/uj there's a System of a Down song literally called Violent Pornography, for anyone unaware

33

u/riceandbeanburrito 8h ago

It's against the porn industry, isn't it?

84

u/ContributionDefiant8 8h ago edited 5h ago

It's not just about porn. It's about many things related (violence, shock value, exploitation) being used for entertainment to the general population.

It's a commentary on how humanity has become desensitized by these things. We consume content like this and act it's not any big deal.

Even if you don't count, this song just talks about the majority.

Edit: might I add, one of my favorite TOOL songs talks about living out these desensitized experiences in a vicarious manner.

It's the same theme of apathy and desensitization and all, but focused on a different aspect: how you live through experiences from a screen. We just see those violent things and stuff on the TV; that disconnection is enough to make people romanticize these otherwise horrible ideas... blurring fiction from reality. Living vicariously.

Right, been a while since I've listened to it. Also Vicarious is an amazing song and I was lucky enough to hear it live.

It's about how it seems today that all you see is violence in movies and sex on tv.

No, seriously, listen to it, that's what it's about

Knowing them, it is probably anti war

u/GDMolin 8h ago

Maybe it’s just me but I swear every System of a Down song just sounds like this.

Well when your band's ideology is punk and liberal, with half your band members now being MAGA or grifters, it's kinda hard to make a new album

12

u/MiniatureOuroboros 5h ago

Actually saw the drummer perform in an Idles shirt (a band with a rather different political outlook from MAGA) and was confused. He then told press that a certain genocide in Palestine made him reconsider his stance on the US and Trump.

Other than him, I don't think there's MAGA people in the band. But I might be wrong.

20

u/mynameistoocommonman 5h ago

Daron Malakian isn't MAGA but said something idiotic like that he's annoyed people view SOAD as a political band. Your basic enlightened centrist take.

Which is fucking dumb because he wrote some of their most overtly political songs.

"All research and successful drug policy shows that treatment should be increased / And law enforcement decreased while abolishing mandatory minimum sentences" is a totally apolitical line that has no leaning towards any policy trust me

14

u/Full-Ear87 6h ago

I sadly found out half of them were MAGA only after going to one of their recent shows. Should’ve never spent that money :(

15

u/1To3For5_ 5h ago

Half of them? I thought only the drums guy is MAGA, at least publicly

u/Full-Ear87 4h ago

Pretty sure the bassist is sympathetic to the cult

u/Larry_Sherbert99 0m ago

SoaD is not liberal, they are far more progressive than that lol
