Cat Picture - OC Prayers for Gigi
At some point yesterday, Gigi ingested a bunch of vitamin D supplements after the bottle fell on the floor behind a night stand and the broken top popped open. We didn’t even know about it until late last night. She had started vomiting earlier, then she stopped eating, and appeared lethargic around the time she should be running through the hallway getting tangled up in the sheets as we attempt to make the bed.
I took her to the emergency vet late last night where they confirmed around 3AM that she needed to be hospitalized due to hypercalcemia caused by the vitamin D toxicity.
This afternoon, the vet called back to update us: her calcium score is worsening, so we approved their use of a more aggressive (and expensive) drug therapy. Hopefully she’ll improve tomorrow, but the vet warned us that it could be a real rollercoaster. An expensive roller coaster with an uncertain outcome.

Needless to say, after rescuing this cat off the street and deeply bonding with her over the last year, I’m ready to do what I can to save her. However, there now exists a possibility where I may not be able to afford to save her.
We are really worried about Gigi. Hopefully, we get some good news tomorrow. We can only take it one day at a time. I’m really hoping we don’t have to say goodbye to our little screaming chaos goblin. It’s hard wrestling with the possibility that she can be saved, but I won’t be able to afford to save her.

Secondly, we are awaiting her new results from the new treatment. I will update once we know more.

EDIT (9/1, 12PM): I was able to visit her for a brief moment before work today. She was clearly happy to see me. It sounds like she’s a bit down being there and not eating very much.
She perked up for me, was very affectionate, and ate some Churu much to the vet tech’s delight.
I plan on visiting her again after work to try and get her to eat some more.

Oh no what a horrible accident I am so sorry for this happening I can imagine how stressful it is. I think she will be able to make it through, I hope the best for her to recover and I hope everything works out. Sending love 💗

Vitamin D liquid-gels, sweet tasting, with the flip top lid that pops open when knocked off a desk or counter? I’ve been through it. And I’m so sorry you’re going through the same thing. My guy pulled through. I hope your girl does, too.
I also hope lots of cat parents see this post and yeet these danger nuggets if they have them. It never occurred to me these would be appealing to cats. I had a lot of guilt for a long time for what I didn’t know.
Vitamin D is necessary half the year where i live. For anyone in the same boat, get gummies with a proper lid that the cats have no interest in.

Yup, I have to take Vitamin D supplements due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome; I have malabsorption through both the skin and the gut, so I have to take a sublingual form to improve absorption, but that makes them especially dangerous for pets. I get them pre-packed by the pharmacy, because my cat could get into everything and loved to eat whatever he could find!
Vitamins can be so dangerous for pets because of the high concentrations, they can quickly become life-threatening and are very difficult to flush out before the damage is done to their little organs.
Cats can be very inventive, and OTC vitamins are much easier to pop open or spill; we don’t tend to be as concerned if a couple drop on the floor or end up behind furniture because they’re not considered “strong medication”, but overdoses and bad drug interactions quickly become life-threatening.
I’m so glad your cat was okay, and I truly hope Gigi gets the medical interventions she needs as well! It’s such a stressful and heartbreaking process, as they often get worse before they get better with overdoses like this 😔💔

I fully understand your situation. Have been in a similar situation about cat emergency and expenses before. Thank you for choosing her even though you could expenses over her. All my prayers for Gigi!

I was very close to being in a similar situation a few weeks ago. My little brother dropped a 500mg Tylenol tablet under the dining table and no one told me about it until a couple days later. I immediately found it but I knew my cat had already approached it and gave it the sniff test since the tablet is right next to where she naps. I adopted her only 3 months ago so I am extremely grateful she didn't eat it. My brother is now relegated to taking meds on a different floor.
