Draft
1st and 2nd rounder boys what position we taking?
Now I know with such an early pick everyone is gonna say grab the best midfielder but we have daicos allan and most likely neale,with degoey beau and hopefully swads and anderson getting midfield minutes next year, I think we don’t even pick a midfielder at all (outside of replacing sully with a 4th rounder) Eli kravic our nga in 2027 is the one
For me personally even if we sign hogan or stringer we need to draft a key forward for the future outside of west we don’t have a young key forward and Buller I don’t think will make it,
the other option is drafting a key defender, we’re not linked to any free agent key defender so I think this is most likely gonna happen, with moore’s body and Howe gonna retire after next year and puncher howes not setting the world on fire I can see them drafting a key defender in the 1st or 2nd
And last but no least we need a pacey scoreboard hitting small forward, we all know about Bobby, jamie is gonna miss half the season, beau is a more half forward wing with his pace, Schultz needs a partner inside 50, our small forwards combined for 0 goals against bulldogs on the weekend, which makes me think why have we not had a conversation with zac Bailey or arty jones? saxena hayes and add in another small forward for and it becomes a competition for that spot, who wants it boys fight it out and win the spot

Yes. We don’t have a lot of A grade young talent so we just need to grab whoever is best.

Saxena will play the small forward role and we have Hayes who is developing nicely. Think we go key forward or back.

Saxena defiently has upside but he’s not there yet needs to work on consistency and tackling and hayes is young and developing but not a shoe in for round 1 2027 adding another small forward for competition won’t hurt.

Add competition sure but with a pick that high it's not high on my list of priorities. I've been very impressed with Hayes so far. The kid can kick a goal.

Hear me out, as you say our midfield future is kinda fine for the first time in a hot minute, our backline is good (but we'll need a Maynard replacement at some point) and re: key forward prospects we do also have McCarthy and I imagine we now keep Pods since were already likely cutting a lot of list spots before him. Our biggest list hole (outside of second mid which Neale/Allan will fill) is by far a goal sneaking Small Forward. We lost Hill, we've unfortunately likely seen the best of Elliot, McCreery is a mid, and Shultz though good isn't exactly a goal sneak. You kinda need three, so even if you include Hayes and Saxena, you'd still want a third. If you draft a small with your first pick they will likely need less development and could potentially play immediately, something that wouldnt be the case with a tall.
TL;DR for a sugar hit to fill list holes, taking a small fwd at 1st and a tall at 2nd may be good

If we want a goal sneaking forward, we should put our hat in the ring for Arty Jones. I'm very surprised we haven't tried going for him yet.

It obviously comes down to who is available, and I don't know anything about these prospects, but IMO a PF is more pressing than a SF.
An elite PF can take care of himself. An elite SF would be muted unless we can reliably draw attention in a pack and/or bring the ball to ground, which are two things we often struggle with.
We need both, and you're right you need multiple dynamic SFs, but I think the PF should ideally come first.

Draft another young, hopefully potential A-Grade midfielder, and use the rest of our picks for KPD and possibly a KPF.

I think Gayfer is the fit here
Nearly 200cm FF and the obvious family connection.
He would be a slight reach. Projected around 10-15 however ticks a lot of boxes.
West doesnt look like setting the world on fire…

If he's not rated as high as our pick, we could always trade the pick out and move down the draft for a future. Turn pick 9 into 12 and a future first or something. Bit of a gamble, but that's the draft.

I imagine there was a conversation re Zac Bailey and it was quite a short one. Every clubs would be asking about every out of contract player they think could add.
In terms of who you go for, it's usually pretty simple and remains so. Best talent. There's not a single position I would say was covered by existing talent, and lots of emerging holes.
I'd be wary of going after Hogan or Stringer. With McStay and Membrey already there, that's an achingly old forward line and it's hard to develop the next group if those opportunities are kept from them. Personally, I don't think Collingwood are close enough to really reload with some older guys and go again. Not unless you pull some major surprise like grabbing Butters.
Would think someone like Calsher Dear might be a better option.

That's how you end up drafting Harry De Mattia over Logan Morris.
Sometimes you need to prioritise taking the premium positions earlier.

De Mattia wasn’t even best available mid when we took him - he was a reach even then.
Plus pick 9/10 (prob actually 12/13) is a bit different from pick 30 or whatever HDM was. Another example of latter day Hine trying to be a bit too clever.
And finally, of course it always depends on what is there when we get to pick - if we are balanced in our view of how we judge mids vs talls and best available is a tall, then we take him.
There’s a bit of 20/20 hindsight being applied now as well re Morris. Pretty much every team passed up at least one chance to draft him, many for players that weren’t that great. I don’t recall Morris being considered a big slider who we were all shocked to have skipped at the time. Another 5 teams passed on him after we picked. We’ve drafted lots of talls around that mark who didn’t pan out - Sam McLarty (30), Will Kelly (29), Liam McMahon (31) to name a few. In that time there have been a few guys picked in the 2nd round out later who have come on as KPFs. That’s the nature of the draft.

They literally showed our whiteboard in the draft room, and he was on our list to pick with our next pick, but got taken before we got another pick.
Prioritising the more valuable position (key forward) would literally have resulted in them drafting him. It's not hindsight, that's fact.

The good news is there should be a bit to pick from. Harris and Snell as key defenders, Gayfer as a key fwd, and mids such as Steed and Edwards.

I’m not sold on Ed Allan. He was woeful in the Wild Card final and I question his decision making under pressure - which is basically the key attribute for a quality midfielder. There could be upside but I don’t think his performances to date justify the hype. Based on the modest two year deal the club has offered him it seems they are also hesitant about his upside.
If there’s an opportunity to trade him to improve our position then I think the club should take it.

Allan, at least as I see it, has done his best work in a role similar to what Josh Dunkley plays, and has done a great job in most of the games since the Sydney one where he kept a lid on Heeney for more than two and a half quarters.
When you’re playing that role against a team that has Bontempelli and Richards on the absolute tear (Richards had the highest rated game of and Bulldog EVER the week before) you’re likely going to look a bit shaky, especially when we are just playing through the hole in the midfield that we are pursuing Neale to fill (and threw our hat into the ring for Butters for.)
I think trading him would be an all time huge mistake. Tall, fast, run-all-day mids don’t grow on trees and he’s just getting to the point where he’s starting to look as though he backs himself.

Think we gotta back in reef, Howes and puncher to be long term key backs for us. With pick 9, just take the best midfielder as we desperately need support for nick long term. Its our highest pick since Stephenson, and o'bree had a great draft haul last year with swads and anderson.
