Head space
Are food grade marbles the best way to reduce headspace? Scares me to think of dropping them into a carboy...

You do not say which stage of the process you’re at, so results may vary. If you’re in the first phase with primary fermentation (I know it is a continuous process, but that’s what it’s called after all) you will be ok. If you have racked once, or more, (so well into secondary fermentation) your cider may not have sufficient sugars left to produce sufficient co2 for a protective blanket. This is where to want as little head space as possible. Best scenario is that you have a thin necked carbouy, and are able to fill all the way into the neck of it. Reduced amount of surface. This way even just a little bit of co2 will make a protective blanket. If it isn’t much difference to get there, you can merely add store bought (preservative free, mind) juice. If you need a lot I recommend you try using a smaller tank if you can. Failing that you can chance it with some extra juice for some added sugar in hope it will generate sufficient levels of co2 for protection, or just chance it. Film yeast may develop, but you can siphon the cider carefully later. Good luck!

Don’t overthink it. If your cider is actively fermenting or even after first racking, the headspace will fill with CO2. If you’re planning to age cider long-term and your carboy is half full then you should just rack to something smaller. Keep your airlocks full. A little film yeast on the surface isn’t always a bad sign.
I have plenty of half-full carboys that turn out great and other topped up carboys that are terrible for all sorts of reasons. The “safest” place for your cider will always been in the bottle as soon as you feel it’s ready.
