Data Cabling My first ever rack, done 5 years ago fresh out of community college

The cable trays were already in place and the cables were all on the floor. By the end of the two week process, my hands were white from dust and red from cuts.

Excessive? Yup, but it’s mine and I love it.

Built a tool to stop guessing cable lengths from paper blueprints — measuring straight off the floor plan photo

I run structured cabling jobs (data drops, racks, the usual) and for years I quoted every job the same painful way: print the floor plan, trace runs with a ruler, guess at a margin, retype everything into a spreadsheet, then build a PDF for the client by hand. Every single time I either over-ordered cable or came up short mid-install.

So I built myself a tool that skips all of that: you drop in a photo or PDF of the floor plan, calibrate the scale with two points, and trace the actual cable runs on your phone or tablet right there on site. It spits out exact meters per run, and generates a PDF report for the client with the plan, cable list, and materials breakdown. It also works completely offline, since half the jobs I do have zero signal indoors.

It's been my daily driver for a while now and it's finally in a state I'm not embarrassed to show people. Not trying to sell anything hard here — mostly curious if this is a problem other installers actually deal with, or if I'm the only one who was still doing this with a ruler and a spreadsheet. Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Satisfying cable organizer

I made a V2 of my cable organizer so it can fit up to 2 meter long cables, and is compatible with almost any type of cable!

I really liked how this turned out, so I wanted to share it so other people could also use it if they wanted to!

Cleanest modular synthesizer patch I've ever seen

Normally the stuff over on r/modular is like the antithesis of this subreddit, but this was a nice surprise.

The patch cables are even color-coded to match the sliders.

Data Cabling Work in progress. What the hell do I do with these turns?

Post image

They sag like 1/4" or so without support and on turns even with a comb one pops up. How do I fix that?

Boss says this has to be perfect, and I have a decent start. But there's going to be about 140 more cables coming up from beneath to the rack.

Had a hardware refresh at work and was finally able to replace the gear and clean up the closets. Huge improvement going from the first iteration of cat6a patch cordes to the new slim line cat6a.

Before/After Here's A Little Before & After

A little network rescue for one of my network closets. Far from my best work, but I'm proud of it none-the-less considering the circumstances. Limited to a 3.75 Hr maintenance window and it was just myself and one of my technicians. This is part of a Casino CCTV system, so I had to fight to get even that much downtime.

The blue wiring is the corporate IT side, which is outside of my purview. I am strictly the green stuff (and a little gray and black) which is all CCTV and access control.

I Inherited this ~10 year old installation a few years back. Had to wait until our infrastructure refresh to be able to negotiate time to blow out all the old crap and re-do it.

Yes this rack is way oversized for current need, but "planning for the future" and all that.

Was not able to pull the cable out and place in conduits with like. Home run pipes from different locations on floor. Hope you like it.

Still a work in progress but its functional and I'm pretty happy so far. Its been quite the learning experience designing, programming and building this panel. Pump controls are complete. Valve controls will be integrated next.
