How do you choose a colocation hosting provider?
A few months ago, I started looking into colocation hosting because our servers were getting expensive to manage. Every provider seemed to promise great uptime, security and support but it was hard to tell what mattered in the real world. Also, I have gone through rackbank ai datacenter and noticed how different providers enhance different strengths. For those who have already gone through the process, what was the biggest factor that helped you choose a colocation hosting provider? EDIT: Thanks for sharing, stories like these really highlight how important reliable power, redundancy and proper maintenance are.

solid link, that guide actually covers most of the stuff people forget to ask about like cross connects and SLAs
still worth double checking with real users of whatever DC you’re eyeing though, sales sites always look perfect on paper1

kernelqzor's checklist is right, and I'd bold the network part. The big one people miss is carrier neutrality. If the facility only has one or two providers on-net, you've got zero leverage on bandwidth and cross-connect fees stack up fast. a carrier-dense building lets you rebid transport later and actually use that "network blend" everyone wants. Power gets the attention, connectivity is what locks you in. (I source connectivity for a living at CommQuotes.)

It’s been a while.
I worked with one colo place that put an “uninterruptible” power supply with lead-acid batteries in every rack. That sucked. Uninterruptible my midnight ass.
Another offered two power strips on different circuits in every rack. That was perfect for dual-power-supply server gear. Cost a little more.
The most important choice is ease of access. Can you drive there with a load of equipment and tools in the trunk of your car?
Pay attention to connectivity. Do they have their own AS and boundary routers, and connect to multiple backbones?
