Lmfao saying this to someone who had to save one of their best friends from a massive credential stealer just a month or so ago because she pirated something and it had an infostealer embedded is crazy work. I've seen it myself. Be careful where you search. Don't browse sketchy sites. And whenever you need to peruse something you don't trust, use a VM as the chance of a malware escaping containment is far harder that way.

I do care what browser I use, here is my top 4: #1 orion, #2 safari, #3 helium #4 gnome/epiphany.
I want a memory efficient battery efficient browser, I'm not on windows so edge isn't the most battery efficient for me. Chrome is too bloated, same about opera, if I want bit higher performance, then I use helium because it is blink based and has better performance than the other browsers I like

Helium’s main problem (other than being UGC) is not potential "bloat". A browser can be packed with features and still perform extremely well if those features are implemented properly. Helium’s bigger issue is that the code it already has is very poorly engineered.

Helium literally fixed the entire issue with UGC (the component updater), the issue with them is no long term plans (condescending anyone who wants to know what their post MV2 plan is) and whining that Codeberg doesnt like crypto/vibe code projects taking over their servers.
Bloated unneeded features like that (especially crypto since that's a common point of attack) add needless attack surface. Brave Origin can be had essentially for free with a policy tweak that disables all the stuff Origin disables even on Windows, and that would be the ideal configuration.

eh, i know what he said but he hasn't done anything that would suggest that. i dont like crypto and llm slop either but i get why some people might not like the change. it's clearly an opinionated stance by the people who run codeberg, essentially banning projects of a type they don't like. it's not really up to codeberg to decide if llm/crypto projects are bad. it just sets a bad precedent, like in theory what's stopping them from banning say piracy related projects next? obviously if your views align with theirs you won't mind this change, but if you want a platform to be open and used by everyone it's better to not make these kinds of subjective restrictions. the closest analogy i can think of is chat control, like yes cp is bad but it starts down a risky road of censorship.

i think you missed the point a little, even if you agree it's still an opinion-based choice, codeberg is supposed to be free and open but with these changes it's a little more restrictive than github. it's just a slippery slope when you start banning certain types of projects.

i dont get edge's and Opera's hate, firefox doesnt have PWAs or dinamic tabs, annd edge's pdf reader is great, and no browser has the level of personalization that Opera GX has, I feel they hate them because they are popular

Opera gx is actually my second favorite browser. It would be my favorite if they made extensions apply to the side bar. Opera actually has nothing to do with the reason I made this post. I was pointing out that 2 of the most hated browsers also happen to be 2 of the most popular. Those are Edge and Chrome.

In 2015, I’d have completely agreed with you. Pre-2016 Opera was genuinely innovative and easily one of the best browsers around. But right after the 2016 purchase by a Chinese consortium, it took a sharp turn into actual predatory behavior. Their parent company started operating predatory micro-loan apps (like OKash) in Kenya and India with insane, illegal interest rates and harassment tactics like messaging users' contacts. Pair that with aggressive data harvesting and selling their "free VPN" telemetry, and it's just a shell of what it used to be.

That's wild. I use Zen for my personal browser on PC and Arc for my personal browser on Mac, but I actually use Edge for my work browser on Mac because of some chromium requirements, but also wanted vertical and pinned tabs (which chrome only recently added).

One opinion: Chrome is less private and less performant than Edge. Yes, both browsers send telemetry, but at least Edge has an ad-blocker and a VPN without downloading extensions. Edge is also the quickest to open.

For me Firefox has consistently been a thorn in my side every time I tried to daily drive it. 8+ years of the same exact bugs coming up over and over again across multiple machines.

Chrome should be more hated than Edge IMO. Edge actually runs better on battery and is more lightweight (funny, coming from Microslop but I guess Shittle can't do better).
