That's what the inside of most of those old copper peds looks like, and nobody cares about them anymore since nobody cares about wireline copper telephone/DSL service. The result is that they don't get repaired when somebody drives a lawn tractor into them as often happens.

I did see one getting repaired just recently

That said it was accoss the street from a federal building.. probably some legacy Tech that can't be fully replaced (ie fax)

Fax still works over voip.
Some optical terminals still have voip.

You probably just have an ISP that uses a mix of copper/fiber

My company uses an E-fax service. It’s cheaper than a POTS line.

Decades ago I saw a man splicing cables at the edge of a smallish hole while it was sleeting. I felt so sorry for him and how miserable it must be to splice hundreds of pairs of tiny wire in conditions like that

Well.. not many people have home DSL or analog phones now a days. So maybe 2 people were inconvenienced by this.

Likely all dead. These have been chopped off in my neighborhood in like 2019 or so.

It's a phone copper-wire disribution box. It was perfectly normal back then.
