DIY Help Identify engine Help

Post image

Can you Help me identify If it is a 998 or 1275 engine? Seller says 1275, but a friend thanks 998.

I Had a Mini 20 years ago.... Not Sure about it

It has a 1275 top radiator mount, but that doesn't mean it is a 1275, if the engine number is still visible you can look that up the prefix will indicate the original capacity

Below the spark plug on the right there is a rusty piece of the engine that is where the engine numbers are normally stamped on a piece of soft aluminium and riveted there, from the looks of the rust. It’s not there anymore.

All the 1275's that are not the original Cooper S engines from the 60's will have a solid back where as the small bore engines will have two metal covers with a breather on one of them

I’d be fairly confident it’s a 1275 based on the crankcase breather and the thermostat position.

If someone has cut then and off a rare airbox then they’ve just lost a couple of hundred quid 😆

Has it got tappet chest covers? If not then it’s an A+ 1275.

Looks like a MG Metro donkey to me…¯_(ツ)_/¯

The main air box is metro. But metros never had an intake that ran back over the rocker cover.

Everything about the picture says 1275. The rusty steel plate above the alternator will confirm it, if it starts 12.

also worth checking the engine number pad itself if you can see it, not just the plate above the alternator
photos can be deceiving and sellers “remembering” wrong is pretty common with minis

Look down the back of the engine. If it had 2 plates to remove the cam followers, it’s a 998. If it’s solid cast, it’s a 1275
