I recently helped build a data simulator for a new policy the Union of European Clubs (UEC) is pitching for the post-2027 UEFA revenue cycle. Wanted to see what people here think of the idea.

Right now, lower-league teams mostly rely on FIFA training compensation, which usually only triggers during transfers or when a player signs their first pro contract. The UEC's proposed Player Development Reward (PDR) would instead take a 5% slice of the total prize money from the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. That pool would be paid out as a reward to the clubs that trained those players between the ages of 12 and 19.

I was playing around with the tool we built and the numbers are really impressive. Looking at Antonio Rüdiger’s Champions League minutes from 2021 to 2026, his 5th-tier boyhood club FC Hertha 03 Zehlendorf would have earned an estimated €892k over those five seasons, averaging a median of €188k every year. Other local Berlin grassroots clubs would also get paid out, with Neuköllner Sportfreunde getting €445k and SV Tasmania Berlin receiving €221k. VfB Stuttgart would also pocket €669k.

If you applied this retroactively over the last five seasons, it would have redistributed €726m across 52 UEFA associations.

‘Debut patches’ will be appearing for the first time in the 2026-27 men’s Champions League campaign as part of an agreement between Fanatics and UEFA, European soccer’s governing body.

Players appearing for the first time in the competition will have a small patch displayed on the sleeve of their jersey, with the word ‘debut’ being incorporated into the Champions League’s ‘starball’ logo.

These four- Hazard, Neymar, Bale and Reus were touted to take over from Messi and Ronaldo once they slowed down.

Guess what, these two freaks ended up outlasting the careers of the 4 players that came after them are we’re supposed to take over from them. I don’t think we will see such freaks for many years to come!

This is an average ranking created by averaging multiple independent football rating systems from Opta, Euro Club Index, FootballDatabase and UEFA’s three-season coefficient to balance current strength with recent European performance.

This is not my opinion.

I’m still pretty new to soccer. I occasionally watched Premier League and MLS matches before, but my interest really picked up after the World Cup and I’m still learning the ins and outs of how everything works.

One thing I don’t understand: why does the transfer window stay open after the season has already started? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have squads finalized before the first match?

After seeing the work that’s been done over the summer, the new signings, attacking mentality, tactics, I think this is a team that could pose a serious threat this year and make perhaps a quarter finals push.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see them take out some heavy hitting Prem team in the knockout rounds.

For me, yes. They have a more complete squad than Barcelona and Bayern. Bayern are weak in defense and midfield in my opinion. Barca have a weak defense. Manchester City could be the surprise of this UCL. Even though PSG remains the best starting 11, I think they lost some pace by selling Barcola.

Bookmark it. PSG will be eliminated in the round of 16 after going out of their way to lower the level of their team.

💰 Has the transfer market completely lost its mind?
I see a lot of people saying that Yan Diomande doesn’t deserve to be bought for more than €100 million.
But that makes me wonder: are we comparing today’s transfer market too much to the market from 10 or 15 years ago?
Back then, seeing a player go for €100 million or more was extremely rare. Today, transfer fees have increased massively, and some young players can reach incredibly high valuations very quickly.
So does a player like Yan Diomande really “deserve” a €100 million price tag?
Or is it simply that €100 million doesn’t mean the same thing in today’s transfer market?
Personally, I think it’s interesting to compare the two eras.

They dont want to sell their star player to barcelona but everywhere I go and hear many people not just barca fans saying “this is why atletico is a small club”.

Why would a team sell to direct rivals one of their best players? Are they a massive club if they bolster barcelona? People criticize many english teams, as well as bayern, for buying stars from teams in their own leagues.

Is there concern in England about Manchester City losing Pep and Rodri? Those seem like 2 big losses in a short span. What about Erling Haaland? Will he stay in Manchester for the long haul? They’ve been England’s best club of recent and a big player for British football in the champions league so them declining would be a big hit for premier league and all this coming after a disappointing result at the World Cup can’t be easy for British football fans.

I mean the players they sold are not even in their first team and are consistently warming the bench for them.

I'm genuinely curious about this.

When I browse this subreddit, Arsenal fans are everywhere discussing the Champions League as if they're one of us.

But Arsenal have never actually won the competition. Not only that, they've spent large parts of their history either not qualifying for it or getting knocked out before seriously threatening to win it.

So what is the attraction? Is it just enjoying the tournament as a neutral, or do Arsenal fans genuinely feel they belong in conversations about Europe's elite clubs when the one thing that defines elite status in this competition, actually winning it, is something they just can't do, and will never do due to their small club mentality?

Arsenal fans discussing anything in a UCL subreddit is like someone camping outside a VIP lounge because they nearly got in once back in 2006.
They spent 20 years telling everyone they'd be back, finally got another shot in 2026, and somehow ended up getting thrown out by the bouncer with their trousers around their ankles.

We all know UEFA’s new 36-team single table was supposed to kill off the "Group of Death." It didn't. It just hid it in the math. Because the 144 matches are generated by a random computer draw, the system accidentally creates hyper-dense clusters of teams that play each other disproportionately often.

Look at the 2025/26 draw: Chelsea, Napoli, Benfica, Ajax, and Qarabağ were randomly lumped into a cluster where they played 9 out of 10 possible matchups against each other.

Why this destroys fairness:

• The Points Tax: Because these 5 teams constantly cannibalize points from one another, their collective point ceiling drops.
• 68% Casualty Rate: Data simulations prove being stuck in a cluster like this slashes the joint probability of all 5 teams making the top 24 by a massive 68%. Someone always pays the price.
• Big League Shielding: UEFA's country rule prevents teams from the same nation playing each other. This means leagues with 5–6 teams (like the Premier League) are automatically immune from getting dragged into these death clusters together. Smaller leagues get entirely screwed.

The Graph Theory Fix

A new analysis reveals that UEFA can fix this with a single math tweak. By mapping the draw onto a perfectly symmetric, vertex-transitive graph—specifically C(36; ±{1, 4, 10, 17})—every single team is guaranteed the exact same structural position with no more hidden clusters. True mathematical parity.

Theoretically, Bayern should be able to rest all their players way more than other clubs in prem and la liga, but they don't for some reason. I know their depth is bad, but they literally won the league in 2023 with Sane, Gnabry and Chupo Moting as the front 3. Surely they would be fine without Kane and Olise for a few games?
