EU + A/C
hi everyone! i’m based in EU, specifically ireland. this year we experienced a bit of an unexpected heatwave during the summer, and it reached 30°, this made me severely uncomfortable for my chins and actually a nervous wreck as all A/Cs were sold out. as we close on summer, i’m trying to do my best and find an affordable AC unit. can anyone recommend any good ones? preferably portable ones, under about 300€. i just want to be prepared for next summer.

thank you! i hope so too, although ik ac is not common in europe 🥲 i just dont want them to suffer another summer.

No way I'm also from Ireland. In general I don't have A/C either, but the apartment gets pretty warm. I have the windows open always and the fan on. If it's super warm I put frozen water bottles in front of the fan

my house is a new build so it traps all the heat! it’s awful during summer. I also did that this summer, but i’d prefer something more reliable so i can comfortably (hopefully) leave the house without worrying about them, and sleep peacefully at night. 😅

I live in Italy and sadly I found no other way than the AC to keep temps under control… we got to 35° and my room was always 21° maximum 22, it’s expensive but I really don’t have to think about anything for the whole summer… I can go to the beach all day with no worries, and also i bought a camera and a thermometer so I can also check if the temps are ok because I have a Panasonic with the app so I can control everything remotely… I just installed one in my new home just for the room and it was 1500 euro with installation and all

yeah, i figured that this year. hence why im trying to buy an AC but they’re impossible to find here in ireland! all sold out, or VERY expensive. i’m also only a student with a part time job trying to do my best and don’t have the means to afford a proper installed AC, sadly. hopefully when i graduate. hence why im trying to even buy a portable AC. thank you for the response! woukd you mind linking the camera and thermometer?

Im in German and here the portasplit midea is quite famous. If you will buy one I highly recommend getting dual hose. Single hose is quite noisy

Yeah sound about right. But for me I got myself a single hose on a second hand at 150+ euro.

I’m from Ireland and there’s a few places you can get AC that is affordable - screwfix, Currys & most electrical stores have some available if you ask. You have to hunt for them off season though for them to be available online. We got one from Nisbets.ie. The one we got hasn’t been available for a while but with colder months it should be. Definitely good to have one as it’s better for peace of mind knowing nothing will happen to them.

most of the ones i’ve seen are the ones that spray out water or whatever, which i don’t feel is safe for my chinnies. all the proper ACS i’ve seen are like 600€+ , which unfortunately i cannot afford as i stated im a student with only a part time job on minimum wage 🫠 but if worse comes to worse i guess ill have to splurge for the sake of them.

We have one that cost around 350 so it’s not too expensive although you obviously have to save and we just placed ours into the window it’s quite easy to do with cardboard if you look it up on YT & water doesn’t come out of it as much as you think. We just have a place for the water to go but it’s not close enough to be near the chinchillas. There’s definitely options out there it’s just kind of something that needs a lot of research. Obviously don’t make yourself broke doing it but could be something to look into for next year. I do recommend. We have had it for months now & no issues. It also heats a room if you need it for that so it’s basically a year round investment. I dunno what your set up is like but you’ll need a window to expel the hot air so maybe just think of the best way to place it. It’s a bonus for yourself too because whatever room the chinnies are in will be cool too

Hi! I’m “across the pond” in England where we also don’t have AC! A couple of years ago I bought this big Dyson tower fan for large rooms. It’s half fan and half ac. It’s full price £350 but I got it in the Black Friday sales so it might be worth waiting til then, now that it’s turning cooler. It’s been a godsend for our chinnies this summer!
I combine it with a couple of other things for maximum cooling! First of all I freeze a damp towel and put it over the top of the cage so the cool air goes downwards. Also putting the sand bath full of sand in the freezer and then in the cage. That’s been a big favourite particularly with my angora; it’s like us taking a cool shower! Finally I give them ice cubes in a ramekin to lick/chew on intermittently throughout the day.
