I’m a first-year student in the 8-year BS/MD program at Hofstra University. This past cycle, I got into 3 out of the 4 BS/MD programs that I applied to without doctor parents or dropping tens of thousands on massive corporate consulting agencies. I did this entirely by strategizing my application correctly and working not only hard, but “smart.”

I’m not here to sell you generic essay formulas or surface-level tips you can find on Google. I want to pass down the exact strategies I used to beat the 0.5% acceptance rate. • Stats: 4.3 W / 4.0 UW GPA | 1520 SAT | 35 ACT | 12 APs (mostly 5s, some 4s)
• Research: Completed 6 neuroscience/bio research projects (including labs at Yale, Vanderbilt, and UMASS Amherst) with international journal acceptances.
• Clinical Shadowing: 300+ hours at a major public hospital.
• Volunteering: 250+ hours consistently every single year (Grades 9–12).
• Interview: Despite having a 103 fever on my MMI interview day, I successfully completed my 3-hour long interview; an admissions officer directly complimented me, stating that "every part of my application was amazing" and that the committee was "very happy I applied."

Can anyone tell me what the first step is to get admission into an MD program in British Columbia? I would also appreciate any information about the admission requirements and the process.

Senior in NYC. Applying to BS/DO early assurance programs this cycle, already submitted to LECOM EAP and waiting on that. Trying to figure out if the rest of my list is realistic or if I'm wasting apps.

Stats 3.87 UW 1410 SAT (No Superscore) (690 RW, 720 M), retaking as ACT Oct 17 School doesn't rank 11 APs: APUSH (5), Macro (5), Comp Gov (4), Lit (4), APES (4), Chem (3), Calc BC (3, self-studied), plus Lang, Bio, Precalc 4 college courses through CUNY College Now: Calc I (A-), Calc II (C), Epidemiology (A-), Psych (in progress)

Gaps I already know about C in college Calc II, and it's on my transcript as a letter grade No physics, no geometry, no world language. My school doesn't offer them No math or lab science senior year

ECs Clinical assistant at a multispecialty practice, Dec 2024 to now, 450+ hrs. Rooming patients, vitals, histories, presenting to the physician. Shadowing internal med, nephro, and vascular during the same shifts Pharmacy volunteer, 110 hrs over ~2.5 months (the pharmacy closed) TA for AP Calc BC and AP Bio at my school, one year EMT course, taking it spring 2027, so it'll be in progress not finished LOR from a DO

Questions

1. How much does the Calc II C actually hurt at DO EAPs, given it's a college course I took in high school?
2. Is 450 clinical hours enough to stand out or is that normal at this point for these programs?
3. Anyone here get into MKEAP or ROKC-EAP from out of region? MKEAP gives a scoring boost to applicants within 100 miles of Joplin and I'm 1,200 miles away.
4. Worth applying to programs with an MCAT floor if I'm planning to apply out anyway?

Hello everybody. I’m applying to a BS/DO program this fall really soon since it’s early acceptance. I really need your opinion on how strong my chances are. The main issue I think is my extracurricular, I don’t have much. I have a 3.7 GPA, 1320 SAT (planning on superscore hopefully 1400+). Currently my extracurriculars are Online tutoring, Healthcare Initiative project, Im working on a children’s book that will get published online soon, I also have an art portfolio. Im planning joining some clubs as soon as school starts. ALSO another concern I have is I have no shadowing , I really hope I can get even a few hours of shadowing before applications. However Im currently in my 2nd year of a CMA program so I think that also helps. Idk lmk guys, and pls leave some tips anything can be helpful ! Ty

im a senior in high school in jersey. im really interested in trauma surgery and really hope i get into a bs/md school to make my route safer. however, my stats (3.88 gpa, 1460 sat, decent ecs) seem to be holding me back. i know MDs match better into competitive specialties, so is it better to go traditional then MD or BS/DO for safety? how rarely do DO docs match into general surgery?

I have a lot leadership, one national award, a lot of volunteer and shadowing experience, being paid by my state museum and a publication, I do robotics and basketball, APs and extracurriculars and other random things. is it enough?

Will only taking 7 APs (psych, lit, bio, chem, calc bc, pre calc, Spanish) total in HS, along with 2 DC (comp 1 and comp 2) hurt me?

I also in all of hs took Spanish 1-4 pre AP, physics honors, chem honors, lang lit 1 and 2 honors, geo Honors, algebra 2 honors

I'm considering switching from BS SE to BS DA , but won't technically start until Dec. 1st 2026 / Jan. 1st 2027

Hi all! In an effort to share a little more about finding the right research opportunities and setting yourself up for success, I wanted to share the following. Alexandra on our team wrote about her first meeting with a PI and what she wishes she'd understood going in. A few things from it that stuck with me:

You're not just trying to get picked, you're also evaluating them. It's easy to walk in thinking "please just let me into your lab," especially with zero research experience. But mentorship quality is going to shape most of what you actually get out of the experience, so pay attention to whether they're enthusiastic, approachable, and someone you could see yourself admitting "I don't understand this" to.

Look at where they land in the author list before the meeting. Skimming Google Scholar isn't enough. Check if they're first or senior author on their own work versus buried in the middle as more of a collaborator on someone else's project. Big difference in what you're actually about to sign up for.

Don't fake understanding something you don't. The PI has usually spent 15 to 20 years on this. Asking a genuinely thoughtful question lands way better than pretending you already get it.

You might have to lead the conversation. If you're the one who asked for the meeting, don't assume they'll come in with a structured list of questions for you. Have a rough sense of how you want to open it and where you want it to go.

The most prestigious lab isn't automatically the right one. She almost took a highly competitive spot that would've been 15 hours a week of mostly data entry, and turned it down for a lab with better mentorship instead. Worth actually thinking through what your day to day would look like, not just the name on the door.
